The third book is this one:

However, as in the second book, Howl, Sophie and Calcifer are only revealed some way into the story, and play supporting roles.

Jones was certainly complimentary about the film when it first opened in Britain (I saw a Q&A with her when it was shown at Cambridge.) However, IIRC, about a year or two later, she was interviewed by the sci-fi magazine SFX and indicated that she thought the film 'went wrong' when it departed from her story. Sorry, I can't dig out the relevant back-issue now, but I'll try to find the reference if anyone needs it. The film really starts to part company with her story in a big way when spoiler[ the witch of the waste is 'tamed' by Suliman's magic and joins Howl's and Sophie's 'family,' about halfway through the film. ]
