oh, I kind of stopped reading the refview, becaue just as the series felt rushed the review felt the same way, so let's blame the "source material", not the reviewer. I always felt that charlotte(and little busters), were better suited to be 2 coeur/20+ episodes anime series and that by being constraited to half of those episodes they fail to deliver the feeling, so I am glad to see that the review pretyt much confirms my feelings.

I don't agree at all; I thought the second half was the better one. Maeda has always been about conveying emotion and not cohesive narration and this is no exception. I'd recommend this to everyone who is a fan of his other works. Personally, Charlotte is my second favorite.

Okay but let's be real here, spoiler[Ayumi dying and Yu going into despair was the second-best part of the anime, only beaten out by Yu cackling madly as he fried a conference room with Sith lightning.]

The second definitely suffered a massive drop when spoiler[Ayumi was revived and everything was perfect again though,] thus ruining Yu's development and three of the best episodes of the show.

I enjoyed Charlotte quite a bit, even despite that major misstep.

I agree with the people who say that Charlotte is not a bad anime. The second half definitely feels rushed (probably because of the 2-3 dumb episodes in the first half), but I think the ending had enough closure.

But Charlotte is an original anime.

But it didn't "ruin Yuu's development" at all?

He changed so much. He became a very selfless character; making lots of sacrifices at the end to make the world a safer place for all the teenagers around the world so they could live happy and normal lives.

Bringing spoiler[Ayumi] back didn't change his attitude about what he should do. It didn't change him thinking about how he wanted to stop the suffering.

Though I would have preferred they hadn't brought her back, yeah.

I watched Charlotte after having re-watched all of Jun Maeda's previous Anime adaptations of his Visual Novels and Angel Beats from that experience I learned the only Anime I still liked was the Air movie and found that Maeda's writing just did not have the same effect on me it did years ago.

Charlotte only confirmed for me that I am no longer the target audience for Maeda's writing as frankly I find it emotionally manipulative and to me it's emotional pornography.

I assume you meant Angel beats? Little busters has 26 episodes, 13 episodes in refrain and 8 specials. If you meant Angel Beats i agree that 2 cours would have been amazing. However despite being 13 episodes and 2 OVA? I really like it.

I honestly loved Charlotte, am i weird for that? I do think a 2 cour wouldve been better. His journey on the end felt a little bit cramped.

..... while not the most negative review I have read here on ANN.. I'm having problems believing this was an objective review.

I agree with some of the points made here, but the 2nd half was definitely better then the first both in plot and in direction. The first half is slow.. and the 2nd half picks up pace quickly and then it's biggest flaw is cramming everything in for the final episode. As for the emotional roller coaster.. that's Key/Visual Arts period.

After reading this review it leaves me with the impression that this was the worst anime you've ever watched.. really? cause I can think of far worse.. *cough* a town where you live *cough*

It is; this is probably the exact reason why I like it so much. Then toss in the scenery porn and the musical porn and you've got one big ol' porn goldmine. Laughing

Yay! More forced drama porn from Mr. Maeda Rolling Eyes

(P.S. If you like this show and the rest of his work wonderful, I'm just not a fan )

I meant that the review feels complex and convoluted, but instead of blaming the reviewer i blame the charlotte anime.

I'd have a bigger problem to discover it could be one.

It's always been fascinating how often terms like objective, logical & biased show up in defence of works designed for a pure emotional response. I first noticed this for Air & similar reactions inevitably reappear every time criticism of an Ano Hana or Angel Beats is made.

I liked Charlotte. And I thought that Yuu's little sister was adorable. It's been a while since I saw it but the 2nd cour was great. Sure, I won't say it was perfect but most of its problems would have been solved if the anime had 20 episodes but there was one thing I believe is that Yuu acquiring all powers was never something to be shown in full, I would have enjoyed that though, but that would be another anime and not Charlotte. From the beginning to the end, it was about his evolution and his path to adulthood. And to be clear, I don't like drama for the sake of drama, the "emotional pornography".
Also, did the good episodes where Yu is in grief and is trying to cope with his loss somehow escape the reviewer? Because Nick only seems to remember the blind vocalist of the band.

I agree that reviews are inherently subjective because they are opinions, but I cannot avoid being annoyed when people (I am not saying you are) insist that it is impossible to use any kind of objective metric (i.e. visual quality, writing that makes some kind of sense) when critiquing anime or any kind of art.

For me Charlotte was already a mess to begin with. I liked the first episode but beyond that it felt like it was at odds with itself, the problem with maeda's writing is that he try really hard to give us the feels while not realizing that he does not treat his characters seriously or like real people. he wants us to relate to them but oftenly treat them like a cartoon and I mean "looney toons", this come all the way back from clannad to angel beats and is the same in charllote.

we are supposed to feel sorry for the white hair girl because her brother was tortured and whatnot, but how can I relate to a character that literally kicks her supposed friend through a third floor window for the lolz? make up your mind charlotte what show do you want to be, if you want to be treated seriously start by doing so yourself.

I remember in clannad how there was a running joke in which one of the girl literally crashed the protagonist's best friend with a bike then everyone just laugh it off.

I don't expect flawless characterization from every anime, but if they want me to relate to the characters at least give them a god dam value for health

And don't get me started with angel beats, that show is a prime example of style over substance, give us a shit ton of tragic backstories but the own character that suffered them apparently don't care about it or learnt anything of them, for they don't ever stop to think about outcomes before acting.

for me charlotte became a laughing stock when "random yandere middle schooler out of nowhere" entered the scene
