Oh God, yes please on the pix! It shocks me not at all that the show had a longer than normal production period... there is no way you could get visuals that consistently spectacular without sufficient time. The fact that there are only two box sets strikes me as a bit odd, however. Normally, that only happens when sales expectations are low. For a 13-episode show, it would have been easy to have four single volumes.

By the way, you clearly have a very good friend if they were willing to splurge on a Japanese boxset for you...

They certainly exceed my expectations as a friend at every opportunity. lol
Yeah, I can't complain about the box sets, since they are much nicer than singles releases would be, but it is interesting to see them go that route. And it seems like more shows have been doing that lately in general. I guess changes in the market can be credited/blamed.
Anyway, here!

Wooow Blood this sounds serious. You spend over $185 monthly which means $2220 each year.
Let's say you grow your collection for 5 years, you have a value of $11100.
Have you thought about insuring your collection? What if it gets stolen? It has a real value.
I am wondering if home emergency covers are the answer. I'll ask my provider Very Happy https://www.startrescue.co.uk/home-emergency-cover

@robertm

Blood- is not currently posting so I'll try to answer your questions.

His $185 in one month is not actually a lot of money for anime expenses. He has spent less and considerably more in past months. To get a better idea of his expenses and mine go back one page to see our summaries for 2017 and totals for previous years. Earlier pages will show others expenses as well.

Anime and anime related merchandise does not generally have much in the way of resale value. There are some shows, mostly due to age or rarity that have value because they are not available at reasonable amounts. Unfortunately that does not apply to most shows. Even those that are scarce lose the value if they are reissued.

In order to insure a collection you would have to catalog it and arrange for appraisals. In most cases it is simply not worth the effort. If anyone here has insurance on their anime collection they haven't mentioned it.

Note: stealing Blood-'s or my anime collections would require a fairly large truck.

I spent more money on anime in 2017 than any other year.

QTR 1: $655.18
QTR: 2: $1078.10
QTR 3: $1598.86
QTR 4: $925.24

TOTAL (anime): $4257.38
TOTAL (manga): $87.90

Shipping: $131.21
Sales Tax: $10.51

GRAND TOTAL: $4487

I finally invested in a region-free Blu-Ray player in May last year and I've imported a few shows unavailable in North America (Monster, a Silent Voice, et al). This is the reason for the high shipping costs. Honestly, though, shipping for me is high even without importing because of my location. The first and only other time I broke the $4000 mark was in 2008. I think I was making up for four years of buying very little. I have long stretches of when I lose interest in anime, but I always seem to come back eventually.

2013: $474.84
2014: $421.89
2015: $509.76
2016: $403.87

That's an average of only $450 for four years.

I don't think I'll spend as much this year, but I should break $2000 which has been the average for me prior to 2013.

2018 (so far)
QTR 1: $303.03
QTR 2: $700.65 (so far)

Decided to bring this back, as I was curious over how much I spent over the past six months to replenish my anime collection and fill up my shelves. Let's see:

July 2020
Kino's Journey (2003) and Dennoh Coil (full series) - $37.98
Night on the Galactic Railroad - $12.83
Kurau: Phantom Memory - $16.04
Total: $66.85

August 2020
Simoun - $21.35
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water - $43.85
Infinite Ryvius - $34.78
Rumbling Hearts - $8.66
Fate/Stay Night (2006) - $13.70
Arjuna - $22.26
Garden of Sinners (DVD set) - $126.14
Total: $270.74

September 2020
Requiem from the Darkness - $20.97
Noein - $17.12
Martian Successor Nadesico - $19.23
Shigofumi - $10.69
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Mysterious Girlfriend X - $32.46
Total: $100.47

October 2020
Kimagure Orange Road TV - $56.22
Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning - $22.73
R.O.D. The TV - $57.78
Read or Die OVA - $25.68
Black Lagoon (both TV seasons) - $29.96
Revolutionary Girl Utena TV - $59.83
Utena Movie - $13.91
Total: $266.11

November 2020
Detroit Metal City - $28.89
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit - $11.76
Time of Eve - $39.58
Azumanga Daioh - $42.80
Outlaw Star - $21.39
Eureka Seven - $28.81
O Maidens in Your Savage Season - $28.89
Total: $202.12

December 2020
Patlabor: The Movie - $12.45
Now and Then, Here and There - $32.10
Interviews with Monster Girls - $22.07
Mushishi - $25.27
Kimagure Orange Road: Want to Return to That Day - $10.70
School Rumble (both TV seasons and OVA) - $0.49 (blew an Amazon gift card to cover nearly full cost of both)
Total: $103.08

January 2021
My-Hime: $17.38

Grand Total of Collection Filling: $1,026.75

Not too bad on spending for replenishing my collection. Had tried to get thrifty where I could, but did get tempted to snag some more costlier stuff at points (particularly the old AoA Garden of Sinners set). But was able to make the best of things where I could.

