It'll be interesting to see what they have planned. I wonder if this means there might be increased interest in Japan in marketing and developing IP directly with the US market again; and hopefully it won't end the way as it did last time.

I don't see it that way. This looks more like a failsafe to have some extra control when it comes to handeling properties. |

Among other things, I bet this will play into Toho's future plans for the Godzilla franchise; it was announced a while back that Toho wanted to start producing their own Godzilla films again, or co-producing/financing with other international companies.
