I've been in a Yamato obsession mode lately. I've been watching the anime reboot and really enjoying it and I just bought the manga today and already started reading it and I'm enjoying Matsumoto's old school art style. I hope we can eventually one day get the original anime licensed.

As a naval historian by avocation, I find the history of the actual IJN Yamato and her sister ships to be almost as fascinating and compelling as Matsumoto's manga or the anime franchise which it spawned.

There were originally to be four ships of the class, two were built, Yamato and Musashi, one was cancelled, the other was converted in mid-construction to an aircraft carrier but not launched until late 1944 under heavy secrecy. In May, 1945 the Navy attempted to sail the ship from the port where she was being outfitted to the Military Zone at Nagasaki, despite her only being partly outfitted and her watertight doors not completely tested. She was spotted the first night out by an American submarine and sank. However, the secrecy surrounding her had been so good that the C.O. of the sub was not officially given credit for the sinking until after the war ended, the military so-called-intelligence wonks simply refused to believe that Japan had another carrier they didn't know about.

Musashi was sunk on 24 October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In March of 2015 her wreckage was discovered by a team of scientists employed by Paul Allen. She rests in two large pieces, much like Titanic, nearly 1000 meters below the surface of the Sibuyan Sea.

The high expense of operating Yamato and the growing scarcity of fuel oil meant that the fleet kept her near to the home islands following the loss of the Philippines. However, as the Americans were approaching Okinawa a plan was made to beach her in the shallows on the north of the island and use her as a stationary gun platform. This was a part of what was known as Operation: Ten-Go. Unfortunately for the Japanese the American Military had broken ordinary fleet communication codes in 1942 and so knew that this operation was forthcoming. On 7 April 1945, a day after setting sail from Tokuyama, now Shunan, on the Inland Sea west of Hiroshima, Yamato and her escorts were attacked by dive bombers and torpedo bombers from several carriers. After a battle which lasted for several hours, in which three separate waves of planes attacked her, she sank in 340 meters of water approximately 290 km S.E. of Kyushu. Unlike the Musashi, she is intact on the bottom and sits in an upright position, just as depicted in the anime.

The first third of the omnibus didn't really grab me, but I loved the middle part about the characters feeling lost. The part where Kodai visited the empty and dark Yamato was the best section of the book.

In my copy, it seems that the color pages for chapters 8 and 15 are printed in the wrong place. As far as I can tell, the actual chapters are correct, but that really gave me a pause while I was reading and made me flip through the rest to see if anything else was amiss.

I really hope we get to see more titles like this released in English. I'm getting a little worried since Seven Seas hasn't announced anything new in the hardcover classics line for a while. I'd gladly skip hardcover and get softcover collections (like Dragon Half) instead, as long as older titles still get released every now and then.

If only we could somehow get the Macross 7 Trash manga in English.
