If I might change the topic, I wonder what is on your list of Forthcoming manga to buy.. Horseradish mentioned the soon to be released Osamu Tezuka Story.

Besides the next volume of whatever series you are following, what's forthcoming new NEW, that you will likely buy as soon as it is released?

Almost a year away, I am looking forward to;
Ichi-F: A Worker's Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant by Kazuto Tatsuta
I'm a big fan of true stories in manga, and I am still quite shocked by the disaster up north. Ichi-F sound like an attempt to give a real inside story.
I am also (obviously) quite interested in Fukushima Devil Fish: Anti-Nuclear Manga by Katsumata Susumu... but I am not sure what kind of work it is going to be

Beyond that, I am excited about Wandering Island by Kenji Tsuruta.
Love the premise (and the cat).

How about you all?

LS

I managed to buy a copy of Tales of Shigeru Mizuki though Yahoo! Auctions Japan. The picture I posted was from a current listing, so thank you for telling me about the book!

Didn't know about Tokion and the 2000 L'Association Comix, which is impressive at almost six pounds and roughly 2000 pages. Based on the Wikipedia article, I wouldn't have thought that Tokion had comics within its pages. The magazine seems strange in general. There was an experimental short called Cat Soup based on Nekojiru's work with Tatsuo Sato as director and Masaaki Yuasa working on storyboards and animation production. I haven't read the comics, but the show Nekojiru Gekijō is probably more faithful. Here are two informative and sad articles about Nekojiru.

Ichi-F: A Worker's Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant will be released on March 7, 2017 and Fukushima Devil Fish seems to be already out of print? It was released about half a month ago on June 16th, but Amazon only has marketplace listings and I do not see the title in the Breakdown Press store. A Distant Neighborhood by Jiro Taniguchi is being re-released in a large hardcover omnibus. It would be very nice if Ponet Mon re-released A Zoo in Winter as well, since it has been out-of-print for some time.

I saw the anime adaptation for Spirit of Wonder: Miss China's Ring, which was just OK. I do like his art style, so I will read Wandering Island sometime.

First, kudos in finding The Tales of MS. What a joyous coincidence. I was embarrassed to say it before but I recall when I first found the book... and carried it to the counter. My hand was trembling as I bought it.. hahah~ I'm such a bibliophile. I just can not get into digital books. I read 2 non fiction books on my pdf reader when I could not find them elsewhere... or actually I could not find them fast enough for my interest. But I LoVe books.. lol

I recoiled afterwards at my own enigmatic description of TOKION, but then having read your own link I see I was rather spot on. As far as I know it was only about the first 10 issues with manga but I'll check and post later. After they stopped putting in manga I lost interest.
Now that I see the article and one of the names associated with TOKION is Adam Glickman, And I recall too that was the force behind Fantagraphics slim Sake Jock. IIRC it came before the other manga.alt anthologies that have become our roadmaps.

And not coincidentally at all, Nekojiru appears in both. I think I once counted 5 Nekojiru English appearances. My desire for order wanted to put them all together in one place. sigh~. I hope someday there is a fine collection. Again, your amazing link had me stunned and I had to stop reading for a while. I recall early when I heard of her death. From my first encounter I tasted genius - but maybe also pain and struggle... apparently. I sincerely hope someone can resurrect her works and present to an English audience. F'in' awesome.

A week ago I ordered A Distant Neighbourhood from the Potent website,.. actually I was surprised to find Blue by Kiriko Nananan was still available there. Ordered both, and should arrive any day.

And lest I leave you with nothing new to chew on, I'm sure you will love the story Japan’s Junglest Day by Michio Hisauchi. It appeared in a Japanese fiction anthology called Monkey Brain Sushi. Old but still available. If you don't mind your manga sandwiched between non- picture stories it is a great one. Though you mentioned (didn't you?) a dis-taste for post WWII war-themed stories... Tell me about that... if you geta chance

I don't believe Fukushima Devil Fish is actually gone out of stock. I think it has not been released yet, Amazon's robotic mechanism seems to intuit that not having equals sold out. After all the Breakdown Press website shows all their publications even those gone. Fukushima Devil Fish is not yet listed.

Yeah, I'd certainly have an adrenaline rush and think "There it is! No way! Better grab it now before someone else notices within the next ten seconds!!!" Laughing

Wow that cover design for Sake Jock is something. I wonder if UK publishers were also tentatively scattering their own magazines and anthologies during the '80-'90s. No one in this thread seems to have mentioned similar developments taking place. It would be pretty interesting to learn more. There really is manga in all sorts of strange publications. Monkey Brain Sushi: New Tastes in Japanese Fiction seems like a typical literary anthology without pictures. Thanks for taking the time to list the comics in Tokion!

