Isn't this "loss" due to the production costs of making the ffxv season 2 dlc?
They haven't released their product yet. Am I missing something?

Yeah kinda hard to post anything but a loss when you haven't released a product yet.

From my understanding they're working on something completely new and not on other Squre properties.

They're working on both the FFXV Season 2 DLC and a new IP.

This sounds to me like a non-story and simply related to the initial start-up costs of a new studio/division.

So this is a likely a calculated loss and that Square Enix intends for the division to make money once it ships whatever it is working on, which will likely be years from now.

Anything involving Tabata in developing is gonna take 5 years plus and countless re writes so its not a surprise when they are making a loss.
Damn I could make a AAA FF title in the time it takes Tabata to settle on a story

I'm shocked to hear that Square-Enix is burning cash with nothing to show for it. That totally isn't like them. /s Couldn't find any finer staff for burning cash via development hell than the ones responsible for FF15.

I dunno if I would trust them with a new IP, seeing as the only thing they could come up with for FF15 was to mash literally every single previous FF world aesthetic into one game. Oh, and make a poor man's Monster Hunter combat system.

Not a great couple of weeks for Square Enix. First The Quiet Man, now this.

not just this, but now Tabata has left Square and they've canceled the remaining FFXV DLC save for Episode Ardyn. I think Square seriously needs to sit down and figure out what to do with itself. FF has consistently had troubled productions for several games now and it's constituting a pattern.
