It's the least they could do after cheating him out of a much-deserved Academy Award. Not that it'll ever change history.

Big Hero 6 is better than Kaguya? Please.

Not that surprising. An industry friend told me that the only way you can vote for Oscar nominees & winners is to have been nominated yourself in the past. Though if Takahata plans to mail his annual votes from Japan I suppose that would be of interest.

The problem is that there are a lot of old dinosaurs among the voters who have outdated tastes and are more inclined to vote for films they grew up around or say F*ck it and let their kids or grand-kids decide for categories they're clueless about. Reason why a lot of animation gets little to no respect despite the fact that a good majority of Generation X and Millennials grew up watching cartoons/anime, playing video games and therefore have a wider range of tastes and interests yet until people of that age range (who work in the industry) manage to join as a voting member (get nominated for something), Oscar winning patterns aren't really going to drastically change any time soon.

One argument is that there should be a limit to how long a member can be eligible to vote. If they haven't been nominated for anything in several decades they shouldn't be a member anymore.

Oh God, if you put an elderly Japanese man as the picture of the article and the word "Ghibli" is there, prepare for some innocent soul scrolling down the website to have a heart attack.

Peter: How many times do I go through this? They didn't cheat him. Kaguya's not a film would they nominate in the first place. And if it didn't get the nomination, Takahata wouldn't be represented at the Oscars at all.

Anyway, even retired, Miyazaki's still busier than him. So I can see Takahata going along with the invite.

I didn't know he worked on (a single) anime project. The more you know...

Great, the Academy now has a token Asian (or several). It's still an old white boys' club any way you cut it.
