None of those series have endings that are in conflicts with what's happened before. Everything is foreshadowed in some way or another. Visual clues are used, and there's A LOT of implied evidence for other elements that aren't directly answered (or spoon-fed, in the case of other anime).

If the ending of a story makes thematic and narrative sense but the viewer doesn't understand this, then it is not the fault of the writers', but the viewer.

Thank you! I think Evangelion tried a little too hard (one episodes of introspection would've been enough; i prefer the movie); Texhnolyze isn't mystical at all, just sad; and for RahXephon, it probably helped that I was reading a translation Miguel Leon de Portilla's "La Philosofia Nahuatl" at the time, so I knew precisely what "ollin," "ixtli," and "yolteotl" meant. When my anime club watched it, I explained the definitions to them, and they totally got it.

I can't believe that someone described Trigun as a non-ending. I mean, there are plenty of things to fault with the series, but calling it a non-ending? spoiler["He reaffirms his convictions while still defeating his nemesis when he thought he'd have to abandon them to do so"] isn't a good enough conclusion for you??

As for the manga/anime thing... i tend to treat the two as separate entities and judge them accordingly. Take Hellsing, for example - as an adaptation of the manga (which I love), it stinks, but as its own story, I really like it. The OVA has disappointed me, actually, in part because of how much the music sucks compared to the anime. Frankly, I'd just as soon read the manga and save some money.

Ah, I KNEW it! My friend didn't believe me when I said there was an OVA, because he figure it would be released (I too was confused on that part). And it's already been dubbed? Come on, Geneon, you guys are "sorta" back in business, release it already!

Um, yeah, about that... The thing is that the episodes 25 & 26 on vol. 8 are the OVAs.

As for the anime series that has managed to pump me up, it's none other than Fist of the North Star(which I am currently watching).

If you're wondering why I'm seeing this, it's because it's a nice change of pace from Dragon Ball Z.

The fights don't last forever, the attack names are called after said attacks are performed, the story doesn't waste any time on the hero's training to become an unstoppable fighting machine(mainly because he already is one at the start of the series) and deaths are not avoided. At all. Also, said hero actually has to use different approaches to defeat his enemies when they are more difficult to dispatch.

I should also mention that villains do something nasty that riles up Kenshiro, I get riled up too. It's a pure joy for me to imitate his signature move, the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken (North Star Hundred Crack Fist)!

Sure, the series is dated, has recycled footage (and how), filler episodes and some mild story changes, but it's enjoyable all the same. [/i]

I would say the last anime series that had me pumped enough that I couldn't wait for the next episode like junkie needing his fix, was Ghosthunt. One of my favorite series of all time. Telepathy Girl Ran has me hooked for some reason and it really has something about it that makes me want more.

In terms of most recent anime to remind me why I'm a fan, then School Rumble. Bought Season 1 two weeks ago, and zoomed through the whole thing in 3 days (usually takes me a week to finish a 26-er). Hilarious stuff, looking forward to when I get around to buying Season 2. Other "reminders" this year have been Gurren Lagann and Haruhi Suzumiya.

Zalis: So you really enjoyed Vandread, huh? This one just got my notice after a re-watch of AMV Hell 4 (the classic "I'm gonna kill you"/"WHA?!"/"I didn't mean it!! Don't be angry!!" part Laughing). Boxset's kinda expensive though, so it'll probably have to wait until next year.

You could always buy the individual discs for a total of 48 bucks. TRSI has them all in stock right now, though only 2 copies of SS vol. 4. http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/lEDXLqxT423Dz63Ky7/browse/search/5/4/0/0/results/desc/asc/50/1

I was lucky and bought the boxset when they had a 40% off Geneon sale, so I got it for just over $50. Still need to watch it though. Good luck. Smile

If it hasn't been mentioned already, I'd say that Vision of Escaflowne is another great series where the manga and anime are different, but both are good in their own right. They both use roughly the same over-all plot, but really change about how its brought out. (My understanding is that the manga was made after the anime.)

You would be correct. Katsu Aki was tapped to draw a manga adaptation while the anime was currently in production/airing, hence the insane amount of differences in the story, and the extreme amount of ecchi in the manga version, though that's really just Aki's drawing style.

You know, it kind of irritates me when people lump Tenchi Masaki into the "spineless shonen comedy lead" category because it shows that people DID NOT WATCH THE SHOW!

Throughout the show, Tenchi Masaki demonstrates a lot of backbone in his defense of the household. When Kagato kidnaps Ryoko in "Kagato Attacks", Tenchi's immediate reaction is to charge off into space, sword in hand, to rescue her despite having no real knowledge of exactly how to do so.

It's a course of action that does get him killed (though Tsunami revives him and gives him advice on how to more effectively fight) but even that doesn't hold him back.

What's more, actually consider the way Tenchi interacts with the girls. In particular, he tends to be rather sarcastic towards Ryoko. As the show goes on, it becomes clear that he's taking a "head of the household" role that's very traditionally Japanese. Sure, he still has his awkward moments, but isn't that kind of part of being a teenage boy?

Sure, he runs from Ryoko the first time they meet, but then she IS blowing up his school just to take out some frustration.

