In America, the promise of sex sells. Actual sex is strictly "behind closed doors" stuff. Violence is a completely different issue and is usually PG-13 stuff. Unless it's gorn, which gets an R.

Sex in anime? Skipping past the straight answers, there's more than you'd imagine but less than what you think. For most romances, it's either a first thing in relationships like Ai Yori Aoshi and Rec or last thing like Future Diary or Clannad {unless the girl in Clannad went through meiosis; It wouldn't surprise me. But sex was a given when Tomoya started cohabilitating in the first season. Second season, that's what I said. Not when they were living with her parents. No, that would be wrong. I mean wierd. And then there's Kanon. "You're so warm..." "Hey, wait for me to get my clothes on." and ... end scene; Then there's Ayu sneaking into Yuichi's room late at night and Mai's nightly nights at the school. It's all strictly platonic. If you want to imagine it that way, of course.}

In most animes, it's a nontopic. Not because of the audience, but because not having sex has more dramatic/comedic meaning and use. It's dumb when people complain harem comedies are strictly nonsexual because the ones that are, are of course pornographic.

Wait, what was the topic again?

Boku No Pico has sex scenes...Wait. Wrong answer.

If I recall correctly,Samurai Shamploo has implicit sex, not particularly romantic. Mugen and Jin go to a brothel once (or maybe twice, can't remember for sure). Jin has no other choice but to get laid with a very fat woman, and later on he has a backache. Now, that made me laugh.

Btw, the visual novel of Clannad explicitly says spoiler[Nagisa and Tomoya had sex]. It's just a simple line (and it was like "That night we did it for the first time"), but it's also very important since that was the moment when Ushio was conceived.

Didn't see any other (non-hentai) animes, besides the ones already mentioned.

Jin also gets it on a woman forced into a brothel thanks to her husband drinking himself into debt and the woman having to cover the expenses with her body.

Forgot Samurai Champloo has some moments.

I challenge you to quantify that statement. Most American shows there is always sex? Sounds like a huge exxageration. Do you watch most shows, and keep tabs on this? Or perhaps you choose to watch shows that focus on that aspect which skews your opinion?

So what's the deal with Japan and sex?
In most American TV show, even PG ones there is always sex. I could give a pretty long list of them, but I can maybe think of three anime where there is sex and it is relevant to the plot or story. Short of hentais that is. Even animes based on erotic visual novels don't have sex in them.

Actually, you should be asking the opposite

Sex is a much bigger "thing" with American teenagers than teenagers in other countries.

So yeah, it's just a cultural thing in the ways sex is presented. Or at least, the whole 'casual/teenagers being dumb' type of sex. That's usually how it's glorified in stuff like Jersey Shore and the MTV crowd. So you probably won't find Jersey Shore: The Anime/Drunken College Frat Party very often due to different cultures, similar to how you wont find a huge focus on drugs and stuff like you can in American media.

The few anime that pop up in my mind that had sex are:

Aoi Bungaku (No Longer Human arc/2nd half of the Kokoro arc) - The No Longer Human showed a sex scene but it wasn't very graphic. It's right there and you just know they had sex. The 2nd half of the Kokoro arc just showed the two characters in bed IIRC.
Bokurano - I can't recall exactly but spoiler[the girl was nude in bed with the teacher.]
Mirai Nikki - Do I need to link this?
Rumbling Hearts - All I can recall is the removal of clothes and the lights being closed. It may have been like the Clannad scene.
School Days - I don't think I have to say anything.
Yosuha no Sora - It's borderline hentai.
Please Teacher! - I only caught a few seconds of it when my friend was watching it - it happened near the end of the anime, I believe.
Kara no Kyoukai - If rape counts, then one of the movies has it.
F/SN and UBW - Shirou the Jackhammer. He gets tospoiler[ insert 'mana' into Saber in Stay Night. Tohsaka gets the goods in UBW.]
Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru - I skipped through this so I don't really have a good recollection of it. I think it was heavily implied and not necessarily shown.
Welcome to the NHK - spoiler[Heavily implied that Satou had sex with his senpai before she graduated.]

And... I just found out most of my list has already been posted. That's what I get for not reading the first page but browsing through this thread.

spoiler[They did do 'it'. Said girl was later revealed to be pregnant thanks to their actions.]

