I never took time to watch Conan. Do you think I should give it a try?

It depends on what you like but if you don't mind a slow moving main plot and a huge cast I would recommend it. The cases are still entertaining and you get attached to the characters.
Half of the anime is filler so there's also the question of whether you want to watch those or not. I don't think they're bad but I can understand not wanting to watch them.
I've read some of the manga and it's great too.

So Conan finally passed Naruto, eh?

The manga is very good...but you definitely need patience to read it. The story moves at a snail pace.

I dunno about that. Conan isn't really something you read for the "main plot," such as it is -- you read it for the characters and cases. The whole BO thing should be a secondary concern. If that's what you're coming to the series for, you're gonna be disappointed by the vast majority of the media.

Absolutely not. The series is insanely long and has a great deal of filler. You'd be much better off reading the manga -- which you absolutely should do! -- and limiting your anime exposure to just the movies, and/or selective episodes (EG just the adaptations of your favorite cases).

It's like OP: the difference in time commitment make the costs of the one far, far greater than the other.

There are ways to more easily make the conan anime manageable unlike how you have to watch the fan edit that has a funny parody name that restores the "pace" of the manga to the anime.

But I will say that unless you really really prefer anime to manga you are better off just reading the manga. even if you try and skip the filler episodes the anime doesn't always do a good job adapting the manga