No, Tenchi doesn't choose one of the girls, nor does he - as frequently suggested - just nail all of them. But then, it's never actually suggested that Tenchi regards his houseguests with anything more than familial affection, and occasionally exasperation.

Hey, all the guy wants is a bit of peace and quiet.

Hey, thanks for pointing that out, I appreciate it. Smile However, I prefer my DVDs be in a nice boxset or artbox together, so I think I'll wait and save up for the boxset (maybe they'll have another Geneon sale eventually). Thanks again!

i must say that i personally like the One Piece fillers. Sure there are a lot of them and in a few parts they might get a little slow, but in general One Piece fillers are way better than any other long running shows i've seen (cough- naruto/bleach).

I've watched all of One piece and fillers have the same ability to make you laugh, sometimes even more than the actual storyline. Plus half the time i don't even realize that the episodes are fillers which to me means that the filler has done its job perfectly.

As for the Answerfans question, that would definetly be Code Geass R2 Very Happy

Indeed, One Piece filler can be really funny (in a good way). Remember how the first one started? spoiler[Luffy sees something in the distance, grabs it, and launches his arm back BUT knocks a sleeping Zoro off the ship who wakes up in a mid-flight with a "WTH?!" look on his face. I couldn't breathe for a few seconds after that. Laughing ] That being said, I can tell's what filler and what's not. For me, the only long-running series where the filler seems indistinguishable from the canon is Inuyasha and Case Closed (kinda obvious why, in those cases).

If they'd waited to produce Berserk, we'd probably have a show that ran 3-4 seasons instead of just one that ended on a cliffhanger that went nowhere.

I was under the impression that Berserk ended after one season because of creative differences or something amongst the staff, not because they had run out of source material.

First off, the photo, is that a dachshund? I love dachshunds! <3

Second, cliches. Huh, well, yeah. The shonen and moe-type anime and manga pretty much fill the very definition of cliche after cliche, right? As far as other types, I wonder what creative work honestly doesn't fall under a cliche these days.

In Chobits, Chi does a Pinocchio and turns into a real girl at the end

Chobits manga and anime end differently, but Chi does not transform in a hardware sense, only a "software" sense. Partially in an effort to tone down certain references for child audiences, spoiler[ the fact that Chi cannot have sexual intercourse, because that act (pressing the button) would reformat her again, was made less explicit in the anime. This is made clear in the manga: Freya, Chi's sister whose consciousness she ingested prior to Freya's destruction, surfaces because she is protecting Chi. Freya's intention is to determine whether or not Hideki can love Chi without having sex with her. If not, Freya will permanently erase Chi to save her the pain of romantic loss now that she has become an entity who can love. We learn that Chi's creator designed her reset button's location specifically to force this scenario to occur, resulting in initiation of a program hidden inside Chi that would make all persocoms able to have emotion. Brilliantly, I think, the plot and major theme are mirrored in the picture book Chi reads called "A City with No People" (written for her by her "mother"... geez, I have to stop...]
Sorry for the long explanation. I just happen to admire and enjoy Chobits as good writing, with more depth than it normally gets credit for.

Seriously Zac, you get some bizare questions. Skipping lunch just to look at a guy isn't normal, and will eventually lead to trouble somehow. The other girl is a whole diffrent story. Eventually she will probably begin to stalk the guy and if he rejects her, there is a possibility she will become unstable.

I highly recomend that the parents of these kids send them to either a shrink or take them to a doctor. Long ago I had a friend who had different type of problems, but eventually had to be hospitalized for half a year and took a additional six months to recover as well.

I suggest the guy make new friends and quickly distance himself or talk to the parents of these girls about what has been going on and try to make them get help.

When I was in 8th Grade this boy used to follow me around until he got the nerve to speak to me. I didn't bite, but I didn't date him either.

My teen's friend stalked a cute guy one year at Comic-Con (when I got wind, I told my daughter not to hang with her when she was doing it.) To a certain level at a certain age it's sort of normal & most seem to grow out of it. Lacking social skills some teens don't know how to break the ice. Most are probably pretty embarrassed when they think back on it. There was a cute guy at church I watched when I was around 14, though I never followed him around--more stole glances, but then he got married. I knew I never had a chance because we didn't know one another & he was around 21-too old to worry about teenyboppers.

I remember too many 16, Teen Star & magazines like that which printed articles like "[hot teenybopper idol]'s favorite dates" (If you were on a date with Davy Jones, he would enjoy walking on the beach" or whatever). To a certain extent the "star/idol" machine, at least in the past, encouraged such behavior

Plot Armor. Acceptable in Cartoons. VERY, very odd in manga/anime.

Mmmm Im still pretty sure it was in a seinen anthology anyways (and there was plenty of nudity in there anyways).

But yeah that`s exactly my point to my original comment on the first page. What you had for your spoiler, pretty much summed it up.

How about Tenchi in "Tenchi in Tokyo"? (I hate the show so much!)

How were you able to not distinguish the filler and non-filler episodes of InuYasha?! I mean, I'm just curious because most of those fillers were either awful or were very inconsistent. But, then again, that's just my opinion.
