So, in short, this is the entire documentary:
"What is Anime?
Anime is... Action! Sci-fi! Comedy! Martial arts!

Anime is... Straight from Japan! Totally unexpected! Not kids stuff!

Anime is... On right now! 24 hours a day! Log on now and demand your anime on Netflix!"

Yes, Enter the Anime is literally just the old ADV Films trailer that everyone loves to quote in a joking manner, with emphasis on the second part.

I couldn’t watch it all because of the horrendous editing and irritating narrator... It’s basically a one hour advert.

I also enjoyed the Rilakkuma and Kaoru segment where the staff talk about stop-motion animation. I hope we get another season in the future...

Props for actually making it through this thing long enough to review it. I couldn't even get past the ten minute mark. It just felt so gross, from calling those in the industry "deranged," to the shameless self-promotion of their own brand, etc...

So, this is not a documentary of what anime is, but a documentary of what a Netflix original is.
A info commercial about Netflix originals.
Almost nothing there for anime fans.

This just makes me think of that Sailor Moon Dateline special from the 90s that was all about how weird and whacky anime fans are and painted anime toy companies as a threat to the American toy industry.

I hated it as soon as I heard about it, but apparently it's worse than I could have possibly imagined.

Look, I get Netflix made this infomercial as a lazy try on marketing anime for non anime watchers. But the way they did it's more like "enter OUR anime" instead of "enter THE anime".
It looks as if after their american live action adaptation of Death Note they don't even know how to work with anime if it's not an anime-style american show.

So it's the pre-Pokemon Anime advertising. Where Anime is strongly promoted as being edgy and dangerous, which made sense back when they only brought over OVAs. Now it just seems odd given how more diverse peoples tastes are in the west.

There was a good documentary Jonathan Ross made in the early 00s, which featured Anime and other parts of Japanese pop culture called Japanorama.

I loved Japanorama. I sort of wish they would release that again somewhere. it probably could use an update, but I'll take it without one too

At least it isn't as bad as the one BBC reporter telling one of the Girls und Panzer designers to his face that the show he worked on is 2D child porn, despite the actual series being PG at worst.

Especially when Netflix is the one streaming Violet Evergarden, Anohana, and Your Lie in April.

I have to agree with the general sentiment.

This was one of the single most disgustingly produced masturbatory advertisments i've seen.

If anything it's pushing me back into the camp that if this is what netflix thinks of the anime industry and community then maybe it's best that they step out of the game entirely.

My sentiments exactly. And the fact that they have their mitts on Evangelion freezes my blood. God only knows when--or if--we'll ever get a Blu from a proper HD master at this rate.
