That is the major flaw within this series every time a new arc starts..all or most of the side characters that had a role in that arc drop out after the other and we are introduced to another batch with kirito being the only one consistently involved in each new arc,

I really hope this movie will make the others shine out a bit more.

That's Light Novel Volume 8: A bunch of side stories. Most of them have already been adapted in the anime and there's no reason to adapt the one that wasn't.

Also, the movie is confirmed to be an original story by Kawahara (it says in the article).

I imagine it will place us back in ALO and Aincrad, though I kind of want this original story to involve putting most characters in GGO. He never gave us their GGO outfits.

There is another LN about GGO. You can read it if you want to learn more about GGO. kirito and Shion quit that game already.

YenON hasn't picked up it up yet. It's called Sword Art Online Alternative; Gun Gale Online.
There's a fan-translation project, that isn't too hard to find online.
