I honestly didn’t know Amazon was streaming it. How does that work? There were certain people really quick to dogpile Funimation as “yet another blunder” and “bending the knee” but I think this shows there’s a problem with this show’s content getting particularly bad bordering on illegal maybe? I keep hearing about loli sex that’s in it and that could be really flirting with disaster that’s just too dangerous for these companies to bother with.

I didn't know that either, but my guess would be that Amazon sublicensed it from Funimation. It mentions that Amazon had dub listings, so presumably Funimation was involved in the process somewhere.

If that is the case, then they might have a bit of an issue since Amazon wouldn't have received something it contracted to get. It's possible Amazon might have agreed that pulling it was correct and nothing will come of it. On the other hand, Amazon removed it after Funimation already decided to cease production of subs and dubs, so it's possible Amazon might see that as a breach on Funimation's end. Either way, I could see it as something that at least makes other streaming platforms more cautious about sublicensing in the future.

I swear, if you ask me, all this bad press from feminists, to streaming services jumping ship, it just garners more attention for the series and makes it more relevant in the news and I love it Laughing

You know I see people going all “those pesky feminists trying to get this pulled” but I honestly didn’t see that much blowback compared to Goblin Slayer, Shield Hero, or even Nekopara. I really don’t think it’s “them” dude.

I'm curious what exactly got this series pulled. As a feminist, I couldn't care less about Interspecies Reviewers because it's not my cup of tea, but it's also upfront about what it is from the getgo. Rolling Eyes

As I mentioned earlier, this series is really not all that bad. Honestly its tamer then shows like High School DxD. People keep calling it softcore, but there is no nudity, but plenty of naughty humor.

You are clearly watching a censored version.

The sex scenes involving characters that look like children are a pretty big reason to cancel it

To people wondering about Amazon, I'm pretty sure it was just Funi listing the series for digital purchase, not streaming with Prime. They do this with all their shows.

Anyways, I really hope Crunchyroll or Hidive will pick this up. Really disappointed in Funimation for all of a sudden coming up with "standards" out of the blue, when they clearly were even expecting an uncensored version (the Funi page for Reviewers was advertised as being uncensored before and several days after the first episode aired, even though that wasn't true). This really sets a bad precedent for Funimation, licensing a show and then taking it down based on some standards that have never been revealed. This obviously wasn't a Sony decision since Wakanim and AnimeLab are still streaming it. I really hope Funi isn't blocking any other service from picking up the North American/UK rights.

That didn't stop Funi from releasing Valkyrie Drive.

To be fair, the censored version is the only officially streamed version. Can't blame someone for not being a pirate.

I can't say I "love" it when this kind of stuff makes the news outside of our little fandom bubble, mostly because it invariably leads to "hey, you're into anime, right? explain what this Interspecies Reviewer show is about?" conversations with coworkers.

Well, obviously, because that doesn't exist in Valkyrie Drive

The most probable reasons it's getting yanked everywhere.

1) Having to age-gate your websites for one series (logistically a nightmare when any other 18+ rated content prior is pretty tame in comparison)
2) Apple is quick to pull any app for pornographic content off their store (this is probably one of the biggest reasons)
3) Sexual activity between characters that are visually similar to children. (morally this actually stopped one of the fan-subbers from editing in the uncensored version and releasing it, it's not a stretch to imagine companies would rather stear clear as well)
4) It's evolved more into actual hentai, and literally no one except Passione could have seen this coming (and Funimation, as a brand, does not sell actual hentai. Amazon Video does not either, last I checked).

Least probable reasons it's getting yanked.

1) The feminists! (Nothing is explicitly misogynist in the series, and sex work is portrayed as consensual)
2) The lgbtqs! (Sex work has been fetishizing lgbtq content forever. If casual conversation in the series was the straw that broke the camels back, I'd frankly be blown away)
3) To make it more popular (renigging on contracts is not good business. And if Funimation want to some how profit from it's newfound popularity, they will most likely have to re-negotiate for the rights to do so)
