Yeah, we're barely 1/3rd through the shows, a little early to declare the fall a total flop. Also it's pretty rare for the really good shows to be aired at the start of the season, usually the good stuff hits on the weekend.

Mr. Osomatsu - Hilarious and the episode premise of trying to change their future reminded me of an episode of a British comedy called Red Dwarf. While the comedy can be a bit crude at times it has a good heart to it. This has a very good chance of being the best comedy of the season.

Urahara - Cute, fluffy, and completely harmless. I get what they were trying for and it is nice to see an anime that is bright and happy but the lack of stakes meant that it was somewhat boring. The show also had a poor narrative structure but I will give it another episode to see if it gets better.

Having now read all the reviews so far of new series this season, none of them sounded very inspiring. I was hoping my initial take on this season was wrong, but it doesn't look that way based on the reviews.
It is still early in the season and it really depends on the type of genre you like. I thought that UQ Holder was great but that is because action, harem, and vampires are three of my favorite genres.

Glad TubiTV has an app, so I can watch Infiniti Force without the PC. Now, if Viz would add Naruto Shippuden to them, I would be happy.

King's Game is.... hillarious. I think it really wants to be taken seriously but it comes off like a 14 year old writing edgy fanfiction to try and impress his older brother. Everything about this show screams EDGE! This might be the funniest anime of the season though especially if they try and explain the death somehow. The only "plausible" way to explian it is to say it's a curse/magic. Try and bring science into this and it will fall flat on its face... then errupt in a geyser of blood while "crawling in my skin" can be heard in the background.

Yeah, it's that kind of show.

@ ChibiKangeroo - correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect the only reason you found the Summer season "surprisingly strong" was because of the undeniably awesome Made in Abyss, right? Did anything else strike your fancy? I don't expect to encounter a show as good as Made in Abyss this season either, but that doesn't mean I also think it will be "meh" as usual. Besides the Ancient Magus' Bride, there's the second season of March Comes in Like a Lion, the second season of Blood Blockade Battlefront, the second season of Himouto!, the second season of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, Recovery of an MMO Addict, the reboot of Kino's Journey and a number of others which, based on their summaries, may be in my wheelhouse but I won't know until I see the execution. In other words, it's a promising season for somebody who doesn't have a perpetually sour outlook on 99.9% of what anime offers these days.

I haven't watched the first episode of Kings Game yet but if they follow the manga oooh boy this is gonna be on Mirai Nikki levels of bad, I had the 5 volumes of the manga (and the 5 volumes of the sequel) and it doesn't get any better, it's shock "horror" gore porn for the sake of it until the end, it's stupid but it kinda knows that so you just go with it, sometimes it's hilarious sometimes otherwise I wouldn't actually bought those 10 volumes in the first place. It's bad but it's entertaining to see what they're gonna come up with next

Konohana kitan was okay, but I was somewhat annoyed at the character. Two of them are jerks (one outside and one inside), one seems to be just a kid, another seems to slack off and half ass everything and the headmaid seems to never work. How did this inn stay in business?

Otherwise, nothing for me yet, I haven't tried UQ holder, but the resource don't seem to be there to make it stand out. I quiet liked the action portion of negima, so I should find it at least entertaining. Juni taisen and king game seems to be build on shock value which I find uniteresting. Neither Gintama nor Osomatsu can get laugh out of me (plus it sounds like Gintama just become a shonen after awhile). I'm not interested in idol and sentai. Urahara sounds like it lands just shy of B-level shlock "so bad it's good", enough passion behind it to make laughing at it awkward but not enough skill/talent to make it good. Sengoku night blood sounds idea bankrupt from the get go. And I never understood why people watch show about other people enjoying good food.

So, regarding King's Game: What happens if you get the occasional teenager without a cell phone? Or does King only target classes where every student has a phone capable of receiving text messages?

King's Game - 2.5/5: Well, those where 21 minutes of mindless entertainment. The premise is dumb, but there was not a dull moment, and I like the character designs for the girls. I might add this to my viewing list if I need to fill a slot.

Just Because! - 4/5: High school based, contemplative, slice of life shows with a touch of romance have become some of my favorite kinds of anime, and Just Because!'s premiere did not disappoint me. The character designs and animation are a bit odd but kind of interesting. The direction, music and background art are also very strong. I think this show is a winner.

It sort of reminds me of Oyuki Konno's explanation for why the characters in one of her light novels don't pull out their cell phones and call each other after they got separated at an amusement park: her stories are set in an alternate universe version of Japan, in which teenagers have decided that, since they spend at least half of their waking hours attending schools that prohibit cell phone use, owning a cell phone would be a waste of money. It might not make any sense in reality, but since her stories take place in a slightly different universe from our own, it makes sense to her characters! Wink

...which is to say, maybe King's Game simply takes place in an alternate universe where every Japanese teenager has a cell phone, so King doesn't have to worry about it. Laughing

I think what BodaciousSpacePirate is trying to say is that the answer to the question "Why does everyone in King's Game have a cell phone?" is "Because f*** you, that's why!".

I think URAHARA would have been fairly decent as shorts, or if the plot had progressed about three times further than it did in its premiere. It spent what seemed to be most of this episode's runtime trying to show off how quirky it is, despite being less weird than an average Trigger show. I'll give it another episode or two to see if it manages to find its legs, but the odds don't look promising.

I was expecting Konohana Kitan to be very similar to Urara Meirocho which I didn't like, but instead it somehow feels more like a Manga Time Kirara adaptation so it hooked me. Hopefully following both this and Blend S at the same time won't make me feel overwhelmed.

Juni Taisen: Zodiac War was enjoyable enough, but a lot of that was due to psycho stripper bunny. There's a chance I'll lose interest partway through, but it was entertaining enough to stick with for however long it feels fun to me, and it seems like it might get more interesting rather than less.

King's Game: If suicide by failing to obey the King was his intent, it would have been better to wait for an individual task or general rule so he wouldn't have to consider dragging someone down with him, and predictably be reprimanded for it, though we wouldn't have a main character and more would have died from sleeping in violation of the rules. Probably best not to think too hard about the show however. Juni Taisen is a better gorefest overall but since Thursdays look light, I'll probably stick with this.

Just Because!: That's more like it. A well done, thoughtful, and compelling enough slice of life and romance. They've definitely got me invested in the characters already; I was smiling when Souma hit that out of the park homerun. I'd say not bad for Pine Jam's second full length outing, but I liked their first one - last season's Gamers! - quite a bit too.

For anyone interested there is a prequal to King's Game on crunchyroll's manga section called King's Game Origin.

Jacob Chapman seems to have terrible taste in Romance anime (and many other genres, honestly). "Tsuki ga Kirei" was perfect. "Just Because!" started off slow but it definitely shows a lot of potential. Art was really good too.

Ou-sama game was outright awful. What's the point in it if there's no way for them to fight back? If the King can just kill anyone instantly with magic, then how do the "players" fight back? It just seems like the King has no way to lose and that's no fun. It's just gore porn. The show seems like it will just about HOW everyone dies, and how disgusting they are willing to be to survive. spoiler[ The next episode will trigger people. One of the next orders is for Hondo to "hook up" with another dude, right after she confessed and kissed Main Character. She'll either do that, and be disloyal to him, or she'll remain loyal and die. Either way will trigger people.]
