I'm surprised licensors still insist on PAL conversions. Even mainstream companies generally release ntsc dvds now. Im guessing it's just something to do with reverse importation.

That's really the only possible reason. We are in the same DVD region as Japan, but at least some Japanese equipment (e.g. the Playstation 3) will refuse to play PAL discs making it a bar to reverse importing.

This would make perfect sense if
a) anyone going through the trouble of importing wouldn't also be able to work around this easily.
b) these weren't all shows getting released on Region A BD in the US, which would be a much more obvious target for reverse importing.

Don't some/most Region A BDs force English subs when you chose Japanese audio to try and stop that?

They can do the same with Region 2 NTSC DVDs, instead we have this.
