Yeah... I'm not sure why this was made to look like an attack on anime or something, and ANN had to know what the reaction would be like. The actual notice from ebay (linked at the bottom of this article) has only one line about anime; this is mainly about regular old porn and smut mags.
Since hentai is a thing that exists, it makes sense they'd mention it, but it's not being singled out or misrepresented. And, well, Rightstuf still sells and openly promotes that stuff regularly. Who buys hentai on ebay, anyway? |
There is a lot of hentai that is not avaible anymore from the company that put it out.Just like regular anime. So there is a secondary market for adult and non adult anime on the secondary market.

Ebay was the place to import long out of print doujinshi, eroge, vhs/dvd's etc for years so it's a habit that dies hard. Also this "expanding to global market" has me raising an eyebrow.

Doesn't eBay have a tool where you can block such & such country to prevent your items from being sold or bidded on?

As others have said there is hentai, erotica, manga, doujins that are out of print and are difficult to find. Rightstuff does not have everything though they have a good selection they do not have a lot of vintage stuff.
To people who enjoy or collect these kinds of things it is a travesty because now it makes it much more harder to find and would be a lot more expensive. If you ever had to look online for something that is a rarity or out of print you understand why this is concerning.

Looks like LiveJournal market groups will make a resurgence soon, eh. That's how I bought some of my old Yaoi doujinshi was through LJ sale posts and the (very unstable and hackable) PayPal of the day.
There used to be a LiveJournal for EVERYTHING. Every anime community and sub-community had a LiveJournal and people sold their things on these communities but they all seemed to port over to other sites and then just die off.
But yea...I suppose this change shoots the idea of my selling some of my older Doujin off then.
The bad thing is "yaoi" (the term) became a generalized term for English as just BL manga in the US.
I have a very bad feeling that ebay is going to end of flagging a lot of things they just have zero idea wtf they're flagging; and I think it's really crappy that they still allow PORN SPREDS (Sports Illus.) to be sold but not other things. If they're going to ban the content, they need to ban ALL the adult content not just pick and choose.

So one minority party backbencher in state government and another member of the equivalent minority party in federal parliament equals Australia being full of "anime hating political tyrants"? Both of them are ineffectual dopes who haven't spoken on the topic for over a year now.

The question is if it is possible to circumvent their ban and just sell teh Hentai under a different name so that their bots do not automatically delete it.

I found it really bizarre that they still allowed things like Playboy and Penthouse, if you are going to ban adult products those things don't get some kind of special treatment. The main demographic for Playboy and Penthouse is 18 plus. They fall under the same guidelines as adult games, anime and manga.

Wouldn’t their wording "items showing sexual activity, sexual content or sexually suggestive poses" technically cover things like Game of Thrones box sets? Or do they mean that sentence only to apply to things like the listing photos?

I ain't gonna lie, the headline is kind of bait-y, so I see where the knee-jerk responses are coming from.
If it said "Explicit Adult content, including Anime, manga, etc" then that may help?
I dunno...either way I think that maybe they are getting rid of it cause they don't want to manage it anymore, whether it be a logistical issue or liability.
Too bad. I do remember that you had to opt in for view it. Oh well.

Note eBay's own notice states "adult anime/manga that include sexually-explicit content, or nudity" will be forbidden.
OK so Ranma 1/2, aimed at younger readers, with it's occasional nudity is safe, Lone Wolf and Cub, aimed at adults, with it's occasional nudity, sex and rape may not be.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Hopefully people will post when specific works are banned to keep the discussion going.

Yes. Nudity would also remove the movie Titanic (nude scene), the old 1980's Highlander movies (sex scenes), and a lot of Romance movies. It also means that Erotica, as in "Romance Novels" fall under this same category (face it, those are just written porn).
As for Anime/Manga: Berserk would be banned outright due to its content, nudity, poses. A lot of BL content as a whole has suggestive poses. Borderline fan service scenes in anime would also fall under a lot of this category.
... and though the movie is even on Amazon, Belledona of Sadness has suggestive poses and would be banned from buy/sell on Ebay.
The phrasing is WAY too broad. If they wanted to ban dedicated pornography is one thing but... heck my favorite Hentai manga is one called Princess of Darkness which I, truly, love due to its meek-mousy BDSM becomes super-heroine due to dark magic story.
Oh and their is LEGIT pornography on Archive-org as well due to the history behind said film... but a copy of the film (if found) would be banned, even for legit collectors on Ebay...? Even though its history and animation history.
Ebay will lose a lot of business and if I knew how to set auction sites up, I would go off and do it right now and make one dedicated to anime/manga collectibles like this... as I have a bad feeling they're going to flag wayyy too much.

When you start going "Look! Those places banned raunchy material! We should be worried about them banning not-raunchy material!"... Yeah, no. That's exactly the type of unwarranted handwaving freak out-ery I'm talking about. |
If you want to call me Chicken Little over the worst-case scenario I presented, that's fair enough. But in your clear and level-headed understanding of the new policies, do you think that the raunchy-but-not-adult anime I listed above (e.g. Qwaser, DxD, Queen's Blade, Interspecies Reviewers" would qualify as "items showing sexual activity, sexual content or sexually suggestive poses," or not? Simple yes or no question.
EDIT: The newly-added clarifications would certainly seem to apply to plenty of non-pornographic anime:
Quote: | The company defines nudity as "showing any part of male or female genitalia, anus, or female breasts where the areola or nipple is visible;" "modeled clothing that is see-through or very tight and shows human genitalia, the anus, or the nipple/areola of female breasts;" "male erections, even if the model is clothed;" and "people engaged in sexual contact or activity." |

Someone had mentioned that this move may be because of PayPal restrictions on adult content, but I'm not entirely sure as I haven't checked PayPal's policy.
However, it does make more sense considering that PayPal is the main source of payments for the site, and it would be better than finding another service due to their long term business relationship.
