From what i've seen it really was the work of Xiao Zhan's fans, or at least some of them, with antis joining in pretending to be part of them. They formed a huge movement to take down any site with LGBT content relating to him, it was trending on a lot of popular chinese forums. And one of the worst things is that all this is that the 'fans' said they got the idea from XZ's management itself, but later on they admited that they never contacted them. The situation now for XZ is pretty dire, The Untamed really blew up on china and him and YiBo became two of the most famous chinese actors after it, and XZ is now receiving a lot of hate, death threats etc. And the thing is, he always supported the LGBT cause and was always the one saying how he completely understood the fact that his character was in a romantic relationship with another man, and never held back on showing that in the drama, of course within the limits of censorship.
In short, it was a huge loss for both sides.

Yikes. Shipping characters is one thing, but shipping real people is kinda creepy not gonna lie. Especially if they're blatantly sexual and fetishy.

Thank you so much for this!! I really thought no one outside of Chinese fan circles would know what really happened, and now I am glad at least some know the really ugly truth. What XiaoZhan fans did are really horrible and devastating to the Chinese fanfic niche circles (which also has some sizable international following). Now they become targets of many Chinese anime and drama circles because how irresponsible and childish their actions are, funny of how they play victims on Twitter. You can’t be a victim of censorship if you try to manipulate the censorship to achieve your selfish goals.

I truly felt sorry for many Chinese doujn and fanfic circles for this mess ( I may not read them but they are an integral part of Asian anime and drama fandom), and judging from Chinese social media, many LGBT Chinese fans were mad of the whole situation as well (you know, the “misrepresentation” stuff)

Fandom can be crazy and extreme, no matter where you live

That stinks for AO3 writers. I'm a fanfic writer myself, but I'm not a member of AO3, I'm a member of fanfiction.net, which can still be read from China... The site tracks what countries where people are reading from and I'm still getting readers from China and Hong Kong (which is listed separately).

I wonder if there's people getting around it though... anything possible nowadays.

Forgive my stupidity if I read wrong.

So mainly this is about shipping real-life people? If so then that's pretty awful..... I'm all for fictional characters but not with anyone IRL. The same goes for BTS and love live (it was so bad that an English facebook page wasn't sorry about shipping the seiyuus together). Poor guy on getting so much hate.

Genuinely surprised that ao3 wasn't blocked in China before this. Ao3 is pretty much a hotbed for slash fiction, and I thought that they'd want to block access to anything with gay content. Maybe the majority of fics being in English made it not worth the effort to block before now?

Well, fanfiction.net doesn't allow rps, and the highest rating that their policy allows is R (or M on the site), whereas AO3 allows NC-17 (Explicit) stories. But the writers are the ones who assign the rating, so they could probably get away with it. I doubt fanfiction.net regularly checks to see if people are conforming to their rating policy anyway.

And unlike AO3, fanfiction.net doesn't have tags, and they are being very subtle about the shipping thing. AO3, on the other hand, has tags for specific sex acts, so...

China has been attempting to block all sorts of porn for forever now, it’s one of the largest segments of the internet blocked by the Great Firewall. This is really nothing new.

Also, read the first post. This is Chinese fans of an idol shooting themselves in the foot because they found RP slash fanfic of their oshi on the site and conspired to get it taken down. The backlash against them right now is immense, especially since the originator of the petition/plan/mass report to the authorities apparently was writing self insert fan fiction of themselves with the idol in question, so a hypocrite to boot.

I do know there are some pretty raw sex scenes in fanfiction.net
I am plenty aware of slash couples( F x F and M x M), I'm just wondering if they allow other kinds of pairings.

Unless it goes agaisnt the rules (Real People aren't allowed and no smut) then it's fair game pairings wise...
