If you read the article and ignore the name-dropping, the gist of it is almost identical to the live-action Evangelion situation: a domestic anime/manga distributor decides it wants to make a live-action movie and gets the interest of a company in some way associated with the film industry but they must still sell the idea to one of the major studios to get actual funding to make the film.

In other words, the article is about Tokyopop and Hartbreak Films, Melissa Joan Hart's private production company, wanting to pitch an idea to a studio, to which I reply "Yip-Yip-Yahoo" in the same sarcastic way that Rush Limbaugh says it.

Only a small fraction of "pitches" ever get the "greenlight", and Real Bout High School is a property that is hardly a household word outside the manga niche, so the studios aren't going to greenlight this on name recognition alone. And even if a studio did get interested, it's no guarantee that it will ever be made.

The fact that the best information I could find on Hartbreak Films using Google was this Geocities Page does not exactly fill me with great confidence that this project will ever get beyond the pitch stage.

So's Evangelion. I'm not defending the Real Bout movie but some of the animes that are being remade and have already been picked up by studios are also hardly known outside the anime/manga niche. Evangelion is one of them. I think it flopped when it was on Toonami. But they're still making it, and it's supposed to be a big budget flick.

Real Bout High School has at least as good if not better chance of coming to fruition than EVA.
(1) It can basically be pitched as a Buffy clone to all the studios, and most studios prefer tried and true formulae to experimental stuff like EVA
(2) One thing that is not said is what type of movie this would be; a Hollywood movie or a TV movie. Considering that MJH is well known but not exactly an A-list star, a TV movie might be more likely. But even if it is an actual big budget movie, the pricetag is going to be less than EVA; the special effects need to be nowhere near as sophisticated.

Not quite, which is exactly why I made the comparison: despite the press release hype from ADV, the truth about the live-action Evangelion is that it still hasn't been greenlight-ed by an actual studio and it's stuck in preproduction limbo where they have impressive concept art and a few clips of people from WETA, which is only a special effects house, talking excitedly about it, but they can't really procede forward until some studio backs them.

In fact, of the two, I think Real Bout High School is the more likely one to be greenlight-ed, since it would be much cheaper to shoot, but I wouldn't place bets on either one ever making it out of preproduction at this point.

Look, if you don't have anything to say, don't say it.

This isn't Slashdot, and we don't take kindly to "First Post" style posts.. and this is very close to one of them.

hehe

Myself the anime was mediocre and the manga was fun, i rather liked the development, but the ending was a bit odd, s'ok. The characters were good.

Say, this is a really odd concept, i'd have to see it to know for sure. Sure sounds dumb and weird, but meh <.< ryoko! woo! hehe

If Tokyopop were to be replaced with 'entertainment companies in general', this statement would carry some truth Wink

As if they haven't done already.

Initial D never got onto TV, Reign only managed a few nominal showings on CN, GTO is still on Showtime, and Rave Master got Edited 4Kids Style for CN.

I think they (commented edited for content).

I love the anime series of Samurai Girl - I haven't read the manga yet - so I can't wait seeing the movie, either it will be good or not. Melissa Joan Hart as Ryoko, you said? Hmmmmm, that's doesn't sound good. Mad Mama mia...
