It's also common for even full professors in slightly different fields to attend talks and ask questions exactly like that "I'm not in this field, but does this exist and is it useful?" John Hubbard at Cornell did that all the time to grad students, professors, and visitors giving talks. Still does, most likely. The whole scene was actually pretty realistic.

In episode eleven I enjoyed the variation on the PMS joke.
