I did not let our Canada Day holiday on Friday halt the process of improving my collection. Bought used:

.hack//Roots (six volumes with the nice art box) - $60 CAD
.hack//Sign (which replaces the bootleg version I unwittingly bought years ago) - $20 CAD
.hack//Legend of Twilight (a double dip since I already had the three volumes, but this is the Anime Legends single collection) - $20 CAD
School Rumble tin case with volume 1 - $50 CAD (this is now used to house my versions of Season 1, the two parts of season 2 and the ova volume).

I'm trying to keep my powder dry for Anime North in a few weeks, but if something tempting pops up, I may not have a choice...

Both the LN and manga for Cross Dressing Villainess Sylvie
Yokohoma Shopping Log Onmibus vol. 1

Birthday Sale:
Rainbow Days-This actually wasn't part of the sale, but it was only $20 so why not?

From Sentai's latest "please take our crap" (and maybe get something of worth) sale...

If you haven't checked, there are even more dollar sets than I bought- some are definitely barrel -scrappers
I initially had 20 items but realized a couple higher priced sets weren't worth it for me yet (might as well stream) and I also deleted some more $4 and dollar ones when I realized that I either didn't really like them or maybe weren't worth taking shelf space for blind buys.

...You can get All of Space Brothers (minus Zero) on DVD for $8

But what I actually got...

The ones I came for (actually over $10):
Hidamari Sketch: Graduation OVA Collection Blu-ray
Natsu no Arashi! Complete Collection Blu-ray

The rest are honestly as disposable to me as the price suggests, but are all the type of easy watches I like if I happen to be stuck in bed or reeeeeally not wanting something to challenge me....

$4:
Bakuon!! Complete Collection

$1 DVD's... just take them please!:
Girls Beyond the Wasteland Complete Collection
HaNaYaMaTa Complete Collection
Hello!! KINMOZA! Complete Collection
Locodol Complete Collection
Nobunaga the Fool Collections 1 & 2
Wakaba*Girl Complete Collection

I almost got this, for $14- I enjoyed watching it weekly at the time. If it were dubbed (I don't think it is) it would be a perfect show for like tween girls that (probably) wouldn't offend anyone.

Thank you, Spastic Minnow! I've always assumed Sentai didn't ship to Canada so I've never really looked into their online store. When I saw the outrageous deals you mentioned, I decided to check it out, just to be sure, and lo and behold they DO ship to Canada - and for a very reasonable price!

Wizard Barristers Complete Collection - DVD 1 $ 1.00
RIN-NE 3 Complete Collection - DVD 1 $ 1.00
RIN-NE 2 Complete Collection - DVD 1 $ 1.00
Hayate the Combat Butler: Heaven is a Place on Earth - DVD 1 $ 1.00
Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You Complete Collection - DVD 1 $1.00
Fantasista Doll Complete Collection - DVD 1 $ 1.00
Argevollen Collection 2 - Blu-ray 1 $ 7.00
Argevollen Collection 1 - Blu-ray 1 $ 4.00
A Spirit of the Sun - Blu-ray 1 $ 4.00

Subtotal: $ 21.00
Shipping (Asendia International Mail [avg 14-30 days]): $ 22.74
Total: $ 43.74 USD

Even exchanging USD into Canadian pesos, I'm making out like a bandido!

From Sentai's downright ridiculous, "we're losing money on this stuff, just take it out of our warehouse please!" sale:

Normal-esque sale prices:

Girlish Number BD
Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? S1 BD
Is it Wrong to Expect a Hot Spring in a Dungeon? BD
Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? Sword Oratoria BD
Triage X BD
The World is Still Beautiful BD

$1 Items:

Argevollen Parts 1-2 DVD
Fantasista Doll DVD
Locodol DVD
Matoi the Sacred Slayer DVD
Momokuri DVD
Wakaba Girl DVD
Wake Up Girls! Movie+TV DVD
Wish Upon the Pleiades DVD

I was worried that S1 of Is it Wrong...? had gone OOP, so I was glad to see it return to Sentai's store. Most of the $1 items are blind buys, except Momokuri, Wakaba Girl, and Wake Up Girls. A lot of slice of life shows are getting the ultimate clearance treatment in the sale, though special mention goes to S1 of Hayate the Combat Butler (DVD) for being 98.7% off MSRP, perhaps the biggest primary-market discount I've ever seen.

Grrr, grrr, I made my Sentai order several days ago when Argevollen Parts 1-2 DVD cost me $11 total instead of $2! See, it never pays to move too fast.

To be honest, I AM surprised they still have any DVD stock, because they apparently completely stopped pressing any of it YEARS ago. And it's not like their previous sales haven't been good.

they really should should invite some liquidation buyer to just buy it all- send it all to Dollar Tree or something.

According to your post above, you paid up for the BD's instead of choosing the DVDs

Ah, right you are! Okay, that makes me feel a little better. Shoulda gone with the DVDs, mind you. Argevollen wasn't one of those visually stunning treats that require the Blu-ray treatment.

@Blood-

My basic take is that if a show is not worth buying on Blu-ray, I'm not into it enough to buy it at all. If a show I have on DVD comes out on Blu-ray and I am reluctant to replace it, it makes me question if I need the show at all. My anime purchases are way down as I've gotten rather picky.

My general philosophy is that if there isn't an outrageous difference in price, I will go with Blu-ray over DVD except in cases where the visuals don't matter. Would I ever sully my eyes with a Made in Abyss DVD over a Blu-ray? Of course not. But if I really like a show and I know that it doesn't require the yummiest visual treatment available, I'm fine with DVD. Like with Rin-ne. I quite like the show but it certainly doesn't rise and fall on its visuals.

I'm all about story and likeable characters. I really don't notice the quality of visuals (or of animation) as long as it passes a threshold level of "adequate". Every once in a long while, superb background art will attract my attention, such as in the El Hazard OVA. If the art work is bad enough to attract my attention, I will not be buying the show in any case.

One of my pet dislikes is cartoony character designs. As such, I have no interest in any of Tezuka's work. I can't handle the dissonance between serious themes and Mikey Mouse looking characters. (I also dislike bad endings and three hanky weepers. Made in Abyss is out on all counts).

I used to have to buy to try, which is why I have a number of shows on DVD that I will not replace. Now with legal streaming along with the reviews here on ANN, I can avoid a lot of that stuff.
