I think it's because Gainax was only the animation studio with the main creative staff (director, episode director, character designer...) being responsible for the animation production alongside Group Tac and Korad (from Korea), but the royalties actually belong to the true owners, which would be the producers NHK, Sougo Vision and Toho.

That's entirely possible. I was assuming that Gainax had more involvement than just being an animation contractor, but I must admit that it's been years since I've actually paid attention to the credits! I wonder who is considered the "original creator"?

fudge, they were going to do a second season of Panty and Stocking? Is there any way Trigger could get the rights back because I'm pretty sure Imaishi has a claim to it through GEEKS.

It might of been a joke at the time, but I remember reading somewhere there were suppose to be 6 seasons of Panty and Stocking.

I'm pretty sure that's a joke at the end of the OST.

Well, the only thing I could say is that if Gainax ends up bankrupt and out of business next year, I won't give a damn, seeing how they screwed over Anno for money.

And I hope Maki rots in a nice prison cell.

And as long as Bernard Madoff, too.

This is admittedly just me going off hearsay posted on a variety of various websites, but from what I heard Hiroyuki Imaishi wanted to do a second season that started off exactly where the first one ended, which is to say make a spoiler[wacky road trip series about Brief and Garterbelt trying to put Panty back together after she's been sliced and diced to pieces by Stocking in the original season finale]. Gainax management, meanwhile, only saw the show as a vehicle for peddling cast-off figures and hug pillows, and wanted a second season that was nothing but porny fanservice.

Eventually the relationship between the two sides was completely fouled beyond any point of recovery, and the entire staff left Gainax in order to found Studio Trigger.

So in short, literally the same situation as with Evangelion but with a different production team.

It's noteworthy that the Trigger staff never wanted to disclose the details of why they left Gainax despite making hits like Gurren Lagann (which I think is also safe since it's owned by Aniplex, right?) and Panty & Stocking in their final years there. There's the answer: too much drama and they knew it was a sinking ship,so they just wanted to forget about Gainax and move on with their own works.

Damn, remember when we were excited whenever a new work by Gainax was announced?

This is basically correct. While Gainax company and staff contributed many designs for the show, animated parts of it, wrote a lot, and so on, Gainax didn't own any of it. They managed to end up as a contractor, an arrangement Anno and others have said before was a mistake caused by not knowing how to do business. Instead of owning a part of the show, they were actually indentured to make large parts of it without making money. It was a terrible deal that nearly killed the company, from what several staff have said.

Gainax was forced into other kinds of business to survive. One can speculate if the company ever managed to do any business that wasn't a mistake. Their US operation, General Products, was also a total fiasco and fell apart in a very similar way.

In a sense, Gainax is known both for their jiggly characters and for being really bad at being a company. Nothing really new to it.

I'm kind of surprised to hear about their financial problems before Evangelion though. I don't know much about the success of Gunbuster back then, but my understanding is that Nadia was extremely popular and influential when it came out. I'm surprised they didn't make good money from it. (or perhaps they did, but their costs were out of control?)

Gainax cannot sell the rights to Nadia: Secret of Blue Water because they never had it. NHK owns it, and Gainax was just a work-for-hire.

In fact, Gainax hated so much working under and taking orders from NHK (note: "deserted island" episodes) that soured them on work-for-hire and doubled-down instead towards original works that led to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It would be hard to bring in a fresh vibe at the studio that made it in the past, there was another TV series being planned at Gainax at the time, and the younger generation of staff would continue to hold back on expressing themselves out of deference to me as their senior.

Gurren Lagann? Makes me wonder if these shady business practices are also what caused Imaishi to leave.

Beats me. Haven't found anything regarding this also happening in Imaishi's case. So it's probably worth asking questions about that.
