Episode 1
Because I'm a horrible person, I did chuckle when Konoha said, "Oh, a dead ninja" and kicked Satoko in the gut after seeing her lying in the alley. That's just the kind of cerebral humour that tickles my funny bone. The show certain trades in dark humour, killing off two female characters like it's no big deal and turning them into leaves. I'm up for checking out some more. |

I think those female characters will be back next episode. I think this is one of those shows in which characters die every episode and come back next episode like nothing happened.

I wondered about that myself. I certainly hope you are right.

Yeah it is going to be like Kenny from South Park back in the day.

The first episode did not click with me. Dark humor is really hit or miss and at the end I just felt no desire to see more.

I was surprised by how much this anime was like an American cartoon where the humor comes from a bunch of wacky characters indulging in mildly to not so mildly sociopathic or self-centered behavior while absurd things keep happening to them at a pace rapid enough to keep an attention span deprived audience invovled. This can vary in degree from - I'll use shows that I've liked for much of their run - Bob's Burgers to Archer to Southpark.
When its genuinely clever, this approach can work, but I personally don't form much in the way of attachment to the characters, so the cartoon has to stay constantly funny or die, I like the characters of Bob's Burgers, but if the characters from Archer (I'm not sure which season I dropped it) or Southpark (which I've watched sporadically) all died, I could conceivably find it amusing and fitting and not waste much time on regret. Nor would I be surprised at the inevitable sequel. Well, I'd hope Lana survived. More often than not, this approach winds up being kind of annoying as a bunch of morons confuse being random with being clever and don't season the cheap laughs with enough irony. There's a reason I prefer anime to animation per se. In episode of this show, I thought the approach worked pretty well. I got some genuine, unforced chuckles out of it - I think my favorite moment was when the ninja was running down the street with the assassin's lunch, and those little school kids were running alongside her making fun of her for not running like a ninja. Not because I'm a coal-hearted meanie, of course, but because it caught me off guard being so random and all. Most of the legit snorts and giggle were like that, and like I said, there was a fair share of them, most of them involving the assassin being completely ruthless or the ninja being goofy. I don't know if they'll be able to maintain that element of surprise and shock value over 12 to 13 episodes, but I'm willing to give them a chance. Edited twice to try to resolve a weird spacing issue. |

The way the assassin kills people between cut scenes kind of makes it more suspenseful in a way. The whole time the leader of the escapee ninjas was talking to Satoko, I kept waiting for there to be a flash and then a scene of her fountaining blood. And I didn't want that to happen, because even if the escapee leader did use the others as meat shields, I liked her alright.
Another odd effect was the flashback at the end, where we get to see the 3 ninjas who have been killed laughing and having a girls night out. Or in, I guess. It kind of reminded me of that scene in Austin Powers 2 where Austin Powers kills one of many disposable henchmen in a standard action scene, and then the movie starts going back in time, retracing the henchman's life, revealing friends, job woes and satisfactions, a wife and kid....it's funny and still a little poignant even though its satirical. The show didn't come out of a cookie cutter mold, I'll say that for it. Or if it did, it's a cookie design that I'm not familiar with. Still on board. |

I keep thinking that at some point, the corpse to leaves jutsu is going to come undone, and the city will suddenly be littered with dead bodies. It's just too convenient, and she's such a klutz at every other ninja thing that there's got to be a catch.

So far Satoko has proven to be such an awful ninja, why does the village even care she left? Just let it go, you are better off.

Episode 4
Well, at least the possibility that all these ninja pursuers can be brought back to life has been raised, which makes me happy. Although I am confused... there was a suggestion that some of the bags of leaves were burned but I'm not 100% clear if that actually happened. There is still something about the comedic tone of this show that makes me giggle but also vaguely repulses me. |

Yeah, it's a weird vibe, and I still think it has more in common with American Cartoon shows than most anime. The Leader, who was something like the voice of reason, turning out to be a sketchy, freeloading gambling addict and womanizer, for example. The casual dismissal of murder. The pacing where someone does or says something at least mildly horrible or shameless blank faced every 15 seconds as if it were par for the course.
That said, the anime is its own thing. I don't actively look forward to it or feel compelled to look for a Ninja and Assassin Under One Roof tee shirt online, but I'm not bored when I watch it, and I usually get some chuckles in. |

It is probably a funny thing that the office lady is the strangest character in show for how ordinary she is. But she is also supporting her ex-ninja girlfriend that she provides an allowance to find a job, but not surprised that she instead spends it all on gambling. Kind of confusing in figuring out if their relationship is healthy or not.
I think that I am going to call it that the possibility of being able to resurrect people turned into leaves is all the more reason that it won't actually happen, just dangling the possibility of all the interestingly designed characters could be returned. If it does happen, it will most certainly be brought back wrong that it would have been best that they didn't try to play god. I am kind of wondering how they plan to escalate it. Maybe kill off a mother who has kids waiting for her to come home? |

Episode 5
Okay, someone decided that they needed to ramp up the SHAFT this episode, all the cuts and multimedia stuff is some very classic SHAFT elements. I would be curious of whos decision it was, whether a veteran or someone wanting to do things like they have done before. I guess that they figured that the premise was especially silly with a robot double this episode that they could ramp up the surreal aspects. The tragic aspect was sort of flipped that Konoha was devastated over a character being killed off I noticed that the ED had fully replaced Satoko with her robot double, but I also noticed several other things. In a part with some characters dancing there are piles of leaves (and burnet remains), I don't know if it has been getting updated every episode but characters in the ED have been removed based on being killed and their body removed. There are string of other characters dancing that I think we are likely to see be killed off, along with several dogs for some reason. But the scientist assassin has been included more prominently, so she might actually stay on without being killed. |

Maybe the assassin responded to a robot because she's basically one herself?
At one point, I did think that Satoko should have just taken the opportunity to run away and become a cook or a dog groomer or something since any pursuing ninjas would probably go after her robot double. |