Oh wow! You got me laughing quite a bit at this despite my lack of interest in the show! Laughing

There is a scene a couple minutes long of spoiler[Takayuki and Haruka in the middle of things in the second episode before Haruka's family arrived home and they had to stop.] Otherwise, later scenes were either implied or shown some moments of foreplay in a montage.

Interesting, but not very surprising. The U.S. having more than 11x the rate of teen pregnancies that Japan does sounds about right.

As far as Strawberry Panic! I seem to recall the equestrian (prince-type gal) ending up naked with another gal and the main lead ending up with the Etoile also in a similar situation at the end. Its been a long time since I've seen both of these so my old brain might be turning soft and I might not be remembering it right but I'm sure someone will pop in and correct me, if my memory circuits have gotten crossed.

A flashback strongly implied that Shizuma had sex at least once with her former love Kaori. Kaname and Momomi are shown having an active sexual relationship (although they don't actually show the sex scene, their actions and words are much more than platonic), and Yaya makes a forceful but uncompleted sexual advance on Hikari at one point. (This goes a lot farther, and is more accepted by Hikari, in the original novel.) I don't remember the last couple of episodes as clearly so I can't comment on the other cases mentioned above.

Also concerning Ai Yori Aoshi: There is a scene in the next-to-last episode of the first series which suggests that Kaoru and Aoi might have had sex, but the only sexual incident earlier than that was a scene in one of the first two episodes which strongly implied that Aoi's actions while asleep might have caused Kaoru to "have an accident."

Amongst other titles not yet mentioned:

*Golgo 13 clearly had some sex involved in various episodes, though they show very little of it.
*The movie Wicked City showed multiple sex scenes.
*So did Ninja Scroll.
*Futari Ecchi/Step Up Love Story is still an ecchi title but is pretty much all about sex.
*The ecchi OVA Koe de Oshigoto! prominently features simulated/imagined sex, including showing the lead character getting so in-character with her voice acting that she actually achieves an orgasm.
*Witchblade very strongly implied late in the series that Masane and her boss wound up having sex.
*Paranoia Agent has a scene (in episode 3, I think?) where the prostitute side of the split personality girl has sex with an otaku while "on the job."
*In Elfen Lied, one scene clearly indicated that Mayu's stepfather was molesting her.
*IIRC, there's some strongly suggested sex as background scenes in Speed Grapher.
*The two leads have sex in Armitage III: Poly-Matrix and the manager of the dead country singer was strongly implied to have been screwing her.

There's another ecchi OVA whose name escapes me at the moment (I'll look it up when I get home from work) which more or less shows the two main characters engaged in erotic lesbian activities and later shows some incest, too.

I'm positive that I'm forgetting several other examples that I have on DVD, so I may add to this list later tonight.

In Eureka Seven it is pretty clear that Holland and Talho are having sex as well as a heavily implied scene with Moondoggie and Gidget in the cave.

There is quite a bit in Blue Gender as well.

One such show is Kuttsukiboshi, but anime being anime, I can hardly ensure that's the one you're thinking of.

Though if we're including foreplay and/or cigarette-smoking scenes, you have shows like Gundam Seed, Full Metal Panic: TSR, Guilty Crown, which do the "sex is a horrible fate" thing I hate. Majikoi, too, I guess.

The statistic may be unrepresentative considering their attitude towards privacy and widely available and accepted abortion.

Shoot, it doesn't even need to be actual intercourse, or even between two people! All of us fans do remember our favorite scene from Code Geass, yes? Nothing was shown there, either.

Yes, that "poor table"...

That would be Sei and you're correct.

Of note with Berserk: it's pretty old and still had spoiler[one of the most memorable rape scenes, among several other sex scenes].

Do you want specific examples or something? Just go watch some shows on USA or Nick at Night. There are countless points where you see the characters naked in bed together, and most of those shows are PG. If you go into the shows targeted at older audiences like Game of Thrones you can't even count the number of sex scenes on two hands in one episode.

I'll be honest I was not even thinking of reality TV when I though of this, but that's a good point. I don't ever watch MTV or reality TV out of principle, but there is sex is all other form of american media. I can't say anything about news in Japan, but there are stories about sex every day in the american news channels.
