Sigh, I was kinda looking forward to this film. I'm not too disappointed that he decided against it though, but I wish he would release some of the rights to the series so that people can release the anime version of Battle Angel Alita or adapt it into an anime if they wanted to.

It was already released over here wasn't it? The anime that is. You can still pick up the dubbed VHS from Right Stuf's bargain bin for a dollar.

He hasn't said he isn't going to do it. He hasn't actually said anything about Battle Angel Alita at all. All he's done is name a different project that he intends to start after he finishes what he's working on now.

He doesn't own the animation rights for Battle Angel Alita - securing the film rights doesn't give you control over every other aspect of the property.

Moomin: He owns the rights to the current anime, which is why it's been OOP for so long. It's like Spider-Man all over again. He was gonna make that into a movie, too. Rolling Eyes

Really, I didn't know that, he could release a DVD of that, surely? I have seen it and it's very good. Have yet to find it on DVD though.

Uh yeah VHS isn't exactly quality standard for 2008 sorry.

Wow the one anime adaptation I was really looking forward too. I guess I just trusted James more than the others with the visual style needed for Battle Angel.

Yeah I would love to own a DVD copy of Battle Angel though. When I heard that he got the rights to the anime I got excited and thought that it would be made within a couple years. Boy how wrong I was.

I would rather see a TV series (animated) based on the manga than a Hollywood movie/CG. The idea of Anime or Manga being adopted into Hollywood movies doesn't really excite me so if Cameroon decides not to do the movie then i won't complain Twisted Evil

They are probably all looking at the results that Speed Racer is getting at the moment and are starting to reconsider their positions by lining up alternative projects to fill the void.

Well, we can't be certain how these anime adaptations will fare until DB and Astroboy get a release. In this case, it's just Jimmy being wishy-washy again.

I would daresay that until Speed Racer has been released on the asian continent and in Japan, that we won't know exactly how much it will make. And also, it's not really the best litmus test to tell us how a more adult series would fare as an adaptation, not that DB or Astroboy will help either.

Wait, so this is like Metallica and the Johnny Got His Gun movie?

Not that I care for the Battle Angel anime, but it's always irritating to see new ownership disregard the rest of the franchise.

I'm caring a lot less about the manga recently, but I would hope that Cameron does get the backing and time needed for his movies. They'd at least be pretty to look at.

Its already dead and buried in the rest of the world. Even if a record number of viewers saw it in asia and Japan, it still wouldn't break even. Its goose, is for lack of a better term, cooked.

This most likely is the kiss of death for a Cameron "Battle Angel"
movie.

Don't think it was because of Speed Racer or other anime related
movie failures. Movies don't fail because they are related or
adapted from anime, they fail because the vision or production of
the movie failed.

If Cameron really wanted to make "Battle Angel" he would have
made it. The bigger the name the more power they have.

What most likely happened is at one time "Battle Angel" was a
fresh idea for him, now another idea has popped up, and he is all
excited about it, and Battle Angel gets thrown into the garbage
heap with all of his other dropped idea's. If he was able to make it
when he was excited about it, it probably would have been made.

Now he will probably tie up the license for years, just in case he
changes his mind and since he has paid for it.

From everything we've seen, though, he wants certain technologies available for screening the movie, and for shooting it, (or, rather, the multiple movies he'd talked about it being) and they're still not widely available. This doesn't mean that it's dead. It's just still pending. He seemed really passionate about the project in an interview I read a long while ago. I can't imagine him just giving it up.

On the other hand, though, has anyone heard anything more to the report that Melissa Joan Hart is doing a Real Bout High School movie?
