I'm making this a general thread anyone with a question about a certain releases' type of packaging. If you want to know if something came in a bailey box, a brick, litebox, stackpak or whatever, ask it here. Also, if you want to know what an art box, chipboard thinpak or designer box looks like, ask for pictures and someone may provide them. You can also ask about art boxes from other countries if you're interested in importing for a specific show.

I do ask that you provide a link to the Amazon, Rigthstuf or wherever you shop listing so that people know exactly which release you're talking about since some shows have so many it can get confusing. You can even use the ANN listing from the encyclopedia if it has a picture. Of course the rule that prevents linking to Ebay is still in effect here. Also, if you're asking what an art box in another country looks like then that's an exception unless you do have a link to a listing for it.

Since most of are collectors I thought it wouldn't kill us to help each other out. Also, for people fairly new to collecting (like myself) this could be helpful since we're mostly buying things we weren't around to see or hear about.

Another thing: Feel free to post pictures of art boxes and unique sets that aren't already on the list and I'll add them.

I'll start out with three Geneon releases:

Kannazuki no Miko box set and the Ikki Tousen box set- I basically want to know if these are the singles in the art box used during the singles run and if they're sturdy.

Tenchi Universe- I've seen a few pictures, but I want to know for certain if it's a paper slipcover that houses the singles? That's what it looks like from the glimpses I've caught on Ebay, but I'm not 100% sure. If it does, is it really thin or is it somewhat durable?

Good, I am actually trying to find anime that has a unique packaging. Giant Robo's looks like an eye, the gantz boxset is a steel ball that looks like the gantz ball, Wolf's Rain LE has a weird shape, and The beck box looks like an amp.

I'm not sure what you're asking about this item but I think I can give an adequate answer Anime hyper I have two of these, my boyfriend bought two on accident way back when it was first released. If this is the same one.

They're all single DVDs in their own separate case (not thinpak type) and in a sort of artbox type. I think the box is a bit flimsy, I have to dig it up to be sure, I don't think it's hard cardboard type. I'll see if I can compare it to another box.

Well, some of the original FMA DVDs came in metal tins like this one:
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/IRorkr75fE8qiJsiHd/browse/item/69404/4/0/0
And the Lucky Star LE's came in these longer-than-usual boxes:

That pretty much answers my question. From what I saw, it looked like a Media Blasters or CPM type box set where it was a flimsy slipcover. Thanks.

I'm going to post a list in the opener in the near futre that has photos others have taken of unique sets and art boxes. If you have pictures of those sets, do share and I'll add them.

Vol. 1 + art box. Those days are over and I'm going to miss them dearly. I'm an art box freak, and have only 3 series without a box in my collection. I've been meaning to take pictures of certain boxes for a while and I guess now is the time. These pictures are of my personal collection. Here goes...

Lunch Box Style: Funimation was a fan of the lunch box as they used this style on more than one occasion.

1. 009-1 (ADV)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/0091.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/0091Opened.jpg

2. Armored Trooper VOTOMS (Central Park Media) - Unlike most box sets of this type, the top is removable.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/ArmoredTrooperVotoms.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/ArmoredTrooperVotoms2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/ArmoredTrooperVotoms3.jpg

3. Fruits Basket (Funimation)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/FruitsBasket.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/FruitsBasket2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/FruitsBasket3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/FruitsBasket4.jpg

4. Galaxy Railways (Funimation)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GalaxyRailways1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GalaxyRailways2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GalaxyRailways3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GalaxyRailways4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GalaxyRailways5.jpg

5. Kodocha: I wish Funimation would have made the two boxes complement. They look awkward next to each other.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Kodocha1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Kodocha3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Kodocha2.jpg

6. Nadia (ADV): This set isn't very attractive as the lack of series art work is sorely missing. However, I do like the thinpak DVD cases, but I'm curious as to why ADV just didn't release a thin-pak.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Nadia-1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Nadia2-1.jpg

7. Rurouni Kensin (Media Blasters)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/RurouniKenshin1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/RurouniKenshin2.jpg

Beck (Funimation): Not really a lunch box, but it's still cool to look at.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Beck.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Beck2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Beck3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Beck4.jpg

Book Style: Geneon used this style more than once; matter of fact, they had a bad habit of making art boxes that result in discarded DVD cases.

