Geez, is Yaoi really that popular or is there just a dedicated group who buys every single Yaoi manga released? It seems like more Yaoi gets licensed every day just about. (Still freaking jealous despite having more Yuri now in the market.)

Anyway, I guess congratulations are in order for Yaoi fans. Looks like ya'll hit the motherlode. Again.

Apparently the majority of US manga readers/buyers are made up of little emo/hardcore romance loving tweens than anything else, and for some reason, seeing two guys f*cking each other is appealing to them... go figure...

The only two that really interest me out of that list is the Nakajima version of the GH manga and "Fallen Moon", licensed by Blu, whose artwork looks fantastic. I might give the others a try some time if I like the art or dare I say "plot". Anime hyper Still waiting for the SP manga being released in a few scant weeks. Very Happy Also for the person above, try not to overgeneralize. It would make the world a better place...plus I know said emo tweens and don't like to be associated with them. Cool

I'm still wondering out of all the Boy's Love stuff no one has picked up Zetsuai and Bronze yet? Is there a reason, or is it just being ignored?

Maybe cause they are older titles? Hmm, don't know.

I was waiting for the Nakajima version of Gakuen Heaven as well. I am hoping Blu is working up to licensing all of Temari Matsumoto's stuff. Honestly I think Shinobu Kokoro was one of the weakest (plot-wise) and they seem to be building up to her better ones. I adore Hinako Takanaga's works (DramaQueen where's Koisuru Bokkun?), so anything of her's that gets to the US makes me happy.

Boysenberry made my day with another Nase Yamato title, Kuchibiru no Yukue. Considering the content of her manga I think those (Pet on Duty and this one) may be the safest for the US market.

I don't know any of the titles licensed by Deux. My only comment here is that it will make some people from LP and BE very happy with the plethora of Kano Miyamoto titles.

However one of the best ones on that list is Aoi Sora ga Aerba (It's okay if the Sky is Blue) by Yuko Kuwabara. Its a school setting and it maybe a bit soft for some hardcore yaoi fans but I happen to like my yaoi with some substance. <-- that bit is for the you know which two.

Despite the fact that I love Yen Press stuff (Spiral and Zombie-Loan) I have to say that I wouldn't touch any of the yaoi titles they have listed with a 90-ft pole. Anything by Lily Hoshino is, in my OPINION is pure drivel.

I am kind of happy that ANN posted something about Yaoi-Con. I always get the general feeling of anti-yaoi for the most part from the site. Oh well, I guess the "little emo/hardcore romance loving tweens" segment of us yaoi fans just makes the majority of us (quite normal rational people) a very good target.

I couldn't help myself . . .

P.S. I'm really not trying to start an argument, I swear, sorry.

Well, I agree with your statement. I've personally gotten several anti-yaoi vibes from this site.
The emo/hardcore romance loving tweens don't make up a majority of manga fans, but even if they did, why is it so bad for them to love 'two guys f*cking'? People have sex drives, and yaoi manga is one of the few forms of entertainment out there that appeals to womens' sexuality. Of course it's going to sell well.
I'm sure if these were all yuri licenses instead of yaoi, no one would be complaining and most of the posts here would be celebrating it. It's a double-standard that rather gets on my nerves.
I'm not trying to start an argument either, but I felt the urge to comment the statement above really got on my nerves.

I'll admit, I am one of those who is hardcore and dedicated to yaoi market, and I enjoy collecting yaoi titles. I buy almost everything released. This large list is exciting, but it also means more spending I'll be tempted to do. Razz

I was being slightly sarcastic in my statement, as noted by the "/sarcasm", as I know quite a few people (male and female) who enjoy yaoi and do not fit the generalized type I spoke of. Not to mention that the age group of 'tweens' does not generally have enough money to support this (growing) niche market, and are usually the ones seen sitting in the bookstore reading the manga... volume 9 of the manga... then putting it back on the shelf, with no plans to actually buy anything.
I just personally don't care for it, when even the most objective reviews possible I've seen on this site of yaoi series end up boiling down to, "just another veiled plotline in order to justify guys having sex", which is a practice I do not condone. Add to that, that most yuri titles have actual plotlines, with very little actual sex, and when released here, get an OT rating at best (Tetragrammoton Labyrinth aside, that should be M for the violence), when compared to the massive amount of yaoi that comes out for the sole purpose of seeing 'supposedly' hot guys getting it on with each other (beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder), with what usually feels like a thrown-together storyline to support the main goal of the genre. And then, when I see impressionable young girls, much too young to read this kind of material, and probably without parental consent, ripping the plastic wrap off of mature rated titles so they can read them in-store without having to pay for anything, it kind of irks me just a little. If you want your yaoi, fine, but keep it away from the young children who really should not be reading it.

