I don't know how things go NOW, but I can say that at least 10 years ago "hentai" was a solid seller. If nothing else, I can say that the video store I helped at rented ADV hentai more often than ANY other anime and had several of them taken also.

I think another thing about hentai OVAs in the old days was that they were quite often (but not always) one-shot or two-shots, which meant they could sell a VHS tape with only around half-an-hour to 45 minutes of animation for full price and I believe the licensing fees were usually rather low compared to some of the more high profile anime TV series like Ranma 1/2 or Evangelion, so hentai titles were quite easy to turn a profit from.

Wow that's crazy, the work force takes all kinds. My old job had something along the lines of high school and HR being the principal office. But for a co-worker to make up fake shit and lie to fire you, that's a horrible thing to do.

Some people pay for that, too. Don't judge.

I always thought that one of the main reasons the North American hentai industry fell apart was due to fears of reverse importation on behalf of the Japanese. In Japan, while uncensored materials did exist, the studios legally couldn't sell them without covering the "naughty bits" up with mosaic, as it's against the law over there to show genitals. However, they were free to license the uncensored versions to the US, who could release the shows with all the "good parts" in full view.

This resulted in many Japanese fans reverse importing the uncensored DVDs from America so they could have mosaic-free hentai. Which, again, in the country of Japan, is illegal. So I think that might have had something to do with licensors cracking down and gradually becoming more and more stingy with their licenses, until it eventually pretty much dried up completely.

As regards the "free hentai" people who just download the shows off the internet, the ironic thing is that they'd actually be better off paying for the actual DVDs, because then they'd get to see the good stuff. Razz

Well, it depends on the individual. Would the viewer consider the price of the home video equal to or less than what he (or she, perhaps) values de-censoring the hentai? If so, then they can pay for the tape. If they don't want to pay for it and think they can live with the censored mosaic'ed stuff, then they'll choose to obtain it through piracy.

Hate to burst bubbles, but... most of those Internet downloads were actually rips of the uncensored non-Japanese DVDs, so that "free = censored, paid = uncensored" tradeoff never existed.

In fact, hentai is/was the only category of anime where downloaders universally preferred rips of domestic releases over fansubbed material. Heck, fansubbers barely even bothered subbing Japanese releases of new hentai until the late 00s or so (when overseas hentai licensing slowed down dramatically), because they knew no one would want to download censored video as soon as the once-inevitable R1 DVDs and rips thereof became available.

actually some of it did. though most of those series was on their anime 18 label. one of them was that creepy ova urosujiki(correct me if i'm wrong) that was created by that artist designer who is considered by the otaku community as the "god/founder of tentacle hentai"

the popular non hentai titles were of course utena and project ako and Iria:zeram the animation. though the problem with CPM was that not they depend too much on their hentai , it was that one of their problems was that they depend too much of their US Manga Corp department. not to mention that the other and the most damning to CPM was that though those three were popular they definitely were no DBZ and without a series like that on their shelves, they eventually went six feet under, which ended up starting the floodgates of other companies going under.

The only porn I actually buy are doujinshi, which is more to collect them since most of them are freely available online. There are quite a few that never get scanned that I have acquired, though. Generally it's only my favorite series or an artist/circle I like.

@samuelp That's actually pretty funny. Is Toei run by a bunch of old geezers that think the internet is a literal series of tubes as well?

I think the idea of fans being seen as bad employees because they might value their "nerd cred" over a real job is not only understandable, but interesting to reflect on as "fandom" becomes more of a cultural force. You have more and more of this happening in other industries, like big fanfiction writers becoming published authors of original fiction and taking the weird attitudes they developed in the fanfic community with them. It's likely always been an issue in insular businesses like anime, but it'll be interesting to see if this becomes more of a problem in the entertainment media at large.

Of course, it's a piece of the broader pattern that more and more people are doing their work and play in the same places, and have to watch what they do with the latter so they don't ruin the former. You don't have to be in a "fandom" to worry about how your online social behavior might impact your working life, especially if you also work online.

Speaking as someone who hires fans constantly, it all boils down to work ethic and that's unique to each person, regardless of fan enthusiasm. If you know everything there is to know about anime but can't hit deadlines and are bad at your job it doesn't matter, and superfans are not intrinsically better employees or harder workers than folks who aren't.

I'll take a hard worker who's willing to learn what he needs to know about anime over a superfan who doesn't do his or her job right any day of the week. One of those is an easy problem to fix, the other one is very difficult to overcome barring a radical change in the person's attitude toward work.

^^^ Agreed 100%. I have trouble explaining this to people sometimes. It's not that being a fan isn't an asset, it's just much more important that you do the work properly.

You know, you can always send these questions into Answerman. And jr0904, you're quite far off in both your assessment of our hits and what our problems were...
