That's so sad to hear! I wish him a speedy recovery! Since he's part of the ensemble, I wonder if they even have someone who could fill in for him.
When TouMyu's latest performance had a main cast injury (thankfully nothing too serious), an understudy, who was also part of the ensemble, took over and then another member took over that understudy's role. For the live portion of the show, he could still perform in a way that wouldn't put stress on the injury, but if needed, they had performers who could stand in for him. I believe he spoke/sang off stage.

Hopefully they have a quick and easy recovery, but don't they usually have understudies for this type of thing? Or is that not done in Japan?

They do have understudies (or at least should), but this actor in particular is part of the ensemble. Usually an understudy is part of the ensemble so it's possible they may not have someone else to fill in for him. I couldn't say for certain, but that's my guess.
