Well, I mean, original Fruits Basket worked on the angle of "Come for the animal hugging hijinks, stay for crippling depression!" but frankly, FB:A lacks any of the initial supernatural draw OR the "stay for the ___" bit.
I guess "come for the descendants of the Furuba characters (now in highschool), stay for the boring girl!" doesn't work out quite as well once you learn that the offspring are basically designed to be personality repeats of their parents to begin with, so what's the point?

I can hear her editors now, "When are you going to give us another Fruits Basket". The same thing from her fans by letter and at signings for other series. The Point is probably just to shut up those voices she was tired of hearing. That might even explain the title.

It is not as though anything else she has done is all that popular, or good.

Yeah, she's definitely a one hit wonder. I quite like Liselotte and the Witch's Forest but it appears to be on indefinite hiatus. Twinkle Stars was OK I guess? Not bad but totally forgettable.

At this point, she's a one-hit wonder, but I at least give her props for still trying. At least making something average doesn't really erase the good thing (making something dismal on the other hand? That would be a bit more damaging). It kind of reminds me of Saki Hiwatari a bit, Please Save My Earth was huge (and really damn good), and she's made some other stuff, but it's all been pretty average (CMX even put out Tower of the Future). At least her PSME sequel series (there's apparently two now) were more well thought out though and at least knew fans wanted to see the old cast.
Though I do sometimes wonder if it would be better for one-hit wonders to just continue to ride their one mega-hit series (it's worked quite well for Sailor Moon, for example. I really wish she'd help her husband out more with HxH), though I guess not every mega hit is going to be Sailor Moon or Pokemon enduring either.
In the case of GTO though, the guy just keeps making various spin-offs, and frankly his other stuff is so awful that making good GTO spinoffs is clearly the way to go that one.
Clearly the worst thing a one-hit wonder can do it then come out as a pedophile with loads of kiddie porn (*cough*Ruroni Kenshin*cough*), so she's well above that! (To be fair, it never stopped Toriko from gaining success!)

I am reading the first chapters of the One Piece manga because a certain somebody sent me death threats if I didn't. Laughing

Recent manga I've completed:

NG Life. From the author of Yona of the Dawn, this was absolutely fantastic and much originality. I recommend it, probably not just to shoujo fans but to everyone. It revolves around a high school boy who cannot erase the memories from his past life 1,900 years ago as a gladiator of Pompeii
Yup, that's a new one, isn't it? Cool

Read Super Dimensional Love Gun, which is actually put out by Fakku, but my comic shop had it $5, therefore, I picked it up. It reminds me an awful lot of Junji Ito. Except where Junji Ito makes you fear random everyday objects, this will make you look at random body parts and body fetishes the same way instead. It's like Junji Ito but for bizarre fetishes! No feet here, nothing that common can be here! And yeah, it is explicit, so I guess if that was something you also wanted from Junji Ito, this should satisfy that itch Twisted Evil
In all seriousness though, I do recommend this. For Junji Ito fans. Who either want or don't mind body fan service and disservice.

Mainly Berserk, about 10 vols until I’m finally caught up. I still love Guts’ fantastical journey of bloody vengeance and heartwarming healing, but once you hit the twenties volume-wise it becomes super evident pacing isn’t Miura’s strong suit. Otherwise I’d be plowing through these arcs. As it is, I have to be in the mood to bite off another small chunk.

Also Planetes. I expected good things from this one after watching the goofy yet reasonably cynical and generally well-made anime, but manga Hachi’s poignant struggles with a near-impossible dream and the isolation that accompanies it are damn compelling. Of course the art is fantastic as well; this *was* done by the Vinland Saga guy.

I've been enjoying Dorohedoro (shocking, right?) which is full of bizarre imagery, carnage, dark humor and stars a lizardman. How have I only recently discovered this?

Also reading the color edition of Akira hoping it will clear up some confusion from the film and so far... nope. Razz I had reservations about Battle Angel Alita once the motorball started cause I don't care for sports stories, but it won me over with strong character writing.

Been on a bit of a Yuri and Spooky kick. I've gotten the latest volumes of Kiss and White Lily and Bloom Into You, as well as the one shot manga Eclair. It's nice reading sweeter yuri manga after reading through NTR and Citrus. The more "forceful" yuri titles get to be tiresome for me after a while.

I figured since it's October I'd also read some appropriate manga to fit the mood. I hauled out my copies of Ghost Talkers Daydream, The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, & I continued on with Happiness. They certainly got me in the spooky spirit. Though it was a bit odd switching back and forth between them and sweeter yuri titles.

My eight-year-old and I both read Yotsuba&! vol. 14 today and I (and certainly not my eight-year-old) read No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault... vol. 12. The latter has some sweet and perceptive lines, such as "I can say I've matured enough not to get shaken, but in a sense my life's also gotten more dull". When it's good (specifically, when its comedy is based on observation rather than on message-board references, or whatever), I always find it really good.

@Psycho101
I dropped Happiness when spoiler[the nipples were cut off.] Too gross for me. Or, to put it another way, spoiler[no nipples no read] (?)

Since I love Planet With, I decided to check out some of Mizukami's manga.