1. Card Captor Sakura (Geneon)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CardCaptorSakura1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CardCaptorSakura2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CardCaptorSakura3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CardCaptorSakura4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CardCaptorSakura5.jpg

2. Kyo Kara Maoh! (Geneon): The only difference these sets have with the CCS sets is that these sets open from the side whereas you have to take the slipcovers off to access the DVDs with CCS.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KyoKaraMaoh.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KyoKaraMaoh2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KyoKaraMaoh3.jpg

Just Plain Creative

1. Berserk (Media Blasters): Easily MB's best box.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Berserk.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Berserk2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Berserk3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Berserk4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Berserk5.jpg

2. Boogiepop Phantom (RightStuf): I personally think that if anyone is going to buy this series, it should be this version. It came with a lot of goodies too.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/BoogiepopPhantom2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/BoogiepopPhantom3-1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/BoogiepopPhantom5.jpg

3. Gurren Lagann (Bandai):
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GurrenLagann2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GurrenLagann1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GurrenLagann3.jpg

4. Irresponsible Captain Tylor (RightStuf): The smallest box sets in my collection
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/IrresponsibleCaptainTylor1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/IrresponsibleCaptainTylor2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/IrresponsibleCaptainTylor3.jpg

5. Kimagure Orange Road (AnimEigo): There's nothing unique about this particular box set, but I think it's worth mentioning that it's extremely rare for a long series to be collected in one box. When it's done, it should be done like the Kimba the White Lion box set (with the DVDs inside). ...it's also not a good idea to have writing on the box.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KimagureOrangeRoad.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KimagureOrangeRoad2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/KimagureOrangeRoad4.jpg

6. Kodocha (Funimation): Similar to the style of the Boogiepop Phantom box set
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Kodocha5.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Kodocha7.jpg

7. Magic Knight Rayearth II (Media Blasters): This box doesn't match with the first season, but I don't mind in this case. There's writing on the box, but again, I don't mind.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/MagicKnightRayearth1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/MagicKnightRayearth2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/MagicKnightRayearth3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/MagicKnightRayearth4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/MagicKnightRayearth5.jpg

8. Scryed (Bandai): I don't know what the hell was going on here, but Bandai released this during the period when they were doing crazy box sets for a limited time for certain series.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Scryed.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/ScryedBack.jpg
This is still sealed, so I didn't take pictures of the inside.

9. Tsubasa Chronicle (Funimation)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/TsubasaChronicle3.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/TsubasaChronicle1.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/TsubasaChronicle4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/TsubasaChronicle6.jpg - Wow

10. Tweeny Witches (Media Blasters)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/TweenyWitches.jpg

11. Vision of Escaflowne (Bandai): Nothing creative about this box set. I just posted pictures because it's my style of choice. It's hard to get the DVDs out, though.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Escaflowne.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Escaflowne2.jpg - Sardines...

12. Wolf's Rain (Bandai): Someone already mentioned this box set and here are pictures. I actually prefer the earlier white art box, but I bought this because I wanted it all at once and it was on sale at Best Buy at the time of purchase.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/WolfsRain.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/WolfsRain2.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/WolfsRain4.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/WolfsRain5.jpg

13. Zegapain (Bandai)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Zegapain.jpg - looks like a normal box set, doesn't it?
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/Zegapain5.jpg - VOILA!

The Ugly
1. Glass Mask (Sentai): I was very disappointed with this. It looks like a brick from the outside (but suspiciously light), but it's a stack pack and the only one in my collection.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GlassMask1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/GlaskMask2.jpg - Maybe I should give points for the unique "insert," eh?

