I would say that while there's a general upward trend of the weirdness the series covers, it's not like every chapter is set up to be more insane than the last. There are plenty of more mundane brothels mixed in with the weirder ones. Assuming that the anime goes up to the end of volume 2, you could argue that the final episode is the most mundane.

Volume 3 though is ... something, yeah. Chapter 30 isn't even explicit, but it's the most hilarious because of the topic it handles. A season 2 would be fun if it ever comes.

Is there a NTR brothel? Not sure how that would work in a brothel, but it is one of the weirder fetishes in Japan. I could see the comedy in whoever had the misfortune of being on the short end of the stick and wrote a particularly salty review. I’d look myself, but I kind of want to be surprised by the details in S1.

That is a true Tolkien attribute, though. Hobbits are halflings, for those who for some reason aren’t familiar with The Lord of the Rings franchise. In that universe, Tolkien indicates they are often mistook as human children and it tends to be a reoccurring theme throughout the series. The halfling race and its characteristics were then borrowed from LotR by most of the popular table top rpgs when they were being created. I’m pretty sure it is intended as part of the subtle rpg humor (like the sexual interests of elves and halfling penis size joke) and lore sprinkled throughout the episodes. I could be wrong, but that’s the way I took it as someone who once played a lot of d&d.

<offtopic>

First of all, it is *not* a reoccurring theme throughout the series. Aragorn mentions it to Eomer once when trying to describe the people he's looking for (Merry and Pippin) to him. Eomer has never seen a Hobbit and they are considered to be mythical creatures to his people. Aragorn was going for a quick and dirty description for a man that's never seen a Hobbit before. However, I seriously doubt that a Man of Bree, who lives in the same town as Hobbits and sees them all the time, would think that they look like children. None of the descriptions Tolkien gives of Hobbits among other Hobbits mentions anything that could be taken as "childlike". In other words, Aragorn was saying that their "stature" makes them appear as children, not their looks.

Note that, from behind, Treebeard at first thought Merry and Pippin might be small orcs, and only because they had nice voices did he not kill them out-of-hand. He did not say that they looked like human children.

No, at least not up to Volume 3. Though NTR isn't really a "Japanese" fetish in the way futa or arguably monster girls are. The West has cuckolding which is almost the same thing, though that fetish often has race-related connotations among other aspects associated that make it even more ... off-putting than the Japanese variant of NTR. spoiler[Such as the male being cheated on sometimes also participating in the sex and consuming the fluids of the other male.]

Wow, they really went all out on this episode (uncensored version). It was basically the softcore porn version of hentai Shocked I don't think I've seen that level of almost hentai since Masou Gakuen HxH, which was already at the peak of what I thought could still be considered not hentai.

No problem with it personally though, just surprised they took it that far. For comparison (for anyone curious), in the manga they stop after meeting their companions and give you the reviews on the next page. So the details on what happened are just their reviews and your own imagination.

As for the guys reaction to Crim, based on their personalities, I say it fits to what we know about them and wouldn't have if they had more politically correct reactions. For them, I think it's less about what you do with your partner as opposed to who your partner is and what they're working with.

Talking about D&D, I wonder if a coincidental joke about halflings meant to be lucky where the halfling guy we follow has been a little unlucky . Such as the tentacled girl and dom halfling woman. Sure he got his pick of fairies, but he was not sure how to think about that.

Well, by doing the review about the faeries, the halfling made public knowledge that his rod is on the petite size (faerie sized), so right there he ran lost any chance to brag about his equipment, so he is out of luck.

@Tuor_of_Gondolin

Let's not forget that due to the sheer size of the printed material consumption in japan, they have their own aesthetics. Here is a link where you can see the japanese version of the D&D rule cyclopedia circa 1994:

It is clear to see that halflings are drawn like little kids (not fat midgets with hairy feet). Lets not forget that Japanese have an habit of recreating cover and interior art of novels more to their liking, here is a recent examplo:

https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/06/18/deathtrap-dungeon-not-entirely-pleased-by-japans-moe-presentation-of-adventure-gamebook

So all in all, in the japanese culture it is not a stretch to say that hobbits/halflings look like kids.

Absolutely true. I just didn't want people thinking the source material actually implies that Hobbits look like children. What D&D or Japan does to it is their own business.

Wow, thanks for sharing that! It's really interesting to see the art style used in those books Smile

Let's just say that when I was around 14 or 15, I *really* liked some of the pictures in those books. Razz More objectively, it's interesting to see how things were done in the early-to-mid 80s compared to now.

I am pretty sure that it does, even if not explicitly so. I concede that the Peter Jackson films could be muddying my memory, so I’m not going to argue it here. This is way off topic anyway.

Cool to see the Japanese D&D books, though. As someone who grew up playing in the golden age of TSR (1st & 2nd edition), I would have loved to have seen them back then. I like the western art of D&D, but I was already being exposed to anime then and really think it would have been fun to draw my characters like that. Anyway, I love that this show is going there with things I thought funny when I played. Like, what age gap means to elves.

Apparently Funimation has silently decided to drop this show and completely remove it from their web site because they didn't actually know what it was: https://twitter.com/HalgoniaKen/status/1223435080158236678

Where does that leave Theron Martin's streaming reviews?

Well, that I wonder...also, its kinda awkward now that the 2020 winter preview banner on the main page at the moment is the series that got pulled, which I assume is for its "content".

Funimation can GF itself. I support their right to make content decisions, but how the hell could they not know? I mean it is right there on the tin in OP/ED.

They licenced it. How could they not know what the show was about? Like, three episodes in they finally realise what the show was about?
