Well, as Ryan pointed out, most non-otaku aren't going to drop hundreds of dollars on anime, regardless of whether they like it. Being popular among teens might also be a reason if that's the case.

Debating whether it might've done better for them at a lower price point is a dead end argument though. There's no way to evaluate it.