And this is what really confuses me... Tweens should not be reading hardcore yaoi, anymore than a young boy should be reading Playboy. And how does two men having sex appeal to a woman's sexuality? Wouldn't a normal heterosexual relationship drawn in the exact same style as yaoi (supposedly uber-hawt guys) appeal more, and allow you to actually fantasize about the relationship? It just doesn't make any sense...

Yes I noted the sarcasm, yet somehow the comment still struck me.

But I agree, unless you are 18+ you shouldn't be reading yaoi. I don't condone these squealing 14 yo going all weepy over "two guys f*cking" however it is not my fault their parents don't police what they read. If something that has sex in it in is not in shrinkwrap I inform the store clerks. One of the clerks at another store I go to enjoys embarrassing these girls. Their parents go to buy the books for them and he points out the Parental Advisory and asks "Do you realize you are buying man sex for your daughter?"
Geez, why aren't romance or erotica books treated this way? The descriptions of sex in those are quite graphic, is it because there are no pictures?
teh*darkness wrote:

Apparently somewhere the definition of yaoi was missed. From ANN's lexicon:
Quote:
Unlike North American gay-porn, the target audience for yaoi is female.
The perception being that women imagine themselves (or replace themselves) as the characters in these stories.
teh*darkness wrote:

Besides Maya Shino stuff, I have yet to come across anything het that is as pornographic as yaoi, and ones that do usually involve some sort of "domineering" male. I find the majority of adult het manga is geared towards guys. Manga with het relationships for girls tends to be extremely fluffy (read shoujo) and in my OPINION quite sappy.

It's because of the lack of pictures. Despite the fact that books without much in the way of artwork have had profound and sometimes society altering effects (the Bible and the Koran spring to mind) people have this odd notion that pictures can brainwash people.

You can have pretty much anything in a text-only novel, but God save you from the masses if you dare to draw it. The whole thing seems like a terrible double-standard to me, but the chances of changing public perceptions that pictures make things more serious are slim.

Although I have to admit, I like that clerk you mentioned. "Do you realize you're buying man sex for your daughter?" Oh, that's going to have me giggling for a while. Some parents are real idiots.

A big old Parental Advisory notice and a rating is on something, they don't even bother to look beyond the title. "Little Tommy wanted me to pick up a copy of Metal Shiv 7 for his Gamestation and little Tammy wants Tales of Yaoi: Love Stories. I'll just pick them up without checking the ratings. I'm sure children wouldn't be interested in them if they weren't child friendly!" Parents need to check out the contents of what they're buying for their kids instead of just the contents.

Not that I personally think Yaoi will warp anyone's mind. It's not my thing, I prefer Yuri/Shoujo-ai. Two guys just don't interest me. I do worry though about some moron getting worked up when they FINALLY take the time to actually see what their kid reads. "I didn't bother to pay any attention when I bought this man sex for my 7-year-old! Now I demand the government punish everyone for my stupidity!"

Sorry for the mini-rant.

Same with yuri, but no one ever complains about that. Confused

The publishers mark and wrap all 18+ titles, and many don't even sell them in brick and mortar stores. Beyond that, it's the responsibility of the stores and the parents to keep it out of the hands of their kids.

Also, a large number of titles released in the US are not sexually graphic, and many don't include sex at all. These are considered appropriate for teens.

Why do men like watching two women in porn movies? Because two women are hot to them. It's that simple. (if sex made sense there wouldn't be internet sites devoted to (fill in the blank))

And you're forgetting a major component of BL, and that is that the "L" stands for love. Almost every title released in North America is a romance at heart, and the attraction for women and girls is seeing men fall in love, and with BL you get two for the price of one.

Concerning the list of new licenses, I'm really excited by Deux's titles. A nice variety, and some great romances and talent on the list.

I'd probably respond I'm buying it for me. Are you a homophobe that it bothers you so much?

Doesn't this come down to that argument we see all the time "If you slice off a woman's breast, it's ok, but if you kiss it, it's not?" Why the hell can one show a woman's naked chest in PG & totally nude in R, but I remember that one movie (Bruce Willis, wasn't it?) where they wanted to give it an X for showing a totally naked guy full frontal? Guy private parts are dirtier than gal private parts?

We don't expect you to want to see 2 guys. However if you prefer 2 girls together, why is it so hard to see why gals want to see 2 guys together?

