For those of you cheering this news because you'll get to enjoy future chapters:

Watsuki used royalties from manga sales and merchandising to buy his child pornography. He will use either the old royalties and merchandiskng money or the new money he'll get from them in the future to also pay his slap-on-the-wrist fine.

Congratulations. If from his arrest until now you've spent any money on anything that gives Watsuki monry (or will in the future), you will have knowingly aided and abetted a pedophile.

But who cares, because at least you'll get to read your preciois manga, right?

One thing I wanted to make clear. It was illegal, so some punishment was in order. The fact that the mangaka's was so light is unjust, to me. But that means the law is unjust. Nonetheless, it was illegal, as has been pointed out by the above (or one of the above depending on who posts before this gets done and up. So while the legality is not one I find just, it was illegal, so it isn't wholly some "different values" thing. The people of Japan obviously DO care, even if I hope they take it seriously.

So my whole reason in teasing and babbling that last paragraph out was to say that I am not interested in the parts of debating the sentence. Too light, but in the past. I'm concerned with those who are talking of this as if it isn't morally repugnant and horrific, who act like it shouldn't matter at all what he did and are all "oh well" about it, and those whose statement make it seem like the Japanese are fine with this.

This is outside of the topic, but having to do with comments about the approaches to legality of Japan and the US (among other nations). While both countries find this an evil practice, the argument could be made that the laws in both countries essentially make this evil more likely to occur. In Japan, it's by not punishing harshly enough, and in the US, it's by having laws that are not just harsh as they should be, but in their design make it almost impossible for someone who knows it's sick and wrong, but wants treatment and help.

And NO, this is not me. This is about an article I read several months ago, when the arrest first broke, about folks that struggle with these urges, and don't want to give in, but can't get help really. It was either here in the comments (posted by someone else) or somewhere else online when I was researching this topic about the mangaka's crimes for discussion and blogging, that I came across the piece.

Now, is the mangaka sorry and truly repentant? I don't know as the heart of each person (until their behavior proves otherwise) is beyond the knowledge of any one of us except that person and (for those who are religious) God. But I am skeptical given how quickly he returned that he has truly done reflection and repentance, sought help, etc. I will pray he has.

I read that the Toriko manga author had a very succesful manga in the early 2000s and it was cancelled after he was put in jail for having sex with a 16 years old prostitute, looks like the more money you make the less punishment you get.

On the one hand, I am relieved that Ruroken wasn't canceled.
On the other hand, this sentencing was far too light for the crime committed.
He didn't even do any jail time, is he a registered as a sex offender at least?
The light way that the Japanese police seem to be handling this is disturbing to me... Neutral

This matters not to me. In my mind, Kenshin ended a long time ago. I will still keep Watsuki’s original 28 volume manga series on my shelf as it was a big part of my eventual anime fandom, but I can’t in good conscious support him any further.

It was to be expected, wasn't it?
As I like Kenshin a bit, I'm glad it's continuing

Such nonsense warped logic. If I go buy a burger from a restaurant and then the waiter uses their tip money I gave them to buy a gun and kill someone I certainly had no part in the murder. This situation is no different.

Pedophiles are mentally ill people. Until they've reached the point of physically harming a child personally society needs to focus on providing them psychological help rather than attempting to completely ruin their life and destroy any chance of recovery.

Seriously people, Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro was arrested for actually having sex with a minor and Shonen Jump took him back. He later created TORIKO and y'all watched/read that and enjoyed it and never said anything.

I might read this or I might not when it is collected. I know I'm not going to let guys on the internet guilt trip me into making my choice.

Actually your analogy is completely wrong because you know he owned child pornography and are still giving him money.

If I give money to a waiter and he later buys a gun and shoots someone I can't predict the future.

So yes by monetarily supporting future works of Watsuki you are now knowingly supporting child pornography.

And people need to stop saying until he hurts real children. He DID hurt real children by using his money to buy films from an industry that hurt children.

He may need help but he's not getting that either. At most he got a slap on the wrist and he continues making tons of money. Even though the money he got before was used to hurt children.

I knew they couldnt keep it on hiatus forever but this was a lot faster than expected not that Im complaining.

Forget the past, lets move to the future and enjoy more Kenshin
I believe in the concept of forgiveness but it was a 6 month hiatus for a serious crime so there is a reason why a lot of people are upset about this news. I get that Kenshin is a huge manga but it is still baffling that they decided to resume the manga so quickly.

I would like to hope they wouldn't release it but Viz is apparently going to digitally release the English translation of the Toriko author's one shot manga in Shonen Jump in spite of his own horrible history.
To be fair that incident with the Toriko author wasn't as bad and it happened 16 years ago.

Pretty much. The original series that I have in its entirety I still have (thought I probably won't be reading it again anytime soon) but I will not support him. The fact of the matter is that this is not something he gets to live down. Ever. And the fact that Shueisha is bringing him back after so short a time is very questionable. It does not reflect well on them.

This comment section is so gross. People are defending child porn lol. It doesn't matter what country it is in, child porn is child porn!!! The fact that some of u want to sweep this undernthe rug because you want a manga to continue is laughable at best. Holy crap. This is why anime fans get such a bad rap, it's because of situations exactly like this. He WAS FOUND GUILTY. A child's life was ruined because he funded that digusting act. Get off your high horse people. This manga should crash a burn for all I care.
