Crunchyroll is handling the production, promotion, and financing of the new DVD release for 5 Centimeters Per Second, while Bandai Entertainment helping to manufacture, package, and distribute the DVD
I really hope this means Bandai will be handling the encoding and authoring instead of crunchyroll. Bandai Ent may not be quite up to Bandai Visual's standard, but it'd be hard to be worse than crunchyroll.

This is such cool news- both that Crunchyroll is trying out DVD licensing and that they rescued such a great movie off the bat! 5 Centimeters had such a small print run and was out of print so soon after it was released, so I feel that not many people got to see it when it first came out. Which is a complete shame, because it is a fantastic movie. It's my favorite of Shinkai's stuff, and I hope that lots of people are able to get it with this re-release!

Oh, and I remember hearing lots of people really liked the Crunchyroll version of this movie's dub...

You'd think that this title would have gotten a blu-ray release.

Crunchyfail. How fitting that a backwards company is embracing a dead format.

Its interesting that of all companies, Crunchyroll would be re releasing 5 cm. I've been looking for it for quite some time so I will probably pick up a copy when it is released. I wonder will they go for a bluray version also?

This is beyond-amazing news. This is my favorite movie, and finally getting a copy on DVD would be awesome.

...so I feel a little bad when I have to ask: why no Blu-ray version? This movie is beautiful, and I want to see it in the best quality possible. I'm ready to double-dip even if it's a simultaneous release, just so I can watch it in HD at home and still share it with my friends.

Different rights, not cheap. Maybe one day though. The new Bang Zoom dub is good, so it's certainly a good thing that it's finally seeing a physical release.

Not dead yet, just less desirable when a BluRay already exists.

Well, paint me surprised. I'm pretty stoked about this. Loved the movie, and have been disappointed that I couldn't snag a physical copy without paying out the butt. Now though. Although I won't lie, I might hold off in hopes of a BD.

This is great news! I always feel so guilty after watching the fansub, so it'll be nice to get one of my favorite films on DVD. But I'm a bit surprised that CR would go into actual merchandise. o:

Didn't see this coming. Will definitely double dip for another dub. Hoping great things come from this.

I'll definitely pick it up, but continue to watch my ADV copy.

Or maybe I should buy 10 copies just in case.