How did we get down to a 7 yr old wanting yaoi? The Nymphet version? I don't think most normal 7 yr olds would want anything to do with yaoi as mushy romance kissing stuff. They might want some action title like Apocalypse Zero, but that's probably not really what a 7 yr old wants, either. How did we get to tweens even? Including the 12 yr olds? Maybe around 10 you MIGHT get a few takers, but really, interest in dating kicks in when the girls start reaching dating age themselves. I always thought it insane when co-workers worried their 12-yr-old wasn't interested in boys yet "Oh, no, is she gay?" My almost 17 yr old (All Saints Day) still thinks guys are stupid. There's a guy doing his best to be her boyfriend, & she's letting him say it, but she says she really just thinks of him as she thinks of her girlfriend. In fact, she seems to get way more emo about her best girlfriend she's had since 6th grade.

Most of the people over at Boys on Boys seem to be over 18. (Maybe one has to be over 18 to join, I forget).

Maybe there's a large yaoi market because there are several publishers devoted to it while yuri has fewer exclusive publishers. Maybe it's all the bitching I see when yuri titles get licensed. On the anime side, allthe guys seem to whine over probably no dub while the gals are ok getting our yaoi sub-only as long as we get it at all. Guys seem so much pickier over their stuff. Not to mention even in Japan only about 1/3 of the titles printed are aimed at gals.

I've said it before. Maybe it's not fair, but the manga licensors are eyeballing the female audience because we aren't bleed-off from domestic comics. A lot of the guys reading manga also seem to be fans of domestic stuff. Some aren't, but gals aren't supposed to read comic books--they buy make-up or clothes. Conventional wisdom for years meant the domestic comic book industry ignored us-we had to read stuff aimed at guys. Even those shonen titles hitting the top 100 tend to be the titles gals like-highly slashable. Manga publishers here see the demographics. Can they afford to compete with Viz which has a lock on a majority of the popular shonen titles? Or do they shift down, settle for selling half as many? Or maybe they try to get some of the dollars out of the gals' pockets.

The appeal? Have you READ the average shojo title? I usually want the female lead to die a quick, though qruesomely painful death somewhere around Vol 10, so it's a race to see if the author can end the title before I'm totally repulsed. The girl leads tend to be stupid. Yeah, Japan loves idiot heroes & that's fine for Luffy to be an idiot, but Miaka needed to be abandonded by the Suzaku Warriors in the name of self-preservation. It's too rare to get intelligent female leads. Ouran works because we see more of the guys. Hana Kimi works also because of the large support cast. Hot Gimmick was a race to see if the author could end it before I dropped it in disgust.
Yu Watase comments on this in the back of one of her books-that the Japanese want the dumb lead like Miaka, but the Americans seem to prefer the gal in Ceres.

Lily Hosino is an evil lie. She draws traditional shojo, then calls the girl the uke. I swear all they do is change the pronouns. Pretty-yes. A girl in disquise? Not in yaoi.

Okay, I think someone needs to take a moment and reread my posts, because clearly you haven't read them.

First, I have not expressed any problem with homosexuality in this thread. I don't care who or what someone wants to have sex with, so long as it's consenual. (It would be rather hypocritical to be a Yuri fan if I did have a problem with homosexuality.)

Second, I found the clerk's comments funny because I've seen a lot of parents who haven't got a damn clue what they are buying for their kids. They just think Mr. TV or Mr. Comic Book will keep their kids from bothering them.

CCSYueh wrote:

And I said nothing at all about censorship other than parents, if buying something for their kids, should actually take the time to see what the contents are. I've repeatedly, and at length, defended freedom of expression in regards to drawings. I did comment that people think pictures make things worse, but I did not say that I agreed with or even liked that position. I think it's quite clear if you read my post that I don't subscribe to such rubbish and that I think it's somewhat hypocritical considering what can be published in some novels.

Also, I'm on record in the loli debates as defending loli hentai. Trying to accuse me of favoring censorship is quite silly.

At what point did I say I found it hard to understand? Reread my posts, please.

I would have thought it quite clear that I was not being completely serious with that scenario, but rather making the point that some parents are idiots who don't think about what they are buying for thier kids. They just buy it and then, if they happen to find out it has content they have a problem with, they go to a lawyer and start demanding laws to protect them from their own complete lack of parental involvement.

Again, please reread my posts. I think you jumped to several wrong conclusions and have unfairly judged me.

