Except Kami, Hyougo was the town used as the model, at least for the KyoAni anime adaption. Here's a pilgrimage report I found.

The Dezaki version also takes place in/ uses Kami as inspiration, so...?

I was going to say myself that those character designs haven't aged well. Their facial features are vertically compressed.
