So i was browsing this blog made by an otome gamer, and came across this post where she rants and complains about the content in R-18 Otome games.

First, for those who don't know what an Otome game.
It's basically a Visual novel targeted at the female audience, where you date different guys and go through different routes and endings.

Read the post before going any further:
http://breadmasterlee.com/2012/05/07/tldr-r-18-otome-games-for-women

I actually found that post hilarious and immature, it seems she's underage or something, People need to be 18+ to play R-18 games.

So here's what she complains about and here's my opinions.

Heroine Getting raped
First of all, i think rape is a common theme in any R-18 material, But since this is an Otome game, where you have lots of choices and lots of routes, blame no one but yourself for picking the wrong one. not to mention there is a fairly big audience for this who have rape fantasies.

Heroine getting abused & humiliated
Again, the game has different routes and options. and again, there's obviously an audience who likes this kind of stuff.

Heroine getting sexed up by things other than the guy’s ding dong
Someone apparently never heard of foreplay or oral.

Heroine getting drugged & turning into a sex doll
I said it before and i'm gonna say it again, the game gives you alot of routes and options, you picked this one, deal with it. there's the target audience for this.

Heroine’s voice being louder & prouder than the guy whose route I’m on
Excuse me, but do you want the guy to scream or cry while he's sexing you?

Sticking it in the pooper
Now this one is really silly, i actually sat there and laughed for hours at her prudeness. Anal sex is something you see everywhere and i don't see the problem with it, if you don't like it you could just skip it or something.

Heroine constantly saying no no stop even when it’s clear both parties are mutually accepting of screwing each other
That's just a porno thing (It exists in real life too), you're playing a porno game, and i don't see how this is a problem at all.

Heroine being treated like a whore if god forbid she actually enjoy sex
I have mixed feelings about this one.
guys and male characters are always called perverts and stuff when they barely fantasize, so i guess it's some kind of equality thing going on here? i dunno.

The amount of happy endings being overshadowed by the amount of bad endings
You either barely played any otome games, or you forgot the fact that you are playing an otome game, since they're usually filled with drama.

Eroscene where all the clothes are on
Lol...I'm not even gonna talk on this one.

Well there you have it guys, don't get me wrong, she is spot on some points, but the fact that she's complaining about something that is obviously not targeted at her is just plain annoying, it's a R-18 game, you should expect stuff beforehand.

Anyways, girls (or guys), what do you think? Write your opinion below.
Do you think she's right or wrong? what do you think she's right about and what do you think she's wrong about? Let the discussion begin!

Dude, this is like the third forum I've seen this post in. I'm going to assume it's the same person but, regardless of opinions and whatnot, you seriously need to find something else to do.

Well, that aside, I don't even see what the big deal is. It's her opinion, just like what you think is your opinion. Besides, I think you've got a few of her arguments wrong.

From what I can tell, her complaint isn't so much that that stuff exists, it's the fact that she's trying to find an R-18 game that has a nice story and isn't just about rape and stuff. I remember my friend actually had the same complaint and if you look at Japan in general, it's pretty misogynistic, so I can't say I'm surprised it's like that.

Besides, eroges aren't a good counter-example here. There's too damn many. For every game that's filled to the brim with nothing but fetish bait, there are games that are focused on pure love (Key's games), story and action (Type-Moon), drama (Midori), or some others that mix everything (have I mentioned Akatsuki Works is awesome? Themes that explore the value of betrayal, friendship, rivalry along with kickass music and action and *gets off topic*).

Actually, I've done a speed run with my girl friend of an R-18 otome game (and only one) and I really didn't like it. I kinda agree with everything she says (ONLY ONE GAME THOUGH. I might be wrong and maybe there's a game that proves both of us wrong or something). It's like, for an eroge I know what path I'm on, what kind of game (pure love, kinks, whatever) I'm getting, and if I'm heading for a good end or bad end. But this game had like, ALL the bad stuff on route to the good end and then we were both kinda annoyed at that so we went back to try the other routes and what the hell. It's got this cutesy school setting and beginning and characters but everything's so out of (normal) order.

If it were an eroge, I would have quit. I don't expect the rape and humiliation and what not on the good route (unless I'm doing an Alice Soft or Akatsuki game or something, fine, but I KNOW that going into those games cause those companies are just like that). It's like...throwing some random bad end scene from Comyu (akatsuki game <333) into Shuffle! or something. It's just so out of place.

Yeah, I agree that sort of stuff is in R-18 games all the time, so I don't think complaining's all that good, but then again, why the hell would guys know what a girl thinks? I have a hard enough time figuring out if a girl is complementing and insulting someone when she opens her mouth, I don't think I'm going to try and figure out their taste in porn or something thank you very much.

Hell i wouldn't know the fine details about Otome games (not being the target audience) but in general i think people get too worked up about this sort of thing.

In my opinion, if it fits the story and is done tastefully or rather makes sense in the context, an author is free to do what he pleases with the game. I'm sure that in some cases what she is saying is correct but i really don't think a MAJORITY of these games would be like that. Or maybe they are, who knows.

TBH, if a game i was playing ended up completely insane like the stuff she mentioned for absolutely no reason other than sex appeal or whatever, with no ties to the story or being completely out of characters, i'd be annoyed too and probably stop playing.

But i guess it's how you use it?

I think you're really fanning the flames of potential angry, ranting replies with this one. There are more than a handful of active posters here who absolutely decry at any implied justification of rape. The fact that it's a game, or the fact that it's from Japan, or it's fictional characters, or you choose your own path, are not excuses to take the context of rape lightly. You'll never convince a rape victim anything that even remotely depicts rape can be considered a form of entertainment. They are just physically and mentally incapable of processing that thought, and don't even think for a second the problem lies with them. So I don't know how you want to approach this at a different angle. I'm sorry rape is a touchy subject, I prefer to avoid it altogether.

I'll bite!

I play otome games, and have always seen them as choose you own fate romance novels. Particularly in most cases, bodice rippers. Rape is found in those romance novels your mums read. Why can't the choose your own adventure ones have it too?

Don't see why the girl was surprised. What I'm more curious in is where'd she find one in English. The market here in the 18 games is usually for the boys.

There's a fansubbing contingent to visual novels for the slightly tech savvy and adventurous. But it's 100% legal because you still have to purchase the game. The "fansub" is simply a script you run with the game that replaces the Japanese text with English text. I think the mature visual novel market for English speakers is slowly opening up to games for women (not necessarily exclusively played by women).