I've finally done it. I finally got my Anime Purchases spreadsheet to be formatted as I wish, and I retroactively added all of the anime and manga I've purchased since 2010. 'Twas a lot of work these past few months, but I got it done.

Here's the total amount I've spent between 2010 and 2021.

Here's the total I've spent for each company.

And this is how much the Rightstuf membership has saved me each year. You can clearly see how much the reduction from 10% to 5% in savings (plus the membership increase to $18) has affected profits. I also tend to buy more manga than anime nowadays, which has a pretty big impact since it's the anime I buy that ends up justifying the cost. I've told myself that as long as I continue to make my money back I'll continue to buy the membership.

Impressive work, Crisha! I should have outsourced my purchase tracking/totalling to you. I finally gave up tracking stuff last year because I just couldn't be chuffed any more. Also, my purchasing has been very under control for the last several years so tracking it isn't as "fun."

Thank you! Yes, I am one of those strange people that enjoys making spreadsheets. If you wanted to take a closer look at it, it's located here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V0yWzEJtFxm9Bb2LmuNvMjQANjoeUQTEk64q0ZPK3sU/edit?usp=sharing

Each year is where the individual expenses go. The blue column is the total amount I paid. The purple columns are other payment methods (i.e. gift cards, Discover Rewards Points, items received as Christmas Gifts). The yellow columns are the money saved from sales. The green columns are the money saved by memberships. Each expense may be broken down into multiple classifications. For example, rows 12 and 13 cover the cost of RWBY: Volume 3 bluray, showing how much the tax was and how much the series was.

The Tag sheet is where I can search for tags I added to each expense. For example, I attach the "Lez" tag for anything that's lesbian themed. The image below shows all the money I've spent on lesbian-themed items.

The Company sheet summarizes everything by Company. The RS sheet contains all of the Rightstuf purchases sorted by Order Date. I need the separate RS sheet in order to calculate the amounts saved by the sales and membership.

Creating these spreadsheets has been fun, but also very tedious, and it's taken 12 years to get to the point where I'm satisfied with how they're structured and organized. More than likely, I probably won't be continually updating my 2022 expenses until I become inspired again.

the previous posts made me wonder how much have I been spending on my hobby over the years. I was surprised at my expenditures. It took much digging through my e-mails to get a fairly accurate total per year and from which places. This does not include things I have picked up at Brick and morter stores as I have no way to go get past purchases.

2021: Amazon;$1190 ,Right Stuf;$3,083 ,section23/sentai website;$440: Total, $4713
2020: Amazon; $667 , Right Stuf; $1260 , Sentai; $65; Second Spin; $393: Total, $2385

2018: Amazon; $200 , Sentai; $784 , Second spin; $110: Total, $1084
2017: Amazon; $479, Right Stuf; $366; Sentai; $327, Second Spin; $582: Total, $1754

2010: Amazon; $1375, Right Stuf; $3016, Second Spin;$382, Hastings; $200: Deep Discount; $181: Total $5154
2009: Amazon; $505, Right Stuf; $3323, Second Spin; $776: Anime Nation; $285, Deep Discount; $21; Borders; $26: Total $4936

Haven't done this with my current purchases in quite some time. But guess I'll have fun with it:

Clockwork Planet and Fuuka Essentials sets - $45.26
Akudama Drive - $33.52
Infinite Dendrogram - $40.85
Release the Spyce - $29.23

January 2022 Total: $148.86

At least in recent years as far as purchases go, been trying to go for titles of interest at the lowest cost I can get, mostly between E-Bay and Amazon. Will be interesting to see how things go throughout this year.

Purchases for February:

Hanasakeru Seishonen - $51.02
Afterlost: $23.49
Asteroid in Love: $33.74
Adachi and Shimamura: $53.70

February 2022 Total: $161.95
2022 Total So Far: $310.81

Spent a little more than last month, though Belle's a pre-order for now until May. Beyond that, see what March has to bring in for me.
