Why do the games have "Muv-Luv" in the title?

The series is a big bait-and-switch, where the first game presents itself as an utterly generic harem rom-com, the kind of thing for which "Muv-Luv" would be a perfect, silly title. Specifically, it's a play on "mabudachi", which means "true friends".

In the big picture, you can say it comes back to that, just by being about other kinds of love: the love of comrades in arms, the love of a good leader for his or her people, etc.