Heh, I wish I still had that thing that was released for The Story of Saiunkoku.

An Import and Paul Champagne

1. Death Note: I imported the art box from Australia (Madman).

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/DeathNote1.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/DeathNote2.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/DeathNote3.jpg

2. Cowboy Bebop

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p67/Pantha2182/CowboyBebop3.jpg

3. Trigun

Paul Champagne is a graphic designer that makes custom made art boxes. His boxes are definitely worth buying, especially to you new collectors that got stuck buying singles for certain series. His website is:

Whew.

I don't get how the second memorial set looks like this:

I was thinking about getting those at some point, but if they're differences are that drastic, I don't know anymore. Call me anal, but I like my sets of the same show to match.

It's difficult to tell from those screens, but I was always confused with my Galaxy railways box because there is a picture printed on the inside of the box, but it's upside down compared to the front cover. If you look at picture one, and open the box like a book, you see the image in picture 5 (there's more under the DVDs, Layla standing over an image of the Earth with arms open), but it's upside down.

I'm going to reask these:

and add a question about the Scrapped Princess art box. I want to know if the figure's housing is physically attached to the box or is it removable to make it then it look like a normal box? If that's too confusing, could someone just take a few snaps so I can see exactly what it looks like?

Scrapped Princess had the figure inside the artbox proper, and actually had several "artboxes" with different figures inside, similar to the special editions of Eureka Seven.

Those weren't art boxes. Those were disposable boxes meant to house the toy. I doubt anyone would actually want to collect their DVDs inside them. Scrapped Princess is one of the series I held off on (right along with Princess Tutu) because it didn't have an art box. I bought the brick instead.

...hey, I own Eureka Seven. I'll post pictures of the two REAL art boxes and the ones you can throw away (yeah, I kept them) later. Unless someone else beats me to it.

Anyways, more pictures below:

Match up

ADV got props for matching their Ah, My Goddess box with Media Blasters, but it's not the only time such a thing has happened. ADV owns the license to the first season of Super Gals and Right Stuf has the second. RightStuf matched their thinpak with ADV's. Funimation also matched Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid with ADV's first two FMP series.

...where my pictures of FMP go?! Man, I know I took them.

The Power of the Slip Cover
If you can't get all the slip covers, don't get any.

I thought the slip covers were just part of the DVDs until I saw a DVD without one at Best Buy.

2. X TV

VIZ Doesn't Like Art Boxes But...

...they did make one. And for a shoujo they let go out of print, too. Anyways, this is how a multi-disc collection should be done:

And Twelve Kingdoms is such a wonderful series! But, Media Blasters did give it proper treatment. If you're going to get the series, I recommend investing in the Premium box sets. Or buy the singles and get the Paul Champagne box. Whatever works. Oh, you can get that new orange collection set if you want to. Just know that's it just the two economy sets (pictured above) housed in an art box.

Redemption
Some companies release boxes that are so atrocious that they later release another one. ADV did this with Rahxephon. Bandai it with My Hime. And Media Blasters did it with Moribito.

Those weren't art boxes. Those were disposable boxes meant to house the toy. I doubt anyone would actually want to collect their DVDs inside them. Scrapped Princess is one of the series I held off on (right along with Princess Tutu) because it didn't have an art box. I bought the brick instead.

I'm aware that Bandai uses cheap-o boxes for it's other LE sets, but the first set does say it has an artbox. That's the thing, it doesn't look like one even though it says it is and that's why I'm confused. It looks no different from the other LE boxes. I have the AL set as well, but I'm slowly replacing all of mine with box + singles.

So, FaytLein, is it an actual artbox with chipboard made to house DVDs or is it just one of those paper sets that's not really useful for anything?

It is a thin cardboard box, that you can use to hold discs, but it will not be a perfect fit, very similar to Eureka Seven SE's. (The box itself is slightly longer than usual, creating gaps.)
