"Sentai, you need to slow down with these licensing binges. A lot of these shows have to be bad ideas. Don't you think you've had enough?"

The guns in old WB cartoons aren't very realistic like those in Upotte!!

Someone doesn't remember Mike Judge being in hot water because some kid burned their house after imitating Beavis and Butthead playing w/ matches.
config: That's an individual parent's choice to take his/her kid to a shooting range. It's not the same as leaving guns lying around the house, though. Or at least making it easy for them to break open a gun lock. Yeah, Upotte!! shouldn't be blamed for earning those Darwinian gold medals, but it would be, so...

Almost none of their stuff is big or popular lately.

Holy crap, Hakuoki? I recently finished playing the game Aksys brought over (loved it), and was thinking how nice it would be if the anime was licensed so I could watch it...so glad it actually happened!

Well, going from this...
The article wrote: | Sentai Filmworks told ANN that it will release "all of Hakuōki that is out right now." The Hakuōki anime franchise includes the 12-episode Hakuōki series, the 10-episode sequel series Hakuōki Hekketsu-roku, and the 6-episode Hakuōki Sekkaroku OVA series (the sixth episode will ship this June). The franchise also includes an upcoming prequel television anime series that will premiere this summer and two upcoming films that will premiere in 2013. |
...I'd say that this includes the OAVs but not the upcoming 3rd season & films, as those aren't "out right now." Though I can't imagine they would license all that Hakuouki and then not go back and pick up the rest; they probably just can't license something that's not been made yet.
Anyway, can I assume you did watch the anime? Did it pick up after the first few eps, or is it "what you see is what you get" from beginning to end? |
(Hope you don't mind someone other than the person you asked answering this)
For me, Hakuouki gave me substantially the same thing from start to finish - a bishonen fantasy story about the Shinsengumi with absolutely GORGEOUS art (all of the Shinsengumi men are beautiful to look at). The story moves slowly, but has some very good dramatic moments and I was moved to tears by a number of episodes, particularly in season 2.
So yes, the story does pick up, though it never reaches jet speed or anything. I felt both seasons were well worth watching, though.

No, I'm glad to hear anyone's take on the show, especially if I'm going to be considering buying it now.

I think what made me pause indefinitely on it was that it was from the POV of the heroine, who of course is you when you're playing the game (understandably more engaging) but in the anime is the default teenage anime girl (zzzzzzzzz). I guess my issue is with its game origin-- any relationship progression must be kept relatively generic so as not to p*ss off the fans who shipped another pairing. This is never good for a romance series, or at least one that takes potential romance as one of its main appeals. Did you have the same issues or am I just being picky, picky, picky? Or does the anime work around this entirely? Like I said, I didn't make it past the first few eps so I have no idea where it goes after that.
