I saw that movie three times and I still never caught the Cowboy Bebop ship! So many references.

I enjoyed it. It was good. I'm about to read the novel, see how different the film is from it. I know there some differences. I know Ultraman couldn't be on screen due to never-ending law suits in Japan. I'm glad some stuff from anime-video games got in.

I read the book before seeing the movie and as I said you'll notice the pacing is very different

He could have gone with any giant robot and he went with Gundam... I would have gone with Getter Robo or Gurren Lagann or GaoGaiGar and ended the fight in seconds. (^.^')

The book and movie are mainly centered around 80's pop culture.

Getter Robo was 70's. Gurren Lagan was 00's. GaoGaiGar was 90's.
None are bad choices, but they don't fit the primary theme of the film

Although Gundam first started in 79, it was present though multiple series throughout the 80's and is one of the world's most recognizable robots.

Now, if we restrict selection to 80's robots, my choice would have been Gunbuster.

Maybe the character is a Gundam fan? Besides, it wouldn't make sense to have the others as they aren't as well known in pop culture.

But it was a good movie, not great, but good. Though the antagonist kept me thinking of Michael Buffer from Zohan. The over cliched evil corporate president trope is actually boring now.

Ah, excellent choice. I like how all the robot names seem to begin with "G" too. Gundam, Getter Robo, Gunbuster, GaoGaiGar, Gurren Lagann...