As to the rest of your post, I don't know anything about the website you mention, no I don't think guys "bitching" about limited or sub-par Yuri releases is the reason there aren't so many of them, yes I think it's the lack of them in Japan, you're probably correct about why manga licensors are doing so much to capture the female audience and I applaud them for that though I think they might be running a risk focusing on one type of story exclusively, personally I like a number of shoujo leads probably because they remind me of girls I've known in real life, and I can't comment on the authors you mention as I'm unsure if I've read them.

In closing, I'd like to point out that calling someone a homophobe is a rather heavy charge. I would appreciate it if you were a little more careful when throwing that charge around.

But there's Haruhi in Ouran, and he's well liked even among the BL fandom. Plus, there's a new manga released Stateside, Special A, where the heroine, Hikari Hanazono, is a smart and competitive girl (although she's dense on the romantic stuff at the moment).

Aya from Ceres was no less annoying than Miaka. She was fine in the beginning but became pretty needy about Touya in the end. It seems that Watase is better at doing BL so far with Sakura Gari, but I'm always, always waiting for the fail. It's any day now.

Richard.

I'm sorry
I forgot the quote marks
I'd probably respond "I'm buying it for me. Are you a homophobe that it bothers you so much?"

I wasn't applying it to you, but to said random clerk who would assume such a thing if he saw my teen standing next to me in line.
And you'd be surprised just how homophobic this little town is. Not necessarily blatant, but stupid little random comments people make without thinking like "Don't bend over in Hillcrest!" I like throwing out "Are you a homophobe" to people in person because a lot of people don't think they are, so it makes them think about it.

And because I forgot the quote marks, you took my overall tone wrong.
I'm sorry.
I know you from the other threads.

I was just questioning how we got to 7 Tammy yr old reading yaoi. When I saw what looked like a 8-10 yr old girl picking up Boy Princess Postcards at Comic-con, I tried to point out to the mom what the book was about, but mom didn't care. Fine. I'm sure the girl thought Nicole was a girl because one card looks like he's in an evening gown (like the promo shot of Kazuki & Jubei from GetBackers). I also question if parents are paying attention to their under 12's watching FMA about a couple of boys who quite literally lose an arm & a leg & much more trying to bring their dead mother back to life. It reminds me of the scene in Better off Dead (or is it the Summer one with John Cusak) where the kid says s/he knows about sex from sex ed in school & dad is happy about his taxdollars at work or however that scene plays out.

Quote:
A big old Parental Advisory notice and a rating is on something, they don't even bother to look beyond the title. But at least if mom or dad do raise a fuss, the publisher is safe. Buyer beware-parents screwed up. Issue could be taken with store selling said material--maybe the clerks should be ID-ing people buying yaoi. The fall-out would likely fall on the store for selling it to minors.

The opposite is just as stupid. I've seen under-12's unable to buy Fruits Basket because their folks religiously believe in the age ratings, maturity of their own child be damned. My sister's best friend wasn't allowed to see 1776 with the rest of her class because the only PG movies they allowed her to see was the ones with John Wayne because the folks knew he was ok.

Actually, it's this site where the guys seem to whine about not enough yuri, then whine about what they do get. They whine about all the yaoi getting licensed, but it always seems as though the gals squeal over this & that title being licensed & don't particularly complain that title A got licensed instead of title C, though they long for Title C to get picked up. Over on the thread announcing MediaBlasters putting out some yuri anime, guys were complaining there probably wouldn't be a dub. Or they licensed XXX manga instead of YYY. The gals seem happy with whatever bone's thrown their way & ask for more. I never knew how many people were also buying Shonen Onmyoji until Geneon went down & everyone started crying about SO, KKM & Saiunkoku.

Ariel-
Haruhi isn't a typical female heroine. She's one of those gals who likes comfortable clothes over looking stylish. She doesn't ooh & ahhh over typical girly stuff. She's more boyish than some boys we see.

I have issues with a lot of Watase's female characters which is why I have a hard time reading her stuff. Her guys are nice enough, but the girls tend to be annoying. Aya is less than Miaka, but it does seem the longer a shojo title goes, the more likely it'll head south. Absolute Boyfriend-I like Night, but... gahr. It's pissing me off. Alice 19 or whatever(Now I have music from Alice 9, I get them confused) annoying female. From Far Away worked for me because the girl didn't get too annoying, but Red River I dropped less for an annoying heroine as the annoying stereotype wicked step mom neverending plots. I've been to the "Kill all the girls & let the boys have Fruits Basket" for some time now. Tohru is soooooooooo good. Practically Mother Theresa.
