With the revelation of the Onihei anime adaption, it was announced that a newly founded studio called "Studio M2" would be helming the animation work. The work is produced by Masao Maruyama, so the first question we must ask ourselves is: Why isn't MAPPA doing Onihei?

So I've researched a bit. I couldn't find any official information on Studio G2 yet (they don't even have a website at the moment), but it was obviously founded by Maruyama himself (as the Onihei news states).

I then stumbled upon a post of 4chan (so I'll take it with a grain of salt) stating the following:

Quote:
Maruyama Masao, founder of Madhouse and MAPPA, is creating a new studio, called M2.
According to someone who attended Maruyama's panel at Animazement this year, he says his health is degenerating, and expects he has 3-5 years left to live. Therefore this new studio is to be dedicated to making the projects of his dreams. This is corroborated by this interview

where he says there are some projects he wants to make sure will happen, even if he won't be able to see them to completion.

In this, he's credited as CEO (取締役社長) of Studio M2, pretty much confirming this.
However, he remains as president (会長) of MAPPA, indicating he's still helming the studio.

Can anyone confirm that he actually said something like this? If so, I would be extremely sad to hear it. Considering his age, it was obvious that he wouldn't be able to continue for another 50 years, but up until now he appeared to be healthy.

Another thing I'm wondering about is whether he will be able to find the people and financial resources to finish Yume Miru Kikai (which was half complete at the time of Kon's passing). He stated at least twice after Kon's death that he couldn't retire before completing Yume Miru Kikai, but as far as I remember the lack of a director who could replace Kon as well as money were issues.

In any case, I really, really hope he is still healthy and doing well.

For those who don't know Masao Maruyama: He has been an anime producer for 50 years, and has been one of the most influential figures (and still is!) in the industry for many decades. He has nurtured many talents, including late Satoshi Kon, and was one of Madhouse's co-founders as well as the founder of MAPPA. Countless ambitious anime works, many of them not mainstream enough to be profitable, including Redline and In This Corner of The World, wouldn't exist today without him.[/quote]

I know this is a late as hell response and I apologize for that. But I can confirm that Maruyama did indeed say that, because he said it to me during the Q&A session. I asked him if/when the anime adaption he wanted to do of Naoki Urasawa's Pluto could happen. He said "Before I die." and then started talking about his projected life span, and some other things he'd like to finish in that time.
