That was hilarious, the last question her answered. That should seriously be published somewhere. Or made into some sort of a time capsule, if the anime and manga culture is still around by then.

Ouran? No, you have to be quite rich to go there.
Naruto? Naw. If you're weak, you'd pretty much be screwed.
Claymore? You're probably either going to spoiler[awaken (If you're a Claymore)], or get your guts eaten out by a yoma. No thanks.

I have two worlds. One-

Pokemon: Apparently, world hunger is nonexistant. You get to have over a hundred pet Pokemon, most of which the concept of death does not apply to. And you get kicked out of your home at the age of ten to embark on your own "adventure" (Talk about dysfuntional parenting). Who wouldn't want that? It just seems really fun, where the laws of reality don't exist at all...

Fullmetal Alchemist: HECK YEAH. Alchemy, homunculus, a more realistic kind of reality, it's just plain awesome.

My biggest peeve with mainstream translations is that they often don’t translate the non-verbal parts, i.e. some character spends ten seconds reading a letter on screen that is never translated but is obviously important to the plot and we non-Japanese readers are left in the dark. I understand it gets tedious to see every street sign translated on-screen, but sometimes you need to know what’s what.

R1 DVDs almost always have on-screen text translated. In fact, some DVDs come with the option of turning the on-screen text subtitles on and off. Are you sure you're just not turning the subtitles on for text?

Truely inspired anime apocalypse.

And I will repeat my previous answer of wanting to visit the world of Aria, now that I have seen the first season of the anime. No wars, demon attacks, or even violent crime. Just cute girls rowing gondolas for tourists on a terraformed Mars. (Although I haven't noticed that the anime admits that Aqua used to be Mars, as the manga asserts.)

The only worry is the Martian cats, who have mysterious powers and uncertain motives.

Ah! Damn me from coming from a not so average family, and continuing my reputation as a badass!!

And damn my deviousness!!

And DAMN my taste in women!!!

DAMN me for despising normal girls, normal people and the word "normal" in general !! (a la Haruhi Suzumiya)

And DAMN me for being surrounded by the "weirdness" here in Japan!!

DAMN, my pride has been crushed badly!!

Thanks for the suggestion, and the welcome!. You know it would not surprise me if I forgot to turn on the text subtitles, but I think the bigger "problem" is I am just so curious about what everything says that I wish it was all translated! I guess the answer is to learn Japanese.

In regards to the "Anime Apocalypse", I buy most of the series that I enjoyed fansubbed that get released in Region 1 (currently, Ouran High School Host Club and Lucky Star), but the Catch-22 for anime companies is that I'd buy twice as much anime if they licensed more of the moe-oriented shows I like (Minami-Ke, Kannagi, the Ichigo Mashimaro OVA's, and Moe-tan top my wish list), but if they licensed more of the sort of anime I like, they'd be hard-pressed to make a profit in the current climate as the shows I like are generally a tough sell (niche within the anime niche market). Even most of the shows that I would re-buy on BluRay (once I get a player, hopefully by next spring) are kinda niche.

plus I'd get to kick some ass, while doing some super cool fighting moves, while being hilarious at the same time, and maybe give the pimp of Furinkan High, Kuno (seriously, he should wear a purple suit, and have some funky background music), anyway I'd give Kuno a crotchbuster, if he tries to make sexual advances at me, and kill my douchebag of a father Genma Saotome!!
And I'd hook up with Ukyo, instead of the pig fetishy Akane Tendo (man, does PMS last that long, and what exactly does she do when she sleeps with Ryoga in his pig form), plus I'd get talk like Megumi Hayashibara, SUPER COOL!!

I wouldn't hang out with the Ranma characters but what's appealing about the world they live in is that, no matter what bizarre yiffy or other body transformation fantasies I might have, there's a cursed pool at Jusenkyo to suit every fetish.

But I'd probably just live in the world of a fan service anime where all the girls are idealized, like that in DearS, for example.

I'll have to purchase Fallout 3 through Steam as the physical PC version installs that God awful SecuROM despite Bethesda claiming that they wouldn't use it. I do not appreciate what basically amounts to malware being installed on my computer with no easy way of removing it.

The popular editions of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales were made kid-safe. The originals are pretty out there.

Their were seven editions of the book. The editions from 1819 (which would be the second ed.) on were the ones that were made more kid friendly, mostly by Wilhelm, and also added more tales and took some of them out (f.ex. How Some Children Played at Slaughtering). In the 1812 edition of Rapunzel, the question that she asks Mother Gothel is, "Tell me, Mother Gothel, why do you think my clothes have become too tight for me and no longer fit?" And Disney preceded to sanitize them further still. Cinderella's step sisters no longer cut their foot to fit it into the slipper nor have theirs eyes pecked out, and the Queen in Snow White is no longer killed by being forced to dance in red-hot shoes.

As for the censure in Hansel and Gretel they had a mother and not a stepmother.

The translation I have is from the seventh edition where she is neither called mother nor stepmother. She is simply the woman or the father's wife. And while I'm on the topic, does anyone know where I can find an English translation of the 1st ed.?

As for the column, the answer to the last question was epic. For Answerfans, I can see Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, and Gunsmith Cats working. Gunsmith Cats actually was the first to pop into my head when I read the question. They are also rather boring answers being typical and safe answers. After some thought, I think I would choose Osamu Tezuka's Adolf. Record of Lodoss War and 12 Kingdoms would be my other choices. I haven't given thought to actors, but for directors I would want Steven Spielberg for Adolf and Peter Jackson for the other two.

I would be happy living in the world of Sensitive Pornograph. Nothing but love and passion and carnal delights!

Another fun place to live would be Puni Puni Poemi because I love that show's brand of frenetic idiotic-ness.

But I often wish I lived in the world of Pokemon. My fave character ever is Harley. I know he acts and sounds gay, but I prefer to believe that he is metro- or bi-sexual and I could be his girlfriend!

After some consideration I think that Victoria Peridot's casting for Nana is pretty good. Though, aside from her point about choosing relative unknowns, I think Keira Knightly would be a good Osaki Nana and Anna Faris could be a good Komatsu Nana.

I personally think Keira Knightly as Osaki is self-explainatory, so I'll make a case for Anna Faris: If you dye her hair should could be similar enough. As for personality and acting, she was the girl in Lost in Translation. That character IS a twenty something girl who falls for an older man, thats how Komatsu Nana's character plot line starts (Except in high school). She can also play ditzy as evidenced by her role in House Bunny.

Of course this is based on some grand hypothesis that hollywood could get a license to produce its own version which would then conflict with their original in the market in Japan. Also.... I don't know how they would sell to an American audience "Okay, they all have Japanese names, even though they're clearly Americans." So they'd have to change the names, and probably the title of the movie wouldn't be Nana, it'd be whatever name they replaced Nana with. But its not like the story could only be told in Japan, you could set the story in America just as easily. They could both be from New England area and travel to New York, they're traveling in winter and its snowing. Totally plausible.

Of course now all the fans crucify me for blasphemy, but a live action movie set in Japan already exists. If you want an American version you have to set it in America and change the names so they make sense. Like I said, the story transcends area.

I'd be absolutely fine with taking that approach.
If there is some warrant to changing the locations and characters to suit the target audience, changing the title would be a good option to take. It would do no detriment to the film itself, whilst at the same time causing no upset amongst those who wish to continue associating the title of the original with the names and places (etc) of the original instead of just a particular sequence of events.

we are still a fandom, just like the video game, we will not become classic unless at least one generation go to grave with their beloved media.