I am rather surprised that copies can still be ordered through Ponent Mon's website. The site looked outdated and there's not much current news posted on the English side. I guess they've been neglecting to update their store.

Hmm, the Amazon listing has updated the release date for Fukushima Devil Fish to July 28, 2016. It was odd that they had out-of-print titles still listed on the Breakdown Press website, but Fukushima Devil Fish was not there.

Ponent Mon is an odd little publisher... But relative to size they have had lots of awards. They seem to have an exclusive line on Jiro Taniguchi - which is amazing. And though their back catalog is not very large; there is no way around saying that Blue, Disappearance Diary and Doing Time are not works of genius.

Yeah! The big surprise is that they still have Blue. (Though I don't know how many copies.) Going for a mint now on Amazon.

I had always assumed that the UK did not have any additional manga that was not already available in English in the US. (Perhaps the reverse is not true.)
But knowing the odd and end bits that I have seen in Japan, it should be no surprise if there were UK translated manga artifacts, not available elsewhere.

If any sleeping logs got the skinny, would love to hear about it

As far as I am aware, there have never been any UK based manga publishers, certainly nothing the size of Viz/Tokyopop. All we get are US imports. There /may/ be a couple of indie comics publishers which /might/ have released one or two very niche volumes each but I'm not 100% sure.

Though it was my own question, one title suddenly comes to mind;

Kung Fu Boy or Iron Fist Chinmi by Takeshi Maekawa was published by Bloomsbury UK in English but never published in US afaik. There must have been 12 or so small paperback books.

I just learned about a 2013 English edition of Yoshihiro Tatsumi called; Midnight Fishermen: Gekiga of the 1970's, published in Singapore.

Anybody got their hands on it, especially that can compare with D&Q editions?

(And if you bought it, where did you get it?)

thanks, LS

There is an article from The Japan Times about the title, which notes that the nine short stories received exclusive English publication through Landmark Books. As far as I know, D&Q have yet to publish any of the nine short stories in their releases. The stories in no particular order are The Lantern Angler, Midnight Fishermen, Run with the Midnight Train, Welcome Home Daddy, The Dawn of Porn, Misappropriation, Hometown, My Boobs, and The Woman’s Palace. According to Amazon UK, it will have a 2016 release on September 28.

I found articles that mention it was first released in 2013, but looking up the ISBN number returns the 2016 edition? One article mentions that it was available through the Singapore Kinokuniya online store back in 2013...The writer notes that "the translation is occasionally wobbly" and "the title has been misprinted on the flyleaf", so the 2016 edition may be revised to address these former potential issues.

It is a curious project. Looking forward to any more gekiga in general and more Tatsumi in particular.

These last few years seem to have brought us to a wonderful tipping point where the bookshelves now are packed with delicious alternative manga, like never before: amazing amounts of Tezuka, and other classic manga, manga biographies, gekiga, alternative works, and edgy mainstream manga.

I tend to forget about DMP unless ANN reports a new Kickstarter campaign, because they seem to keep a low profile otherwise and have cut off major retailers for recent releases. Besides supporting the Kickstarter campaigns, there are some Tezuka works available that are exclusive to their Akadot online store: Storm Fairy, Crime and Punishment, Clockwork Apple, Brave Dan, Alabaster, and Unico (2nd Edition).

There has been a good deal of alternative manga and other works that would lack American mainstream reception! Some do chart on the New York Times Bestseller List, which hopefully encourages releases. Very exciting so far.

I caught up with all my Tezuka titles through the DMP website. I kicked in on the previous failed Tezuka kickstarter... since then it seems to have been a while. However, there is no downplaying the amazing line of Tezuka they have put out so far. Hopefully they will continue after a little more break.

It has seemed like DMP has gone low profile - - I notice they haven't answered messages on their Facebook in a long time or kept it updated. Could be a staffing issue. I am not interested in most of their other recent BL etc. titles, but i notice on my shelves a lot of older DMP stuff that I have been delighted to have read... and others I am searching for/

With D&Q going ALL Mizuki Shigeru for the foreseeable future, I'd be most pleased if another publisher (like the few that have dipped their toes in - Breakdown Press, Top Shelf, Last Gasp) will go all out for a steady stream of classic manga and gekiga.
