-Madoka Magicka is only liked by people who still haven't seen their Elfen Lied yet, or gotten over that phase yet. Not to mention it has awfully inconsistent animation style. Yet people will try to explain that off as art, just like they did with EVA's TV-ending (it is bs, and you know it.)

-Trigun is the #1 anime that somehow managed to gain undeserved fame in the west. It can only be watched if you've seen less than 10 anime.

-The last even remotely great anime was made four years ago, in the year 2008. Even that was just one sub-genre definer with limited appeal. The real last year of anime was 2007. Everything after that has been mediocre to good at best.

I know that's true, from when Evangelion was aired on prime time TV in Sydney in the late 90s. It turned many people on to anime as their first, eye-opening experience.

That's funny, cause I've seen both and hate the shit out of Elfen Lied.

Some of my unpopular opinions, btw...

- Evangelion is without a doubt THE most overrated, overhyped pile of pretentious garbage ever produced.

- Aya Hirano was better as Pachira and Misa Amane than she is as Haruhi and Konata.

- The tsundere archetype is a dangerous one.

- 95% of all anime since 2005 or so has been total shit.

^ Take out the "since 2005" and you'd still be correct, just less of the crap made its way over here before the advent of most people having Internet access and DVDs, so we didn't know the crap existed.

Another one of mine:

- Looking back, I honestly have to say Sailor Moon wasn't all that great, and anyone who thinks it was just has their nostalgia goggles on a little too tight. Of course, this is true for a number of 90's anime, I've noticed.

- Hellsing (the manga, I haven't seen either anime yet) doesn't have a plot, it's torture porn. It's really good torture porn with awesome characters, but torture porn nonetheless.
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica is overrated. It's good, but it's not as good as a lot of people make it out to be.
- Spoiling someone can completely ruin a series for someone and it's a really mean thing to do. But if you go into a specific show's discussion forum, then it's your own fault. Don't expect people to spoil tag every single thing in a discussion thread that will obviously have spoilers.

Liking it or not is unrelated to what I was getting at. It has to do with a specific style of anime, that comes out every now and then. I call it pretentious wank myself. The enjoyment that a non-teenager can deliver from it is threading on a thin line between amusing and just plain annoying. Hint: the amusement wears out fast.

The difference being that, because of creative sense or maybe just dumb luck, there was something great produced every once in a while. Not any more.

Summer Wars is crap, it's a well animated movie, that simply smashes together a bunch of scenes from other anime (in particular Our War Games) with a hypocritical attack on America (you can't claim that America's military has problem then turn around and compliment Japan's military history). The ending where people all over the world unite to help has no meaning when the movie spends the last hour insulting America's culture (through the adopted son who lived in Pittsburgh).

Er...huh? Confused
I don't recall any gratuitous America-bashing (at least not on a burning passive-aggressive Tenchi level), any more than just simple trope-guessing from afar. (Eg. Kaleido Star guessing that Miami is full of big overly-friendly teddy-bear cops.)
Summer Wars was a parody on the net's growing corporate reliance on Facebook as the integrated be-all hub and purpose of the Internet--probably my own interpretation, seeing as I don't use it, and have been around long enough to make 90's AOL jokes about the poor naive/illiterate/lonely saps who brag about being on Twitter--which I'm guessing is a LOT more prevalent in Japan. Mostly on the cellphones, I'm guessing.

And while I won't join in on the gratuitous Cowboy Bebop bashing (if you're wondering why everyone says you're "supposed" to watch it, see above), I'll admit it's a bit of a showy posturing drama-queen:
It's trying SO hard to be atmospherically Noir and cynical, you just can't help being attracted to Faye or Ed, who don't care about "fate" or "old demons", they're just trying to get what they want. Smile
(When someone once asked me about Outlaw Star, I recommended it as "Like Bebop, only not as Gratuitously Depressing". Wink )

The people responsible for the Virus is spoiler[the American military who released it on the web without safeguards to see what would happen]. Its also shown that Wabisuke used to be a sweet kid but grew distant after moving to America.

And thus it finally occurred very suddenly to many that no, Japan is generally not too fond of America.

The point is made clear that Wabisuke was corrupted by living in Pittsburgh.

I guess someone took the little jab at America a bit too personal. Most countries don't like the US. Just watch some British shows sometime.

Hmm, I'd say nanimanino and TheSwedishElf's contributions make this the "batshit dopey" opinions thread. Nothing is sadder than pretentious twits who think they know anything about anime. I gotta ask why people like this even continue to watch anime or post in anime forums when nothing ever satisfies their oh-so-sophisto taste? Oh well, no point in trying to discern rationality in idiocy. Rolling Eyes

That's not an opinion. That's just a very childish insult. Fame deserved or not, NGE is a great series that inspired numerous others.
