Yeah, found 'em on Rightstuf. The tins are another story. People are charging as much as 140 dollars...
I love FMA to the bone, but DAYUM! I'll just buy the DVD set.

But to be fair we did pay a pretty penny for the 3 tins. I note 13 dvds for the set so I estimate it was $90 per set & I bought those on sale at Right Stuf as singles. It's sort of the idea of a "limited edition"

I use the SAVE editions for titles I'm less interested in. I like an actor but it's not a top favorite or I assume the actor I like is in a smaller role. I've gotten Wall Flower, Red Garden, Cyborg 009, & Utawarerumono in that format.

There's all sorts of fan service. I note a lot in Gundam on the machines. Burton's Batman when the Batwing pauses in front of the moon. They're there for the fans. I tend to ignore a certain level so yeah, when it's so blatant I note it, yeah, I feel it's excessive.
On the other hand, I'm not a "whole picture" sort of person which is why I have 2500 anime dvds. I really don't care if it goes south in the end or if overall it's less than all that, as long as it gives me a memorable moment or 2--a good laugh; an incredibly cool heroic scene; a total psychoboy off the deep end; even some framable moments artwise & I'm happy. So even though Tenjyo Tenge is a fan service title I hated the big-breasted gals on, there was enough cool stuff out of Tomokazu Seki, Souichiro Hoshi, Kazuki Yao & Toshiyuki Morikawa to make me happy. I can wade thru a large amount of average to see a good moment which in a way is my own version of fan service. I love a really good psychoboy laughing his head off Clair/Heat Guy J sort of character (male. The gals never really do it for me). Orphen 2 is ok, except there is an incredibly fantastic psychoboy who ups my pleasure so I probably rate that title higher than most.

Once I get my bog-cheap Chinese no-name personal media player, I'll have to buy some DVD's to get content for it, and S.A.V.E. is perfect for that. I could easily watch Venus and Virus or Blue Drop again, but I'd not want to drop a lot of money on them to do it.

It's not like I'm a prude or something,I have no problem with attractive characters, but when it's actual nudity like that I go from enjoying a cool show to being embarassed to be a loser watching cartoons about boobs. Sad
Not to mention anyone who thinks,"Hey what's this Japanamation stuff I've heard so much about" and randomly watches an episode of Full Metal Panic! is going to think the medium is just fake porn for wierdos and never bother giving it another chance.

There is only like one nudity scene (I don't even think its full frontal) in all three seasons of FMP, so wouldn't say FMP is an example of a show where the fan service becomes embarrassing.

I watched the first episode they had up (don't remember if it was actually episode one) and I got either full frontal or pretty close to it with a character who I believe was supposed to be a high school student. Rolling Eyes
It's absurd,and does more harm than good. I mean,Macross:Do
You Remember Love? is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen, but you can't show it to someone who isn't already a ddiehard anime fan, because guess what, they're going to think you're a pervert.

I would tend to agree with most of the ideas put forth in the Answerfans this week but I take exception with a comment one of the contributing letter authors made.

Black Lagoon -> Guns and Ammo

For those of you who don't know, Black Lagoon is an anime featuring hot women with guns. Guns and Ammo is a magazine for awful human beings, featuring hot women with guns.

Awful Human Beings!?

I am a fan of Anime and have been for many years. I am also a gamer, Manga reader, a Police Dispatcher, and a gun owner and as such Guns and Ammo is one of the publications I read. Does this make me an "Awful Human Being?"

I know this is the opinion of the Letter Author and not of ANN or the ANN staff. I just wanted to make my feelings on the matter known and now consider the subject closed.

Back on topic, if there is one thing that can be done to improve the Anime market I would improve accessibly. This can be done many ways from lowering prices or including more content, to re releasing the classics for a new generation.

I even agree with the idea put forth by the above mentioned letter author about cross - promotion.

Initial D could be advertised in any of the many car magazines.

They could run an ad for Ergo Proxy during a rerun of the X-Files.

I also like the sampler DVD idea but let's take that a step farther. Instead of just a random set of episodes and trailers they should have the same type of anime. (ie action, super natural ect...) and be available near the same genera of other mediums. Like a sampler with Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic near copies of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.

Just a couple of thoughts.

You either are an anime fan or not. There are no casual consumers that might buy a cheap collection like the s.a.v.e. line. the average person in America watches crap like 2 and a half men. Does that type of person go and buy a $30 anime set? Give me a break. Most anime fans don't spend a dime on anime in America. They watch it on free streams or download fansubs only. The few that do buy dvd's wait for the cheap sets or check the weekly specials on rightstuf. I would say the average anime fan buys the cheap repackaged sets while only the hardcore pay the premium prices for the initial releases. The casual consumer that happens to catch an episode on tv and doesn't know of anime isn't buying sh@t.

