It was a good episode. I have to admit that I was half hoping a way would be found to not have to burn down that particular house just so Shiori wouldn't be sad, but I can live with it. Knowing that the old woman was getting a special thank you in the film and that the house would live on in the movie definitely helped.

Episode 8

And we have another Shiori arc, which I have better feeling about. Well the last arc was kind about her stuck in the past, and now it is her I think looking towards the future. Shiori I think is the character I am most fascinated by she has spent her entire life in the town so much that she feels like a reflection of it, and her rerserved nature that makes her seem so "normal" actually makes her feel like the most abnormal for an anime. She did feel like she might the character that the merchants would listen to handle the situation since she is the one that most has her head on her shoulders on the topic.

I know that Ririko's grandmother is kind of harsh in ways in that she is generally opposing the board, but as it goes on I can't help but respect her. She had a good point against the manju. Also, kind of funny at the two old people going at each other.

Also, rumours.

Episode 9

Yoshino's idea did not really work out, especially since it seems to have also been wildly unreliable, but Shiori did manage it. I kind of like it that the mommies club beat out both the tourism board and merchants.

Also, just realised sandals is likely foreign because of blonde hair and blue eyes, and then even more that the way he spoke probably already pushed that way.

Episode 10

A supernatural element in this show?
Like, all the episode titles have fantasy names without having any of that, but the end of this episode seems to kind of leave hints to it. Not sure if that would distract from what this show has been otherwise doing. Resident crazy guy hints at things too.

Anyway, the real focus character of the episode was Ririko. After finding out the talk about Ran from Atom The Beginning likely being on the autism spectrum, here kind of looked that Ririko might also be classified under it. There was quite a bit of focus that she has often found herself having trouble fitting in, problems communicating and expressing herself which led to her not liking the local dance, and a keen interest in a niche topic. She actually seems super down in the episode over her problems with socialising, it being the focus of the episode. I actually can super relate with her, it might look like she is not trying or something, but I can empathise with the times in a similar situation and ending up feeling really depressed over everyone else having an easy time. It actually gives me a big change in perception of how she is with the people around her like best friend and grandmother, who seems to have a good grasp of her granddaughter.

That ending was pretty bizarre. I'm not so sure if there is a supernatural element involved, or whether it was coincidental that the dragon statue broke just as a crazy guy is emerging from the river? I dunno. I guess we'll find out next week.

And yes, I would agree that Riri seems to be affected by something more than just run-of-the-mill social awkwardness.

Episode 12

Hearing that there is a problem brings up thoughts of the worst possible situation, and yet it was not what would be expected. With how this show has set up being pretty grounded, it kind of makes it all the more nail biting in how their plan for the festival could fall on its face, that expecting miracles is kind of crazy. And there is a bit of drama there with the director guy who also wants to see his home town do well.

But what was kind of nice here was how this documentary like plot allowed us to see how the characters have kind of grown, which more specifically was with how Yoshino has kind of helped them do so. She commented that she feels like she is the one who has not grown, along with the director not knowing how to frame her, which had a sort of meta feel to it. I also laughed quite a bit when they started filming, Shiori was trying to put on that really professional look with the glasses, and Ririko was wearing that fox mask. Laughing Along with Sandal showing up for his usual oddness, or Ririko's grandmother being insistent on the part with her granddaughter being included. This show can have this weird way at just making me laugh when there is not necessarily that much happening.

I hope everything goes well.

That was a great eppie. I can't wait to see how the documentary actually turns out. I have a feeling it's going to be hilarious and embarrassing for all involved. So happy this show is 2-cours.

Episode 13

Well it was not the total horrific disaster I was fearing, but it was also not entirely what they hoped for. It was kind of a dick move that the band actually had someone with a loud speaker go over to the trivia competition and call people over to the concert. And the band were not exactly kind to the town by calling it middle of nowhere and the like. The tv program undercut all the work by kind of making it about the band rather than what they have done with the town.

