I'm not defining mature shows I'm just defining shows that are about adults. |

Surprised no one has mentioned one of my favorite series, Welcome to the NHK. The story is about an adult hikikomori who falls in love with a young woman who claims to be able to cure him. He befriends an otaku next door and tries to make something out of his life by becoming a game writer.
The main character is in his 20s, and the plot / themes are pretty grown up: for example, there is an episode about MLMs. |

I realize that. I think I used "mature" because "adult" always has pornographic connotations. I was just now thinking about another excluded show, Blood+. Saya being a high-school girl is pretty incidental and more of a plot device than anything else. Her sister is an opera singer, after all. Most all the heavy lifting in Blood+ is carried out by adults; Saya is an instrumentality more than a protagonist. My comment was more of an observation about what shows this method leaves out and not really a criticism of the method itself. "About adults" is a more sharply defined category than "mature" and less likely to cause disputes. I had no trouble identifying eligible shows like Kurozuka and Oh! Edo Rocket.
Wow, I can't believe I missed that one. I reread the rules about color codings and changed my post above. I've added asterisks to shows like Rocket with a pre-college-aged character. Last edited by yuna49 on Fri Jul 20, 2012 9:26 am; edited 1 time in total |

Regarding NHK. Is the only underage character in that the girl that's trying to "fix" him? Or is she college age? (I haven't seen it).

She's around 17 - 18. Yeah, she's pretty much the youngest of the main cast. Everyone else is in their 20s. |

Let's see:
-Gungrave- Major cast is predominantly adults focused on Harry and Brandon's involvements with the Millenion crime syndicate. -Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie- All the characters featured from the video game used in this movie are adults. -Kemonozume- Mature anime with a cast of adults featuring the complicated relationship with a young man from a clan of monster slayers and his relationship with a woman who turns into a monster when aroused sexually. -Redline- Gritty, over-the-top and violent races involving aliens and humans. -Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning- Kyosuke, Madoka and Hikaru are now adults in this later KOR adaptation. |

I actually did, like 3rd or 4th post but never got added. That one and Steins;Gate should be on there, but I think someone thought Steins;Gate was about high schoolers, but I disagree with that. The main characters are college or older age. |

5pb has character profiles for Steins Gate on its web page, but, of course, in Japanese. Wikipedia lists the following ages:
Okarin: 18 Makise: 18 Mayushi: 16 Daru: 19 Moeka: 20 Ruka: 17 Feyris: 17 Suzuha: 18 Okarin and Daru are college freshmen, Mayushi and Ruka are 2nd-year (of 3) students at a prep school. |

Another borderline case is [C]. The main character is a nineteen year-old college student who has a same-aged female friend. The rest of the human cast are adults. The "assets" are presumably ageless, even though they look like lolis.
Another omission is Genji Monogatari Senneki, the adaptation of the Tale of Genji, that ran on noitaminA in 2009. I suppose the presence of young Murasaki, and the sequences with Genji and Fujitsubo as children after she weds Genji's father, might require asterisks, so I've put them in the entry below. However I don't think they are really necessary since the anime largely focuses on the story between Genji and Fujitsubo as adults. **Genji Monogatari Sennenki - Retelling of the famous Japanese novel Tale of Genji Also: Gun Frontier - Famous anime characters Harlock and Tochiro are transported to the Wild West Last edited by yuna49 on Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:20 am; edited 3 times in total |

I would like to mention Zone of Enders:Dolores. It stars a washed up middle aged space trucker trying to reconnect with his estranged adult children when he suddenly finds himself in possession of an experimental top secret mecha and framed for murder and terrorism and discovers that his long dead wife may not really be dead but somewhere on Mars. He now has to gather his children, try and mend their relationship, figure out this mecha, avoid getting arrested by Earth police and military, find his way to Mars while avoiding the people who framed him and the Martian military and then look for his wife and see if he can rebuild his family and stay alive. His only tools are an experimental mecha that behaves like a love struck teenaged girl, a book on family relationships by a best selling author, his spacetruck and his life experience as a space trucker. It's a really funny show.

Well there you go, most are adults I was taking this thread as characters who aren't in high school personally. |

The list has been updated with all of the suggestions. I'd like to seperate the OVAS into their own little section. But I have no idea what ones are ovas. Does anyone know?
Also I remembered the anime Shinesman. Which is basically power rangers if they were in their 20s and thirties. I wonder if there was a manga based on that. I bet it would be an interesting read. |

I recognized perhaps 80% of the titles in the TV section. The only OVA I saw was Read or Die (which also has a television series). |
