The prosecution is seeking a prison sentence of one year and six months, but the defense is asking for a suspended sentence, arguing that the defendant had received punishment in society such as the cancellation of his manga series.

The manga being cancelled is just a matter of course, not a punishment. The victim/s(he possibly committed that other assault, too) are not going to just forgot this, and likely carry it with them for life. He said "that there is no way to apologize for what he did to the victim.", after giving a bunch of excuses trying to explain his behavior. He needs to serve some time, at the least.

Also, can we go one thread without making it about -other- WSJ mangaka incidents? Like, we know the details of those, and they don't have much to do with this case, which WSJ has honestly been dealing with well.

I’m frustrated by such a low sentence, but I’m more frustrated that there’s no mention of something like mandatory therapy being conditional for his release. Not that therapy would “fix” his attractions, but it might at least provide an avenue for him to learn to be in control of those urges and not act on them, to say nothing of his “complex surrounding women”, which sounds very heavily based in some misogynistic tendencies. Every time I hear that phrase, it puts me in mind of “women are the problem because they won’t love unlovable me” incel-esque nonsense.

Tangential note, the maximum sentence for child prostitution under Act No. 52 of 1999 is apparently five years, less than the maximum sentence for "indecency through compulsion".

I don't think he did it because he couldn't control his urges. I think he just didn't want to.

As for his "complex"... urgh. I still don't understand how someone like this could've written the Double Cast arc. What is this mindset? "Men mistreat and betray young women they have power over all the time, and I'm gonna prove it"? Some BoJack-Horseman-esque desire to validate his own self-image as an abuser-in-waiting?

Eighteen months is already on the low end. The penalty prescribed by Article 176, which I believe is the appropriate statute, is "not less than 6 months but not more than 10 years".

Article 176 is about forcible Indecency, which is far more severe than just groping.

but from the article, I think 18 months is a good enough sentence judging from the charge of touching on the breast 2 girls, while yes it's gross and all, it's not as much of a sexual assault as raping someone, and I agree that having your manga cancelled + your name know as a possibly sexual predator is bad enough to already have problem finding another job.

That's the whole point of of the justice system: a punishment fitting the crime. 18 months is perfectly reasonable for 2 cases of groping.. The people actually asking for death penalty or a life sentence are being ridiculous.

I'm not really a proponent of retributive justice, so I agree with pretty much all of this. Japan has one of the most effective rehabilitation rates regarding prison in the world (arguably because even short prison time is REALLY harsh, but also because they do a lot of behavioral training). When people get a slap on the wrist, they don't exactly learn their lesson, especially one so deeply embedded in their worldview.
Regardless, whatever happens to this idiot, I just hope he doesn't do anything again.

Dont be surprised. Shimabukuro, Mitsutoshi got caught paying a minor to have sex with him, and while his current manga got cancelled, his sentence was suspended and he was free to go. Years later he goes on to write Toriko, and publish it in Weekly Shounen jump, the same manga that cancelled his previous series.

Its almost like the people in charge of WSJ dont actually have a big problem with hiring pedos.

I'm not here to defend any kind of sex crime, but in a society where child porn just recently become illegal and "junior idol" stuff is still legal, hiring a 16-year-old prostitute who may have lied about her age is a very minor offense. This culture will take years, if not decades to correct as Japan sort-of catches up with the rest of the world (though I am hopeful it doesn't affect fiction and is simply better justice against actual sexual predators). They need to treat these crimes like they currently do any kind of drug use.

The NHK article cited by this piece as a source says he's being tried for 強制わいせつ. The same language has been used by reports going back to the arrest.

I mean, I don't know what the typical variations are in sentencing for different degrees of offense, but that does seem to be the charge.

Are we really holding the legal system that gave a rapist 3 months in jail as the standards other countries should strive to attain? I mean, people are evenly currently petitioning for the removal of the sex offender list while some states are easing punishments on pedophiles. We're in no position to be throwing these rocks in this glass house of ours.

Only eighteen months? Pathetic, justice systems are [expletive] jokes when it comes to monsters like him. Something I don't get also; if a rabid animal attacked/bit a kid, they'd put that animal down, but when it comes to aberrations like him, he just gets a slap on the wrist even though he's ruined that girl's life possibly forever?

He claims that he had "worries/anxieties", which is a load of bull. I've got anxiety at times too, suffered it in my high school years, and stuff like that doesn't make you go prey on teenagers, and his "complex" towards women, it's obvious what it is: he thinks that all girls and women, no matter their age, are just living toys for him to play with. Evil or Very Mad

I wish nothing but the worst for him.

Seriously??? All of those pedo-protector people deserve to get shamed and called out for their lack of intelligence, decency, morality (if that even exists) and common sense.

They didn't say "the United States", assuming you're referencing Brock Turner, and our posters here do come from outside the U.S.

Also the argument of citizen A can't criticize country B because country A is screwed up too just means no one advocates for anyone. The judge on Turner's case was shady af and people have since gone to great lengths to make sure that Turner's conviction isn't forgotten despite the measly sentence he got for a disgusting crime.

Who, exactly, do you think benefits from "mind your own business" when it comes to sexual assault?

18 months may not be enough but I'd prefer he get that then the good behavior allowance. At least this way it'll keep him off the streets (and off his bike) for a year and a half.

Him saying he has a complex against women doesn't really help his case, as it just makes it sound like he'll do it again unless he can get some mental help.
Most people in the world harbor anxieties and worries and find it hard to talk about it. They don't jump on a bike and grope random school girls. Not really sure how harassing teenagers will make your anxieties go away but whatever...

Whether he walks away a free man or not, he as a writer will probably get blacklisted.

Though the law apparently regarding his crimes as worse probably doesn't help his case either.