It was pretty funny with Sandal winning the trivia competition, saying that he would invite someone to go with him who had no interest to do so. His name is apparently actually Alexandre Cena Davis Celibidache. I thought the name was familiar, it has been popping up in the OP credits as apparently the original creator, Alexandre S. D. Celibidache, which means Sandal might be a creator insert character, or I don't know as I can't find anything else about this man.

I can imagine the sort of depressed feeling Yoshino would have now.

I was kind of hoping the documentary was going to be funnier. Honestly, after 13 episodes, the constant failure of the town revival attempts is starting to wear a little thin. It's a 2-cours show, so obviously there can't be any big turnaround yet, but throw us a little bone at least. At the midpoint of the series, it makes sense to have the main character at a low point, but it's not hugely fun to watch. Presumably, Yoshino is headed back to Tokyo to lick her wounds.

Episode 14

The new OP feels like it emphasises a sense of supporting Yoshino, that the real development of Yoshino is to come.

For an episode that had so much of the characters (Yoshino, Sanae and Maki) seeing friends apparently having fulfilling lives in a way that looks like they might be missing out, being even offered some chances to join those areas, this actually felt like a breath of fresh air. Yoshino especially was getting a look back at her hometown, and a number of ideas. Shiori and Ririko working on ideas to accommodate visitors to the town with B&B, which frankly is probably a good idea did not have things already for people staying over.

Oh, and there are a group strangers in the town. I laughed when asking about weird people they were able to point to Sandal who happened to be there, guy always has perfect timing. But according to the Crunchyroll subtitles, the fairly large group at the end are Spanish speakers, who for some reason on mass have come to the town, and despite their shirts with Japanese words do not seem to understand that maybe knowing a few could help not terrify locals. But stumped of what it is so far, I was thinking cult at first, but while writing I had the thought that maybe rather than a literal cult it will be that movie that was shot in the town happened to get a cult following somewhere. At least as an anime fan I have heard of people doing things like going to the real setting of something they like.

Geez, DP, this seems like our own personal thread. We gotta stop meeting like this. Wink

Yes, it was interesting seeing the group mostly dispersed. My hope is that we are going to start to see some modest successes with the town revival efforts instead of just continuous failures.

The B&B proposal is a good idea, for sure. I had to laugh at Riri's statement that if she ever rented out her place it would have to be to a girl...

...who liked UMAs. Oh Riri, never change.

Eh, I have at times been the only one to comment in some threads, I am pretty sure it is not from lack of interest in the show. Nowadays the review threads get a lot of traffic.

As for episode 15. My current theory is that I suspect what is in the lake could be something that may have been mistaken as a UMA in the past, or look like there was active work to try and trick people, even if it was an accident in the past. Something that will be bad enough to really harm Kadota's honour.

I quite liked the episode in general with the foreigners, that could almost come down to not being Japanese unlike what really the main audience for this show. There is something meta in talking like that. I think the most pleasant surprise was Ririko finding someone she was so easily getting along with, and someone from another country at that. It also seems to have had Ririko starting to question whether she would be interested to leave her hometown for the larger world, of course that she could always come back. Actually might really be interesting kind of posing what it would take for the other way around of getting people to come to the town.

I am quite curious about the mystery in Sakura Pond. Oh and I want a "We come in peach" T-shirt.

Episode 16

You must track down the three sacred treasures. I like how that sounds so quest like.

As for the episode, I like how it gave some nice context to three of the older characters, especially Kadota and Ririko's grandmother. They were having the opportunity to leave behind the sleepy town to go to Tokyo for their music, but he stopped them from going, not from him being afraid of going, but that he did not want to feel like he was running away, not abandon the town. And the different face of Ririko's grandmother, that she actually wanted to leave the town, which flies right against the appearance she likes to give. I found it quite sad when she was saying that part of her was gone, like the hint that she has had to supress it against what she might want, but she was cool when she then encouraged Ririko to not have regrets and to go out if she wants. This also came to a head when her new friend also said that one day they should go see the world together, a sweet moment.

Ririko's granny was pretty cute when she was young - rowr. And that rock song about roses and maggots was hilarious. We certainly understand why Ririko's granny and The Chief have been bickering all these years. Beef, Olive and Poison, ha ha.
