I haven't read it either but the ANN review's synopsis of volumes 1 and 2 reads:
That's not slice of life. It's drama. |

The genre is "slice of life", not "real life" or "life story". That "slice" part the the defining element of the genre; you should get the impression you have jumped at random in the middle of an ongoing story and jump out again before the story reaches it's conclusion. That's why it's just a slice, not a story. |

Arguing with posters one by one is pointless. The audits give power to the majority and the majority of people auditing views slice of life as this bizarre logic of "it could happen in real life". The results of the current genre search are pretty much a joke to me. I only use the production year part of that search. Looking back at the NEW GENRES thread, it seems too much time was spent with the definitions. In theory, everything is fine. In practice, it doesn't work. The problem is that most of the people auditing don't use those definitions. Even if they are explicitly displayed on top of the genre selection. The majority goes by their own interpretation of the genres/themes.
The questions that should be asked are: Is there a way to alter the audits so that Dan42's definitions become the norm? Should the audits be altered even though they are probably serving the majority's needs? |

I'll agree but there should be a new Genre for Manga/Anime that doesn't quite fit Drama or SoL. I would agree that Sand Chronicles is more of a Real Life manga so we should add a Real Life option when choosing a Genre! Real Life would be manga/anime whos events could and probably have happened in real life. So no sci-fi, fantesy, or anything else that is improbable or impossible to happen in reality! |

I just did a little rewrite of the drama & slice of life definitions. Previously drama ended with "Highly emotional themes, interpersonal conflicts and tension are the norm" and slice of life ended with "the kind of ordinary, every-day life that anyone could have within that setting."
That might have misled some people into thinking that slice of life was characterized by realism and drama characterized by melodrama. I've changed the definitions to make it clearer that drama doesn't have to be that highly emotional, and I tried to emphasize that slice of life is about commonplace stories rather than realistic "it could happen" stories. I'm also thinking about adding melodrama, so that we'd have a continuum of dramatic-ness: slice of life -> drama -> melodrama. Thought? |

Yeah i think that might work a bit better. I was getting confused by that as well which is why i thought Sand Chronicles was Slice of Life. I still think there should be a Real Life catergory or even just a sub-genre underneath drama for it. |

Dan42, just like in this thread, you have too much faith in the auditors. The majority of people, not even restricting to ANN contributors, doesn't read instructions.

A question: Does Blue Gender (TV) qualify as a drama? I can see it as a war drama. With its ending, it is not a slice-of-life.

It has drama, but I wouldn't say that it is drama.

Another question: How to categorize Memories (movie)? It's a 3-part anthology; with one part ("Stink Bomb") being a slice-of-life while another ("Magnetic Rose") is more of a drama.

Personal opinion, but given that it's 3 shorter titles released as a set, I'd say that it probably should be split into an omnibus (was the same done for Animatrix or the Batman one? Don't remember). Each one gets its own entry with its own staff and cast and genre/themes, and the omnibus has the overall info.

Then exactly why is there an audit being conducted for the Memories (movie) encyclopedia page? |