Ah well there ya go FUNi, Bandai, Section23. It seems all anime fans are born that way and there's no use trying to "fish" for them amongst the pond of "casual consumers" who it seems are also born to only watch "crap like 2 and a half men" and will not change their vewing interests, or habits. You might as well dump the lot in the skip and open a burger franchise instead. Did I mention I'm a casual consumer? But I only eat burgers that I make, sorry. Rolling Eyes

On the topic of buying sh@t, you are either the centre of the universe or you're not. I'm going with not. I'll even raise you a "you just pulled that out of your nether region".

BURN!!!!!
xD Had to say it.
But I gotta say that I'm a hard core fan and I'm buying a few of the S.A.V.E titles. They're cheap and they have some of my favorite series.
And what's the problem of buying something with a lowered price? You're still supporting the industry (the forbidden words!).
Please think before you judge.

(1) Even among existing anime fans, there are different degrees of intensity, different genre interests, and different levels of disposable income. (2) All anime fans became anime fans by being exposed to anime and finding something that they like in it ... and many who stay anime fans find their tastes changing as they watch more and learn the difference between the same old, same old and something fresh and original and (3) the fact that its not in the awareness of the average consumer doesn't many anything for a niche market ~ what matters is the way that those who do or might buy something act.

Those fans are outside the market, so are the same thing as fans of Two and a Half Men as far as the market is concerned.

The implication of this is that you need to have DVD's that can be sold as cheap sets or at wholesale terms that allow weekly specials on rightstuf in order to sell to this part of the market.

However, as Lance discussed on this week's ANNcast, Funimation still sells a substantial amount of DVD's in bricks and mortar stores, including Wal*Mart, Fry's, and others that don't appear in this stereotype above. Those same cheap sets are likely to be part of those sales.

Wait ... you just said the average anime fan doesn't buy sh!t.

OK, among the untypical anime fan that does buy sh!t, there are also those willing to pay more for something they see as collectible. So, if they are willing to pay enough to justify putting the premium series out, you got to put product out for them as well.

And obviously there either are some people who do not follow anime intensively but who do buy the occasional DVD if it looks interesting, or else there are some anime fans who are easier to convince to part with their hard-earned if the box is in front of them on the shelves, because despite the rumors of the death of B&M, the direct report we have is that it still provides a substantial chunk of total sales for the mainstream dub releases.

Niche markets do not work on "the average person does X" stereotypes. Those are mass markets. And anime, even at the top of the boom early in last decade, was never a mass market.

According to Hetalia, it's the Americans eating burgers non-stop. England's food tastes horrible & you passed your lousy tastes on to us (bad parent!). Smile

As I put set 2 into the player, we'll see what's going on with our Hetalia friends thru ep 52...

Come on, maxxjulie, I believe most dvd buyers have the titles they HAVE to have & the ones they'll pick up if the price is right.
And with the economy now, I also believe many of us have cut back on the must haves & are looking for more bargains which still supports the industry. On the last Funi sale I was only able to go for 5 sets-the next 2 One Piece, Red Garden, Jyu-Oh-Sei & Sengoku Basara. There were others I wouldn't mind getting, but they'll have to wait. On TRSI's Section 23 sale, I'd like to get about 7 sets, but I'll probably settle for the next Gintama & the 2 Ghost Sweeper Mikami because my money's tighter than a year ago. Hopefully things will be better next time these sales roll around or it will be OP, Hetalia, & Sgt Frog if they put more up & Black Butler if I don't manage to withstand temptation (about $7 less than splurging)
You know all the adults here have such boring things to deal with like housing, utilities, transportation & the like that suck up the majority of our income.

.........$30 isn't a premium set. It's about what you can get a 24 episode Funi set for with the save edition. (oh, and what's wrong with Two and a Half Men? It beats Real World, in my opinion).

I think that there are casual anime fans; one of my co-workers likes Naruto, and DBZ, but not much else. Granted, they may not spend all of their paychecks on anime, or be the screaming fanboy/fangirl, but they like anime. What's wrong with that?

Its funny how people perceive things differently. I read the statement as a joke and not an attempt to demonize those who subscribe to the magazine. And out of all this person had to say, you had a gripe with that? Really? I do all of the above except being a police dispatcher and I was not offended at all.
