I also have to wonder if questionable content like this is acceptable over in Japan, and if they are aware of the social and political climate the West are in to release such a show.

According to the producer for Shield Hero in a Reddit AMA, this kind of stuff is never controversial or causes issues in Japan. Which isn't surprising considering there's tons of actual hentai OVAs that are made in Japan with far more graphic content. If those don't bother anyone, then series that aren't even classified as pornography shouldn't raise any concern.

I think you might be putting words in the guy's mouth. Iirc, he said he had heard of no controversy regarding shield hero. That's not the same as saying "this kind of stuff is never controversial or causes issues in Japan" especially when one series is nowhere near as graphic as the other.

I wouldn't be. If they could stream Qwaser, they could stream this.

From what I remember that's basically just a boobs show, right? There isn't really a hardcore violence aspect to it too. spoiler[Sexual violence is pervasive in this] So I really wouldn't compare the two.

Qwaser was more than just a boob show. Breast-sucking is a core theme in it (the male lead and at least one other character can empower themselves by drinking magical milk from girls' breasts, you see - yeah, the less you think about the logic behind it, the better) and there are some pretty strong S&M elements. At its time, it was one of the biggest boundary-pushers for fan service anime. No sexual violence that I can recall, though.

Perhaps not to the exact degree of Redo of Healer's potential, but Qwaser has quite a bit of sexual violence of it's own. The cold opener of the first episode is a high school school girl being raped and murdered by the villain who's in a room full of nude, schoolgirl corpses they collected. There's quite a lot of rape and attempted rape scenes in the show. And most of the groping and frotage in the show is non-consensual. There's definitely comedic bits and some of the assault is played for laughs, but a lot of it is also played straight like spoiler[a character's backstory of being raised in a Church as a kid when Croatian terrorists raided their church andd raped and murdered all the nuns there as they were forced to watch and do nothing]

Qwaser was never simulcasted though. It came out before the simulcast boom. Even if no company decides to touch Redo, I'm sure it'll get fansubbed if nothing else.

Which is funny, because there were plenty of people trying to get Shield Hero and Interspecies Reviewers banned in Japan. Maybe he was genuinely ignorant of that, maybe he was in denial / willfully ignorant, or maybe he was lying.

As you point out, actual hentai treats similar content far more graphically. But the fact that it's hentai is part of why it gets more of a pass. It's not on TV, it's can't be sold to minors, (obviously minors do consume it, but...)

The concept of Redo of Healer is much more disturbing than Shield Hero or Interspecies Reviewers (the later of which didn't bother me at all because everything was consensual... but it did bother a lot of people inside and outside Japan); I'm pretty positive that it will end up being quite controversial and divisive.

Yhea, he is right.
I don't know about any controversy about Shield Hero in Japan. I know plenty of people in the Japanese anime community and all of them were astounded why there was controversy about the show because they didn't hear any controversy about it in Japan. Only after the controversy explode in English sites they started to know about it but didn't understand the reason why the controversy because the story was fiction.

Maybe some on the usual suspects like "BPO" raised something that i din't know about but for the most part the show din't raised any concerns in Japan. Well most Japanese don't even know most late night anime shows, only otaku or TV watchdogs care about what pass that late.
Even outside the English speaking world there were almost no controversy and the anime was well received. Many people know about the novel and were very happy it got an anime.
Only on mostly American and other English speaking sites was controversy.

Redo of the Healer been controversial in Japan will probably depend on how explicit the scenes going to be, but with they doing 2 versions, they will avoid the problems of Interspecies Reviewers.

Redo of the Healer is not really one of the best novels out there. But I'm curious to see how they are going to handle the edginess of this novel. Maybe this will open the door to more anime of titles like Parallel Paradise or Himekishi ga Classmate!.
After all Isekai Meikyū de Harem o got an anime just a few weeks ago.

Of course this anime is not for everyone, but there are plenty of people that like this stories. For the people that don't like this stories, there are plenty of other anime out there so they can avoid this anime they don't like.

I think anime is definitely becoming more open to edginess. I never would have imagined this or Isekai Meikyuu de Harem wo would get an anime but both of them are. I think Himekishi ga Classmate, Kujibiki Tokushou, and Skill Taker all have a chance to get anime now too which is pretty interesting.

While I didn't forget that aspect, re-reading it now I suppose calling it basically just a boob show is too light of a description Laughing

Now that side of it I had forgotten... -_-;

Nah, anime has always been dark and edgy. It's just anime in the west has always had a huge filter put in front of it since most people grew up with heavily censored dubs of kids anime on TV. Meanwhile Japan was consuming numerous series by "Kill 'em All" Yoshiyuki Tomino and "Ultra Violent Edgelord" Go Nagai since the 1960s like Ideon and Violence Jack. Razz Nothing in Redo of Healer is really new or original if we're being honest. And it's not like it's a super obscure series that flew under the radar either. 800K+ sales after a couple years on the market isn't bad for a LN. It's clearly got a fanbase so an anime was inevitable.