The first one I read was Spirit Circle. There are 5 volumes out right now in English, but I got so hooked that I read the final volume via scans (don't worry I'm still going to buy it). It's now one of my favorite manga. Watching Fuuta and Kouko's other lives unfold and how they each make some progress in different ways was a satisfying journey. I also couldn't help but find Fortuna pathetic, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an asshole.

Second manga was Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. I managed to find the whole series on ebay for a reasonable price. It was a slow start, but I found myself interested in the plot. The characters were a problem. After loving the characters in PW and SC, BH was a let down. I didn't hate any of the characters, but felt indifferent about most of them. Hell, I couldn't remember some of their names as I was reading because they just didn't make any sort of lasting impression. I liked Hangetsu, Mikazuki, Yayoi, and Hyou and some of the animals. Animus was a rather meh villain, but thematically he was a perfect villain for a series about becoming an adult.

I still need to read Sengoku Youko and of course there's the ongoing Planet With adaption.

^ I personally think Spirit Circle is the better series myself. I do hope the Planet With manga gets licensed too!

As for me, I feel like I've forgotten half of what I've read, but here's the half I do remember! But damn, it's really been since September since I laster posted on here? Damn!

Satoko & Nada vol 1
Yeah, this just isn't my sort of thing. I'm not big on 4-koma or slice of life to begin with. But I also feel like the main focus was more like "wow, Nada is a Muslim and does all these things!" and I feel like that was the entire focus of the manga. IT wasn't about life in America or college in America (I often forgot she was even IN college IN America), it was more about her Muslim roommate and her also Muslim friends and cultural differences. I dunno, if this sounds more interesting to you, I'd rent it first.

DRRR! v 1-4 (arc 1)
I enjoyed it! It had its own mini-plot going through it, but it's clearly also not the end of the series and I'm looking forward to more!

Princess Jellyfish v8,9 (finished)
I finished off the series, hooray! I was getting pretty "eh" towards the end though. I feel like the series went from "we're being successful at making dresses!" to "oops, no, we screwed up and are in the red" way too many times by the end for my taste, so it was about time for it to end. I'm also a bit disappointed that spoiler[she rejects the older brother dude, I really don't see the point in rejecting that romance]

Twinkle Stars vol 3
I feel like I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with this series, with the lead being a bit too wishy-washy for my taste. It's a vast departure from proactive Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, this girl is a bit more ok with just kind of.... doing the "sitting around, waiting for him to love her back" sort of thing and it's not super interesting. Now, when things focus on NOT her, it's not too bad.

My Brother's Husband vol 2 (complete)
Another volume of mostly how Japan views gays and gay culture, but hey, don't change what's not wrong! I was honestly sad to see it end though. We saw more about Mike and Ryoji though, and that was sweet! It's a solid series that's just the right length to not overstay its welcome. Though, once again, I was reminded that the guy tends to do bara, since there were a few more loving muscley scenes in here.

To Your Eternity
Caught up a few more vols! I think I read vol 4-7ish? Anyway, it's still just as good as it started out and we've gotten a lot of good character development on Fushi, which continues to make him more interesting as the series goes on. Definitely still a must read from me!

Land of the Lustrous 3-6
I'm past the anime now! The anime ends a little into vol 5 (though I think one thing got rearranged a bit earlier in the anime). I still honestly really prefer the anime version here, it adds a lot to the setting and action while still preserving the story. We've got more mysteries coming up and more interesting things happening. I jsut wish the series didn't have a tendency to just... keep making up gems as is needed, I thought these gem people were in limited quantities? I really do hope we get more anime though!

Blue Morning 1-4
I'm not normally into yaoi, but this has so few sex scenes that I'm game! And it's really more a period-piece drama with political alliance and backstabbing, hooray! It does require a good amount of concentration for me (some of the damn names are just too similar to me, it would seem), but I am overall enjoying it a lot.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime vol 3-5
Still good stuff! Even though Rimuru is completely overpowered (which I do find a bit boring), there's enough else going on in the world's politics that he and the audience are still learning that's the real draw here.

Made in Abyss 1-3
Another good series from Seven Seas! Gotta say, outside of their monster girl harem line, they got some good stuff! I love seeing the world and mysteries develop as we go furhter down into the abyss and I'm eager to see what happens next!

Mob Psycho 100 vol 1
Stupid fun! The art is definitely... the best ONE can do I guess? But it works well and it never interferes with the story and it works with it, in a strange way. I just wish someone other than Dark Horse got it because you know they're not gonna advertise it and if it doesn't sell well, then they'll axe it halfway through and be like "uuuh, I dunno why it didn't sell!" like they tend to do.

I have just gotten back into the manga fandom and decided to start with catching up to My Hero Academia. It's over 200 chapters in but at about fifteen minutes per chapter, that isn't too difficult for me to catch up on.

This is the first long-running shonen anime since Yu Yu Hakusho that I like which says a lot since I was never a big fan of the likes of Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. The concept of a teen having to earn every power he gets while starting from the bottom through exceptional work ethics in a society of people outright given powers from birth is a recipe for a great shonen.

Only two volumes in but I look forward to checking out the anime once I read through the entire series up to the latest week and finally getting into theory crafting with other fans.
