Seeing as it's Murakami, I wonder if his video will one of the 18+ exhibits, but I don't think Dunst does that sort of thing. I've got her in her sailor costume on me desk top next to Sailor Mercury, both looking at each other. Wink

Mohawk52, Murakami definitely would have to be 18+. He makes anime porno statues that would make even my ecchi interest want to squirm.

It's not like that's the only thing (or even the main thing) he does. For instance, his Kaikai Kiki characters, paintings filled with hundreds of brightly-coloured eyeballs and flowers, and so on. His art deals with all kinds of popular culture, from anime fandom to high fashion Louis Vuitton handbags.

Just got back from seeing it at the Tate Modern today.

No, the exhibit is not in the 18+ area. The 18+ area was filled mostly with hardcore material, which I am not going to get into detail here. Suffice to say, when it says 18+ in the room, it is definently for 18+.

The Kirsten Dunst music video is at the very end of the "Pop Art" exhibit. This is a paid exhibit, so get ready to shell out 12.50 pounds in order to attend. Inside the final exhibit room, which is dedicated to Murakami's work, is a MASSIVE wall mural of Kirsten Dunst as the "Akihabara Majokko Princess". The official name of the mural is "Giant Magical Princess! She's Walking Down The Streets of Akihabara!". The mural literally shows a manga-style drawn version of Dunst in her costume, as a massive giant stepping into Akihabara. Interestingly enough, Murakami has an image of Haruhi Suzumiya in the mural.

The rest of the exhibit has on display artwork that Murakami has collaborated with, such as people like Kanye West (diamond studded Pepsi cans, etc…). Two brochures are available for visitors to pick up in this room. One is called “Akihabara Majokko Princess”, and contains a conversation between director McG and Murakami on working together on the film. Seems Murakami was a fan of McG’s first “Charlie’s Angels” movie, and in turn thought McG would be perfect to direct the music video. As for choosing Kirsten Dunst, McG claimed that Dunst has a big international following thanks to the “Spider-Man” films and thus he thought she would be perfect for it.

The video was shot on the RED One 4K HD camera, and it shows at the exhibit. The video is shown in full 1080P on a massive HD display….Akihabara hasn’t looked better than this. The video itself is what I believe is Dunst singing the Vapors’ song “Turning Japanese”. It was not the original version of The Vapors song, so thus I believe she was singing it. Anyway, the video shows Dunst dancing and singing the song, while showing close ups of Japanese with total blank faces at the camera. None of them smiled, and I got the feeling that they were wondering what the hell was going on. One nice touch McG put into the video was that as Dunst dances around, her hair leaves behind sparkles (she’s a magical princess…). To boot, she waves around a wand with sparkles, and her red shoes even sparkle as well. The video also has shots of hentai in it, including a shot of one unnamed anime character with her shirt ripped off, exposing everything…. I have a feeling McG has a thing for hentai after seeing this video. There also shots of the cosplayers, and Maid Café ladies out in Akihabara doing their thing. Haruhi Suzumiya makes an appearance as well, as a massive artwork decoration on the hood of a fan’s car.

Other than that, that’s pretty much the video. Kirsten Dunst dancing around as a magical princess, clueless Japanese with blank stares at the camera, lots of hentai/fanservice shots of anime ladies, and some beautiful shots of Akihabara, all set to Dunst singing The Vapors song “Turning Japanese”.

Overall, the “Pop Art” exhibit is worth seeing, if at least for the Kirsten Dunst music video. However, I recommend avoiding the 18+ rooms, since much of it felt like literal overkill.

It sounds to me like something that would make me want to cringe and deny I was ever an anime fan. Wink
