Yeah, do you know about it? The protest was against the existence of Sonic 4, so they announced a boycott and bought Sonic 1 in large quantities.

SEGA, which won either way, had nothing to say.

First I've heard of it. Thanks for the info.

Heheheheh, if this continues and enough schools and parents complain, Ellen Baker would find herself out of a job. Laughing

(That is, the publisher would just stop using her, and thus she's no longer that appealing to reference.)

If parental complaints about internet content go far enough, the school systems will simply get rid of the text books. Even though the illustrator and publisher have done nothing wrong.

I completely disagree. While the artist is completely in the right to ask fans to restrain themselves, he shouldn't have to or need to. It is the parent's responsibility to prevent their children from viewing these sorts of pictures in the first place. Just because some people can (and will) sexualize something, doesn't make the original any more inappropriate or worthy of sanction. By this fallacious logic, any kid's programming is unsuitable for kids because of the pornographic fan art. I see this as a relinquishing of parental responsibility.

She's trending even more than the earthquake, so if that doesn't say anything about her popularity, I don't know what does.

I don't think this should come as much of a surprise to the publisher. The joke that students suddenly want to learn and go to class because of the pretty teacher has been around for a long time. If anything, the statement on the character's creation suggests this was at least part of the motivation behind her design.

Based solely on what I read in the article it seems to me that they simply made a statement phrased as a polite request to the fan artists, and they did it to show the people who buy and use their textbooks that they are not ignoring the fan art and are not implicitly approving it.

I see nothing tyrannical or unreasonable about it.
I doubt that they expect to stop the drawings, and would not be surprised if they appreciate the potential for publicity, but they had to show their awareness of the situation.

I made a fanart of Ellen with some girls. I hope I do not get sued for this. Cool

I interpreted it the same way. They're just covering themselves legally and for PR, this ensures nobody can claim they stood by and endorsed the sexualization of a teacher of whatever complaint the helicopter parent comes up with. I really do not think they actually intend for thousands of fan artists to fill out tens of thousands of permission slips that they then have to sort through.

[quote="GeneStriker"]The legal head is basically saying, "We had to say something, so we did. We don't actually care. It happens all the time, after all."
This is pretty much what the writer of the original article concluded.

There is a precedence set with the e-surance mascot that required them to stop using her because any search of their name brought up porn.
