Will all due respect for your viewpoint, my choice in entertainment has nothing whatsoever to do with my politics, social ethic or anything else in the real world. Especially my cartoons. I'm not feeling the respect coming the other direction when you make assumptions about my real-world attitudes based on my entertainment choices.

Art isn't politics, and nearly always fails when it strives to be politically correct for the sake of a certain viewpoint. It's fine to promote causes, but carry those signs outside the theater, not inside where I've paid to be entertained rather than propagandized.

Oh, I loved watching all of you guys squirm! I'm not saying you're "deviants," just that this entire series is an insult to women for the way that it sexualizes gruesome violence against them. Whatever reasons you may have for watching it, this series is appalling, as is its licensing.

Quote:
Add: And vash, I am insulted by what you are insinuating, I'm not just being flippant. Practice what you preach

What the hell is that supposed to mean? I quit this series after two episodes, it was so awful. And yeah, I've watched other series that have done the same, and unlike you guys, generally felt guilty for it. So I do "practice what I preach."

Again, what we approach in this series is the deontological versus ontological debate. Something isn't vile because it causes a negative effect (i.e. going out and imitating it), but in and of itself is vile. Which is what this series is.

And now you may get pissed off at me again for insulting your torture-porn. Laughing

Well, I'm usually not one to judge. I'm sure I'd be perfectly ok in your company if I knew you enjoyed watching things like this, but, on the other hand, if I had a daughter I'd be a little hesitant to leave her alone in the room with you.

You can take from that statement what you will. Razz

Oh good grief! Rolling Eyes Don't bother arguing with vash, pparker. You won't get anywhere. I'm a woman and I'm planning to check out the same show and I'll decide for myself if it's degrading or not. But then of course, I enjoy drawing large- breasted women so apparently I already have no self respect.! Very Happy
( And no, I'm not a lesbian.)

vashfanatic, why should I feel guilty? The show depicts sexual deviancy and brutal violence intermixed, yes, but it doesn't do so to be titillating. It's all still treated as something horrific and despicable. I find it fascinating and that's why I want to check out this show further. The show has a sexual tone, but that's to blur the line and further disturb.

Boring.

HD anime needs Blu-ray.

Definitely.

Not yet, but they should be. And once they start getting HDTVs and Blu-Ray players, I bet that lack of interest will change pretty quick.

Ha ha ha... Impressive insults. That said, I do feel a little guilty at times for watching this show. But certainly not because I think the fact that it was made is disrespectful to women. Because I don't think it's anymore disrespectful than something like, say, yaoi is to men. And I don't find that to be offensive either. But I guess it goes without saying the majority of the people who want to watch this show are probably men.

Ooh, I like the sound of that.

I guess I still don't understand enough about deontology and ontology. Because I never understood how an idea or concept can be intrinsically evil just by the nature that it exists.

That makes sense. Especially if you don't know anything else about them.

Not really. We've got a PS3 and 3 of the 4 TVs in our house are capable of HD, but we own a total of 3 Blu-Ray discs and none of them are anime. We're in no hurry to jump to the next format. Blu-Ray is too much of a risk for series that haven't proven themselves yet on DVD.

A while back, someone suggested extreme content as a possible reason for Kara no Kyoukai not being licensed yet.

Now they have no excuse.

Ah, what else are you going to do with too much free time but argue on the Internet.

Except that's not what you said. I re-quote:
vashfanatic wrote:

What you implied was that someone who watched this show had, by default, no respect for women. That's a pre-condition, i.e., I chose or enjoyed this entertainment because I don't respect women. Not the same as saying that by viewing a show, my real-life behavior changes.

You could complain that I could be spending my time better, which would be more ethical, and probably be right in the deontological sense. But then, that would apply to at least 95% of all filmed entertainment from one or another personal and subjective viewpoint... and would be really boring Smile.
